When is lantus given

Common Questions and Answers about When is lantus given

lantus

Avatar m tn Also, I talked to my MD who is the Medical Director of the Joslin Clinic in my town, and he said that Lantus still works for 24 hrs. even when given IV, though it probably does start sooner than the usual 1 hour, the strength is the same. I have been in the hospital 100's of time w/ Gastroparesis and take everything IV, even my insulins.
Avatar f tn Page 1 of 269 for: I'm taking 32-40 units of lantus a day. My A1C is 6.7. Why would I be given a pill instead of short acting insulin if the lantus has proven to work so well? ive tried numerous pills for diabetes over the past 20 years. Efficacy never enough- so we tried lantus.
Avatar n tn I am not a phycan, but i would highly suggest that you dcusss this change with your endocronolgist as you might have to do this over several days as lantus is a 24 hr insurlin. The other is that lantus really doies not have a peak so it should not effect your luch time injuection.
Avatar n tn Hi, If this low dose of lantus twice daily is working for you without any problems, there is no reason to change it. Lantus is written as once daily but many doctors(including myself) and patients split the dose because even though it is supposed to be "peakless", it is not for some people. At low doses it works especially well as a split dose. Levemir can be used instead, and is more commonly written as twice daily.
Avatar n tn Continuing to give shots in the same location can build up scar tissues and make it more painful. My brother is also Type 1, he also uses Lantus, and he primarily uses his stomach for injection sties because he says it's less painful. There are also several different techniques to giving shots. Is she injecting too quickly? That much insulin being pushed into the skin too quickly can also cause pain.
Avatar n tn I am wondering whether this is some hormone related issue ,or whether I have developed some resistance vs humalog so it doesnt work well (and the lantus is too much). I have given up using any alcohol or doing demanding exercise(jogging) for a while becuase they make the matters worse (though i really enjoy exercising). any suggestions to why this is happening or how i can take care of this would be greatly helpful.
12861759 tn?1432917955 when your 4 hour PP BG is the same as your pre-meal BG then you took the correct amount of novolog for the carbs you eat. WHen your Pre-meal is under 130 and your fasting is under 130 your Lantus is correct.
Avatar f tn I remember my switch to Lantus. They weight gain is normal because it is a long lasting insulin. Just remember that the more insulin you shoot, the more weight you gain. Try cutting back on your carbs and that will cut down on your Lantus and that will cut down on your weight. Remember that human insulin, like Lantus, is not like switching from tylenol to advil. There are more significant signs your body will give you.
Avatar n tn The high levels at night are probably happening because the evening Lantus is not truly lasting 24 hours. See if this makes sense to you... Lantus is marketed as a 24-hour insulin, but it doesn't work full force for exactly 24 hours and then -- poof -- suddenly quit. If you read the paperwork in your Lantus box, you will read that it lasts anywhere between 20-24 hours.
Avatar n tn And it peaks about the time I go to bed. As long as my bs is OK when I go to bed, it is fine for the rest of the night. You may want to experiment with method. It is a bit more work. But the improvement in control makes it really wortyh it.
Avatar n tn If you find that your problem is not due to night lows or to timing of Lantus injections, but is a Dawn Phenomenon evidencing itself, then please tell your doctor what you have read about (do a Google search on "Dawn Phenomenon and print out some articles for him or her). That way you can discuss it with your doctor and maybe help some of his or her other patients as well.
Avatar m tn Is it Lantus? That one is known for stinging, though I don't have the problem with it. Only ideas I have is to try a different site and see if it helps. The belly is actually the best site for absorption, but not sure if it will help the stinging.
Avatar f tn My daughter is 17 and is having trouble with adjusting insulin doses...how much lantus would be a good dose to start with?
Avatar f tn s important to get this under control as you know. We are glad you are working with your doctor on this. Here is information regarding Lantus https://www.webmd.com/drugs/2/drug-20815/lantus-u-100-insulin-subcutaneous/details. With regards to taking your oral medications and Lantus together, please speak to your doctor. For many patients, as long as you are checking your blood sugar levels, this is fine. But your doctor should guide you in this.
