Furthermore, the treatment rationale for HCM can actually counter the rationale used to treat the same suite of symptoms in a patient who does not have HCM. For instance, many HCM patients have chest pain and shortness of breath—a common symptom of coronary artery disease that is treated with nitroglycerin.

Avatar m tn Esophageal spasms are often difficult to treat, and controlled studies of treatment methods are lacking. The aim of treatment is to relieve symptoms by decreasing pressure in the lower esophageal sphincter. Nitrates (for example, nitroglycerin placed under the tongue before meals) or calcium channel blockers. Arthritis has inflammatory characteristics and very little if anything to do with dilated vessels, etc.
Avatar n tn The goal of treatment is to control chest pain and to prevent heart attack. The pain is relieved by a medicine called nitroglycerin (dilates coronary vessels). You have been prescribed norvasc and that should relieve any chest pains. Norvasc is in a group of drugs called calcium channel blockers. It dilates blood vessels and slows the heart to reduce blood pressure and the pain of angina. Calcium channel blockers may be needed long term. Medications may also include beta-blockers.
Avatar m tn I attempted to explain to you, on another identical post as well, isosorbide is generic for sorbitrate and is taken to PREVENT angina due to ischemia. If you want medication handy in the event you are experiencing angina, nitro is fast acting and within seconds or so there is relief. Doesn't make sense to keep sorbitrate handy as there is not immediate relief.
Avatar n tn Pain in the upper back can be a symptom of heart disease. The possibility is more because this pain is getting relieved by nitroglycerin. I would suggest you to consult your doctor as soon as possible about it and get yourself evaluated. Take care!
Avatar n tn I have a question. Are drugs in the benzo family ever used to treat seizures? As in Xanax, Klonopin, Valium, Ativan, Restoril, etc? I have simple partial seizures and was on xanax on an "as needed" basis to control some nervousness about going back to college. I was on it for about 2 months. I started realizing I got less of my sensory and motor seizures which have always been uncontrollable since I started getting them back in 2000.
Avatar n tn You should see a doctor, preferably a cardiologist, to discuss possible alternatives/substitutes for Nikoran OD. He/she will be able to give you the proper dosing, make sure there are no contraindications with your other co-morbidities, and make sure there are no unwarranted interactions with other drugs you are currently taking.
712042 tn?1254569209 I am nitro dependent 24/7 and have posted here before regarding my diagnosis severe cardiac microvascular dysfunction. I battle this non-obstructive macrovessel angina everyday wearing two 0.6mg patches and supplementing at least every two days with up to two nitro 0.4 mg sprays to pull me out of an episode. This top amount of .20 mg is the same amount of IV nitro used during my arrest in May '08 to 'stabilize' me ( EF was 64). I used to be able to do well in '08 on just 0.
Avatar n tn Hello and welcome to the forum. Very sorry to hear that you have battling this for so long. It has been a week or so since you posted this. How are you doing? Any improvement? The lingering cough can last. It sounds like they are trying to cover all bases for eradicating the pneumonia. Most likely, your lungs are now clearing and the actual infection has passed. Your airways are irritated and this can take some time to recover from especially with your already compromised state.
Avatar n tn If it ONLY has #3 on one side and nothing on the other, white and round, according to drugs.com, it is Nitroglycerin .3mg - however, it would be best to double check with your pharmacist - they'd be able to tell you for sure what it is.
Avatar n tn Thursday my female 10 lb. 2 year old Japanes chin was lethargic and not eating. She was givin Reglan and Pepcid at the clinic. Friday still lethargic not eating and had a fever. Also a questionable gas pattern and a dark area in the stomach on xray. was given fluids, baytril injection, and ampicillan injection. Avatar n tn ed is correct nitro dilates vessels. I take a nitrate (isosorbide) for more than 6 years 3 times before going to gym for workout. My blood pressure does not drop between intervals...in fact I was told to have intervals of nitrate free period. It is true, nitro dilates the coronary vessels and prevents angina (chest pain). The patch should only be worn for up to 12 to 14 hours a day, or as directed by your doctor, but continued use with no interruptions can cause a tolerance for drug....
Avatar m tn My cardiologist thinks the the probability of me having an occluded/blocked coronary artery is very low. My question is, why then am I responding to the nitroglycerin, it being a vasodilator (widens the blood vessels)??? Gastritis and GERD have been ruled out. the doctor thinks it could be anxiety then shouldn't they be giving me a sedative or relaxant as opposed to a vasodilator? I have a pending stress echo test in a couple of weeks and if this test is again normal...
805943 tn?1238093647 Nitro can help some forms of esophageal spasm. Nitroglycerin is used with esophageal spasms (GERD). It is the one non heart related illness that nitroglycerin works in. However, that doesn't rule out a concomitant heart condition. Nitroglycerin is a vasodilator not only for your heart vessels but for the vascular system which then subsquently lowers your blood pressure. It even dilates the vessels in the brain which then usually gives the side effect of the headache also.
Avatar n tn Well, you should NEVER stop medication on your own without notifying your doctor. Do you have a mood disorder or bipolar? That is really important to treat. Talk to your doctor. Seroquel works well instead of Abilify as you know (why did you change?) but there are others in the same class of drugs as well that are good medications. There are several to choose from. Seroquel is one and if it worked before, no reason to change. But that is between you and your doctor.
