Common Questions and Answers about What is niaspan used for

niaspan

Avatar m tn I have been taking 1000 mg Niaspan for six years to treat genetically high Lipoprotein(a). Now my physician wants to stop the Niaspan and begin a very small dose of Crestor. His reason is due to a recent study indicating Niaspan as a risk of causing bleeding and/or infection problems. I have already had one bad experience with another statin, Advicor, that resulted in me having permanent lymphedema in my ankles and legs. Now I am unsure about Niaspan.
7052683 tn?1392938795 The high liver enzymes are a sign of the Crestor causing problems for you. So, you may have to get off of it. My husband had low platelet count with it and was only on a 10mg pill. He was also on Niaspan and only gets the flushing. But he had to go down to every other day on Niaspan. So, you may have to do something like that. If you are on a very high dose of Niaspan then less common side effects can be fever, diarrhea, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, headache and rash.
Avatar n tn t remember the strength, but this is what is oredered by my doctor. In addition to that of course I have to take a statin and Tricor. Good news is that Tricor will have a generic out in May. I was also told by my pharmicist that Plavix has a generic coming out in July. Ask your pharmicist if there is a generic of Niaspan due out any time soon. And as Flycaster has stated, with the Niacin there is a flushing feeling also.
Avatar n tn Niaspan is just niacin, one of the B vitamins, and as far as I can tell, is not cancerous in the dose given in Niaspan. As for your other question whether a five year study can demonstrate a drug-cancer connection, it would depend partly on the study design. The strength of the association between cause (the drug) and effect (cancer) would depend on how the evidence is gathered. Experimental studies (e.g.
Avatar m tn I just googled Niaspan, since I didn't know what it is. Look what I found under Important Safety Information! •NIASPAN may cause an increase in blood sugar levels. If you have diabetes or higher than normal blood sugar levels, you should carefully check your blood sugar levels, especially during the first few months of NIASPAN and during any change in your dose. Report any changes in your blood sugar levels to your health care professional.
Avatar m tn Thanks but still have some doubts about Niaspan or Niacin. Your post only confirms what is out there already as to the many bad side affects of Niaspan or Niacin. Jon was very helpful and I appreciate his input a great deal as I do yours, but it' is I who has to decide at the end of the day. My decision (for now anyway) is to do what I did the last time I was on a campaign to bring my total cholesterol down-which was over 200 3 years ago-plus Triglycerides over 700.
Avatar m tn I'm new here and want to find out what people think about the new research on Niaspan. I can't figure out how to filter my search results by date so that I just get recent results.
Avatar n tn My HDL/LDL ratio is good so should I worry about it. HDL alone is a risk factor I know. Blood Pressure is good and Tachycardia is mostly under control. I can exercise and get heart rate to 160, but not much above that which is good. Would it be good to switch to help raise HDL or should I stick with the Beta Blocker?
Avatar n tn I was told that they thought that it was a winter virus. I still have no idea what that actually is but, the outbreaks are AWFUL! During the last nighttime outbreak I was so uncomfortable that I had to take my pj's off. If you get any further info on this please let me know.
Avatar n tn 0, CHOL 188, HDL 65, LDL 106, triglyceride 65 I do not like the trends I am seeing. My new PCP doctor (endocrinologist) is specifically concerned about CRP reading in conjunction w/history of heart disease in my family. He knows I eat healthy but that I have eliminated temporarily (for last 6 months) exercise due to scare associated possible lung cancer diagnosis (mentally I just do not want to work out - yet). He has recommended Niaspan (500).
Avatar n tn you need to build up a tolerance for it slowly. This is the only one that raises HDL. I have insurance, so I take the Niaspan, which is a time release nicotinic acid. The "No Flush" Niacins are a different formula (Inositol Hexanicotinate) and don't have an effect on HDL. Here is an article on it: http://health.yahoo.
Avatar f tn this is known as off labeling...where a drug is intended for one purpose but used for another....in this case insomnia......
Avatar n tn it checks your muscle functions the way they told me
Avatar m tn I take Niaspan which is an extended release form of niacin. Niaspan will decrease your LDL and triglycerides and increase your HDL. I would not change your niacin dose w/o talking to your doctor about it. Decreasing the dosage could decrease your HDL. I was taking 1500 mg of Niaspan at one point for about 7 months My HDL was around 42-44 for 3 measurements. It then drop to 32. My cardiologist immediately bumped my Nispan dosage to 2000 mg and my HDL went to 50 a year later.
Avatar n tn I've been on Zocor for the last 4 1/2 yrs and never had any sleep problems, but everybody is different. Tell your doctor about it and see what he says/thinks should be done.
Avatar n tn Currently I am on Tarka, Niaspan and Coumadin for HTN and atrial fibrillation. On 1/11, Sectral was added to my cardiac med profile to aid in arrythmia control. On 1/26 I started Lovenox prior to a colonoscopy. These are the only two meds changed, with all other meds longstanding. On 12/1 I had a complete metabolic profile drawn for a routine endocrinology follow up and LFTs then were ALT 17 and AST 18.
Avatar f tn Having cirrhosis and asking laymen for medical advice as to what drugs you should take in my opinion is a poor idea. Only a liver specialist can determine what drugs are safe for someone with cirrhosis. Especially now that you have gotten rid of the cause of your liver disease and don't want to add any further damage.
Avatar m tn Forgot to mention, the Niaspan (2000mg higher does) is for for my triglyceride and cholesterol.
Avatar m tn Also to raise the HDL, high dose Niacin. Niaspan is a great drug for that and, unfortunatey, nothing better has made it to market. Then he needs to start walking everyday as much as he can. Lean into the pain, but not too much. He also needs to start eating a lot of green stuff and not so much meat. He also needs to relax and enjoy life and learn to give the entire world the finger and just decide that he is not a person who dies and tell everyone ot buzz off.
