I have been prescribed nitrofurantoin (macrobid) for a UTI. I have a hard time swallowing pills. Can these be broken up?

I have a history of UTIs due to a fistula between my colon and bladder. (My weight is about 145 kg, previously has been 188 kg, with a length of 170cm) It started in 2006, I did get nitrofurantoin, but I got only more ill, till I even got over 41 degree fever and an emergency-doctor then prescribed ciprofloxacin which did help (this was in Holland). Since 2008 we are in UK and I have been under treatment at St George, London, till 2010.
I have had swabs and urine samples done and now am waiting on sti results for ghonorrea and chlamydia. My question is though my other symptoms have gone so theres no more pain in erections or whilst peeing. I still have a very small amount of white/clear discharge though and when ejaculating my semen is white and gelatinous. The urine samples and swab came back clear but showing more than normal amounts of white blood cells.
I have recently been feeling unwell and have recurring UTI’s and been on Nitrofurantoin. I also take levothyroxine for an under active thyroid.
I recently had a LFT and my ALT was 934. My GGT was 140 and bilirubin 37.
I am having an urgent scan tomorrow but the drs seem at a loss as to what is causing this? Any advice or help?
This is a tough question. Just very hard to say what could be going on here. I'd say listen to your Dr., try taking the 2nd prescription med for at least a week & see if that helps. This problem requires expert medical opinion, so unless someone has had the exact symptoms & could point out what it was, you may not find a good answer here. For now, trust your Dr's opinion, if that doesn't help, see a specialist (probably a Urologist)...
9 days ago Nitrofurantoin (200g a day for 5 days) was taken and daily birth control (Qlaira). Both are known to decrease levels of haptoglobin but nothing about complete depletion.
Could this be an extended effect from Nitrofurantoin? When should the test be repeated ?
A couple of weeks later I developed a urinary tract infection. Urologist prescribed nitrofurantoin for the infection. Immediatedly after starting the antibiotic my ears gradually starting feeling clogged. Now, two weeks later, they are both very clogged (no wax buildup) and I can barely hear. Logic tells me the ear clogging is somehow connected to the nitrofurantoin. Has anyone ever experienced this or heard of this happening? Will this clogging go away by itself?
Hi I looked this up, it used to be called Macrobid. It is just for bladder infections so that is good.
If your doctor knows about your liver, I think this would be safe. I am not a doctor but I also have compensated cirrhosis and always worry about antibiotics.
I learned that penicillin or penicillin family is the safest.
In your case, it sounds like it is worth it to use it.

I know I'm probably a little late, but I just saw your post. I am a 40 year urology patient. Trust me...there's an underlying cause! Your best bet would be to see a good Urologist. As far as how long you might have to treat this...well, it depends on the cause. Some bladder issues may be quickly resolvable, some are not, but all but the very, very worst can be managed. I too have to take Nitrofurantoin Macrocrystals after intercourse as a prophylactic.
m a nurse, if you tell me what he/she gave you I can tell you if (to my knowledge) if its common and what class of is... also look into cranberry juice or pills.
I have been taking ciprobid, doxyl and nitrofurantoin for a month now. but still the is no change. I still have some pains. I was diagnosed with an UTI, in the urine and blood test the was no Chlamydia, gonorrhea or syphilis in short no STI. But and the doctor, prescribed ciprobid, doxyl and nitrofurantoin for me and my wife. I have visited the doctor 3times and the last tested I did.

The Doctor now has me on Cefixime for 5 days and then to take Nitrofurantoin for 10 days after that (I think he to is treating me for a UTI). I am still having some mild symptoms with being on this medication and knowing how this has gone for the past 6 months I can till that whatever I have is not gone and will return with a vengeance once I am off this medication.
ve also got a case of epididymitis (nuts on fire). Current antibiotic is Nitrofurantoin Macro. Urologist told me to come back in 3 months while my health and quality of life *****!!! What are some other options for treatment? Original culture was Coagulese negative Staph.
He said urinary infections in teh past had caused this and he thougt the antibitios will take care of this. what is your opinion? The surgery was done 4-6-10.
