Common Questions and Answers about What is valtrex valacyclovir side effects

valtrex

Avatar f tn My husband and I both have an outbreak every time we have sex which is ruining our sex life. Long term effects of valtrex use is unknown outside of possible renal/liver imparement & I'm just not sure if I should continue taking it. Anyone else have similar experience or advice? Thanks!
Avatar m tn I started suppression famciclovir over the weekend and had diahhrria 5 times the next day. Has this happend to anyoone else? Please share your side effects of any other meds or meds that gave no side effects. I have to call the doc and get something else.
Avatar f tn However, it is well documented that valtrex and acyclovir perform very similarly. Valtrex is actually converted into acyclovir by the liver, so essentially, the two drugs act the same way in the body to suppress the virus. If acyclovir improves your quality of life, I would stick with it and explain the similarities to your partner - they are well documented and I expect you can find information in scholarly journals that supports the suppressive activity of acyclovir.
Avatar n tn My story is I contracted HSV2 on the back of my left thigh in the late 1990's not sure where, but it breakout once a year during summer months one time a year. While it was annoying I didn't take anything during the late 2000's I somehow transferred it to my face (confirmed by swab). I didn't want it there so I started to take Valacyclovir it would keep breaking out every month or so I went on a daily maintenance of 500mg a day.
Avatar n tn Generic valacyclovir is equally effective as the Valtrex brand. If it isn't working, it suggests that the problem isn't herpes. Probably the best approach at this point is to promptly (within a couple of days) get professionally examined to confirm the diagnosis of the current problem. I'm not necessarily doubting that you have genital herpes, just questioning this particular episode. Alternatively, is there any possibility you have newly acquired herpes?
Avatar m tn Hello, Dr's. I have been reading a lot and am a bit perplexed. Last Friday night I had unprotected sex with a female. I awoke Monday morning and noticed 2 red bumps on my upper left thigh (1 larger than the other), 3 small bumps in my pubic region (2 of which looked like zits with white heads), some reddish/flesh colored bumps beginning to arise on the shaft of my penis.
Avatar m tn Acyclovir and valacyclovir (VCV) however are amongst the safest drugs we use, causing few side effects. Thus, if your renal function is normal and you really do have HSV, there is no reason to be concerned about the dose of valacyclovir your doctor has suggested. Resistance to VCV is uncommon but does occur, typically after a person has taken the drug for a long time. Hope these comments are helpful to you. Please make sure this is HSV.
Avatar m tn I need to have my wisdom teeth removed and will be under deep anesthesia. I have HSV and take valacyclovir daily but would prefer not to have that known by the surgeon for personal reasons. I understand it is best to always tell them all medications, but is there any chance of an issue with the meds (or HSV) and surgery? Other than maybe a flare up? I'm mostly concerned about serious interactions/side effects.
Avatar f tn Is there any other treatment for recurrent herpes besides acyclovir and valtrex? I have never taken valtrex but have read that they are the same thing. I feel so bloated, tired and dizzy while on acyclovir. My dr said we could try valtrex...but if it's the same, what's the point? Any other people with similar side effects that found solutions?
Avatar f tn yes and no. Valtrex is an acyclovir prodrug. what that means if you swallow valtrex and your body changes it into acyclovir inside your body. Because of that unique delivery method, you get more active acyclovir available to fight the herpes virus when it's active so you take it less often. The main difference in the two of them is convenience and of course price.
Avatar m tn It seems to me that you are assuming that this is a valacyclovir rash. Has this been verified by your doctor. Are you sure that this is the case? Could anything else be causing this problem? Does it happen every time you take valacyclovir and stay there. If the rash is due to VCV, it should not come and go as long as you are taking the drug? Drug allergies may be either specific to the drug being taken or it may occur within a class of drugs.
Avatar m tn No long term side effects from being on them. If you are going to bother to take antivirals, take the right dose so that it's actually working.
Avatar m tn (How many people know they were exposed to herpes within an hour after sex with a new partner, and also have access to acyclovir or valacyclovir so quickly?) And once infection is established, there is no reason to suppose seroconversion would be delayed, which was one of china's main questions.
Avatar n tn I have read that Valtrex and Valacyclovir can be used for the suppression of herpes , does that hold true for Valcivir also,, isn't Valacyclovir the generic of Valciver ,, if yes what is the usual dosage for the suppression of the virus?
Avatar m tn There are almost no side effects from valacyclovir, it is just a waste of money as well as putting you at miniscule risk for side effects. It may compromise your abiltiy to get a definitive diagnosis. While there are no studies, some of us who see lots of patients with HSV have noted that taking antiviral therapy very early in the course of infection can delay anitbody production, making diagnosis with a blood test difficult.
Avatar n tn What can I do to reduce the risk for transmitt herpes to my wife(I told her the fact before marry)? Can I use the Valtrex(valacyclovir) once a day? Thank you for your help!
Avatar f tn HERPES! The other says: no this is not herpes. Both are qualified gyno´s in their fifties with lot of experience. What else can cause blisters that recur in the same place and that have prodromes?
Avatar f tn a couple of days ago that started me on the once daily valacyclovir--So far, so good. No noticeable side effects to report, and my insurance covers it for for only $20/90 day supply, so I'm thrilled. (Three cheers for generics!) On a different note, I am including a piece from an article (one of the ones I read that made me concerned about being much more contagious in the first two-years. Perhaps it's out-dated or inaccurate? Hopefully?
Avatar f tn t take either drug, what are my options??? Has anyone experienced these side effects with one drug or the other, and do any other alternatives work for you that I can try??? Thank you!
