also breaks it down, TOBI for my pseudomonas (if you culture pseudo, this might be a good drug for you, it is a nebulized form of tobramycin, I rotate 28 days on and 28 days off..it does a fairly good job at keeping my pseudo at bay) as well as pulmicort and Xopenex. Lots of nebs....I used to use mucomyst nebs but I found them to be too irritating and caused my airways to spasm even though I used Xopenex with the nebs.
About your initial post...
I was able to quit using Advair and only use my rescue inhaler from time to time. (When someone decides to wear certain perfumes or colognes). I am taking grape seed extract which contains OPCs which are very good for controlling asthma.

What are you on as far as nebs and inhalers? Sometimes it takes different combinations to get relief. I know it did with me..
As far as you phlegm, you said it was colored. Did the docs ever get a good sample to determine what bacteria are present? Sometimes docs do what is called a bronchoscopy to get good samples and to get a good look at the lungs but this is usually something that is reserved for last. If there is alot of mucous, then it could easily be chronic bronchitis.
I am on Nexium 40mg a day, sometimes twice a day if I am on IV antibiotics (they always make my reflux very bad) along with inhalers and nebs (Flovent 220 mcg two puffs twice a day, Xopenex 1.25 mg neb every 6-8 hrs as needed, Singulair 10mg every day...
It is also possible to just have one or the other condition.
I sure hope that they find the right combination of meds for you. The thing with asthma is that symptoms can come on you pretty suddenly, they did with me especially in my 20's.
Hi, fast heart rate is due to Xopenex. Initially, use of this drug is associated with this side effect but over a period of time, tolerance usually develops. In case if you have a pre exisiting heart disease, please avoid this drug.
Consult you treating doctor to lower the dose or frequency, other alternative is sustained release deriphylline tablets.
Either way though, with your reactions after exercise, it sounds like a fast acting broncho dilater (some form of albuterol - Proventil, Porair, Maxair, Xopenex, Ventolin) might be a good idea. These medications can be used as a pretreatment for exercise eliminating the reaction and allowing for a better workout.

I have been on CF treatment for about 5 years now and require IV antibiotics to help with the flares that I get with success. I too take nebulizers, Xopenex like your son but also nebs that help break up my mucous called mucolytics. Pulmozyme and hypertonic saline both do a wonderful job thinning out my secretions so that they don't sit there in my lungs.
She is not responsind to the steriods - still has pain. Her peakflow is only reading 200 - in the hosp. they did a peak flow and nebs and it went to 215. Her oxygen level is good. What should I do?? I am so worried! Thank you!!!
He said that he must have gotten some sort of virus and it triggered his asthma. He told me to continue his Singulair, Pulmicort Respules one time a day, Xopenex in the nebulizer every four hours, and he prescribed Prednisone two times per day (dr. said to start the steroid only if the cough does not slow down).
So on Wednesday morning, my son woke up at 6:30am coughing non-stop....coughing so much that he vomited!
The doctors have put my 4 year old on xopenex and pulmicort via nebulizer. they said that is the best one for him, he has a complicated history. You really need to seek a 2nd opinion, and that is just my opinion. from everything that my little guy has been through I always maek sure that I also have a copy of his medical reports that way there if you go for a second opinion, then you have all of that stuff and you can be prepared. to ask questions or whatever.

You can check with your dr but what we did at that age was buy a really cute face mask in the shape of an animal and I did the nebs while my daughter was asleep. Sorry this is going on for you andyour son -- pls. keep us posted.
Get him propper treatment and all will be well. Do continue his nebs every 3 - 4 hours or whatever his action plan or prescription says.

My son had been diagnosed with pneumonia 4 times in the past four months, as well as bronchiolitis in between. He has been treated with Rocephin, Azithromycin, and Amoxil. He has breathing treatments 4 times a day (pulmicort & xopenex) has had 2 episodes of cyanosis, and been hospitalized for low oxygen satuation, wheezing etc. His pediatrician tells me I shouldn't panic and that he has asthma. He is only 13 mos old!
Thanks. I made an appointment with my PCP and explained the situation. We decided it would be best to discontinue using the CPAP. I was spending more time awake at night attempting to adjust the mask, etc. so that I didn't feel as though I was suffocating and removing it because my ears were popping due to chronic allergy symptoms, etc.

Hi, it is possible to be having asthma issues and maintaim a good peak flow for a while. Peak flow reflects how clear the larger airways are. You could be having issues in the smaller airways. The presence of mucous would indicate that something is probably going on. You should really discus this with your dr at your next visit and see what he/she says.
Another thought would be acid reflux. Could this be an issue for you?