Avatar n tn t mention the time of day that she is taking her bath. If it is after dinner (before bedtime), it is likely that her dinner insulin is peaking while she is in the bathtub, bringing her sugar low. You don't say whether the baths happen every night or not. I would be more likely to suspect that the timing of insulin peaking is the problem if it is happening every night. And yes, do make sure her hands are very dry before you test her.
Avatar n tn The hardest thing about having diabetes is that it is impossible to achieve perfection, even when you do everything "right". I do encourage you to go back to your doctor and see if he has any more suggestions for adjusting your insulin. For some of us, the best option has been the pump. But it is not for everyone and you should be able to get good control with insulin. The most important thing is to not despair.
Avatar f tn 40). He is really WEAK, when this occurs should more humalog (as in correction) be given? It's bedtime and I don't want him to drop low.
Avatar n tn They happen late morning, not related to breakfast, novolog dose or exercise. My BG is usually above 150 when it starts, and I must consume 150-200 grams of carbs (as juice or gel) to get it to stabilize, usually in 20-30 mins. I have read on other sites of people having similar unexplained problems with lantus, longtime T1s that describe the feeling as being like a big spurt of insulin from the pancreas but they are long past a possible honeymoon phase.
Avatar n tn I have noticed that no matter what I do the lantus stings after I inject it before I go to bed. Is this common? Is there any tricks anyone has learned that has helped them?
Avatar f tn t know why, but she said that Lantus works better if you give the shots on your tummy and buttox and novolog/humalog (fast acting) works better if given in your legs... anyway, this is a lot of information and if you can, please have him see a Diabetes Educator... al least once! It will help a lot because she will provide you with charts and help you to do the math with knowledge of what you are doing, knowing how your body operates! I hope it helps!
Avatar n tn And as for the sweats about a half hour after taking Lantus, there IS a slight peak action with Lantus, although this peak action for most people is several hours after taking the Lantus. In my case, I usually take my Lantus at about 6 am, and I notice a peak that causes my glucose levels to drop by about 8 am. This happens even if I have not taken any Novolog or eaten breakfast (sometimes I wait until I get to work to take Novolog and eat breakfast), so it has to be the Lantus peaking.
Avatar n tn Common sense told me to stop taking the insulin. Its hard. But I have done much better regulating my glucose eating just meat and lots raw veggies (79-166) than I ever did on the insulin (75-490). I wonder how many other people are told "to seek mental help" when they come to the ER with these symptoms after taking lantus. Maybe thats why there are virtually no reported cases of this....hmmmmm....
Avatar n tn I would guess that your glucose levels are running high at times when not covered by humalog, and that this is the reason for the Lantus increase. Finding the perfect dose really is a balancing act, for I think many of us find that glucose levels do not remain exactly the same day after day.
Avatar n tn The only insulin that I am aware of that cannot be mixed with others is Lantus -- it ALWAYS must be given as a separate shot. But the other insulins can be given by themselves or mixed. It shouldn't change a thing. The reason that they are usually mixed is so the diabetic person only has to have one shot rather than two. Giving them separately should not change the dosage in any way. It is wonderful that your daughter can have this special time with her grandma.
Avatar m tn Diabetes is a disease where the body does not proses carbohydrates properly resulting in high blood sugar (BG). lantus is a background insulin, lasts about 24 hours. lantus just keeps you idling along. When you eat carbs it raises BG as your body digests the food. so you need insulin to lower your BG the same way that food raises BG. When you eat or when your BG is too high you need to take insulin that is faster acting than Lantus.
Avatar n tn this is for 8 hours of sleep.....dont take it with humalog....humalog is only for when you eat and lantus only when you sleep....You guys have got some bad information and I would be afraid if I had your guy's doctors.... take it before you sleep ...just 25 units...
Avatar n tn I am just so tired and frustrated.....the doctor has me on lantus at night....he started me out taking 10 and now I'm up to 44 at night and I'm still waking up with 315...I stayed 315 all day aftr taking 44 last night....the doctors want me to slow walk the lantus into my system...went to ER on Sunday because my fasting Bs was 404 They are confident that my BS is going to drop..I was taking hemalog 50/50 my new doctor feels it was wrong for me...at least i had lows...
