1167245 tn?1353878500 are benzodiazepines typically used to treat agitation? I was thinking of asking my psychiatrist for a short term (a week or two) prescription for a longer lasting benzo to get me though the week when I feel like this. I truly am non-functional with this type of agitation, and for someone who is currently having some serious problems with suicidal preoccupation, it's quite worrisome. Any thoughts of suggestions as to which meds could be helpful in this situation? Thanks!
Avatar n tn when my psychiatrist allowed me to reduce the 20 mg geodon to zero mg but still taking the 4 mg perphenazine, i started getting chills mostly in my torso/spine, but not shaking chills. i was on zero mg geodon/4 mg perphenazine for just one day and started getting chills. and when i took the 20 mg geodon back again with the 4 mg perphenzine i still had chills. now i am taking geodon 20 mg and will start taking zero mg perphenazine.
Avatar m tn Some of the one I am familiar with are Abilify, Geodon, Depakote, Lamictal, Lithium, Remeron, Aoloft, Prozac, and many many more. You may want to post and ask for a website link to get more info. I know one site www. NAMI.org is very good and has links. I think it boils down to good old fashion research. Usually it's a combination of 2 or 3 meds to treat the different symtoms of Bipolar. Most people are not on just one med.
Avatar n tn According to the manufactuer many of the symtoms you are experiencing could be from the Geodon. I suggest you contact your doctor immediately and express your concerns to him/her. There are many alternatives available that do not cause these side effects and remember that everyone is different, so side effects are often different for each person. So another medication may not be as difficult for you and sometimes initial side effects fade after taking the medication for awhile. Good Luck!

Avatar m tn I don't have Bipolar 1 but Geodon helps my depression for sure along with of course my psychosis since it's an atypical antipsychotic. It's FDA approved to treat Bipolar mania and my therapist told me even though it's not FDA approved to treat depression it still has a mood stabilizing effect. It might not be working right for you as medications work differently for everyone.
Avatar m tn I think what happens is that there is a limited number of posts the experts answer. In this forum it is currently two posts per day. When the experts are away (on leave, etc) some experts will block members ability to post questions on their forum(s). Some experts won't and some won't even have a limit. Usually there is a green bar with post question in it (similar to the post comment one but usually found at the top of the page and not the bottom). To post a question click on that.
Avatar n tn Hes putting me on geodon to try and get me off zyprexa and to see if i get better sleep. I am on 30 mg of zyprexa right now and life has been better, cause at one time i was on 40 mg. With all the medications I am on I still don't sleep that well. We both think I'm over medicated. The doctor says that I need to calm down and relax and wait for them to work and then he will start to slowly reduce my amounts and how much medications i am on. the objective right now is to fisrt stablize me.
Avatar m tn I am scared and confused. There is very limited data for how to medicate a child like her so I really have to go along with what they think is best. I am posting to see if there is anyone out there who has advice. **Yes, I am aware that these medications are not meant for a 3 year old BUT in her genetic syndrome they are commonly used.
969163 tn?1281105479 He has recently been put on geodon, I had some experience, bad ones, with geodon, but for him it seems to work. He is notorious for not taking his medication, either at all, on time, or without food. Once in awhile, when he'll take his nighttime geodon, he becomes very groggy and falls asleep in a chair, on the steps, eating dinner, etc. when we try to coax him to go to bed he gets belligerent and nasty.
1255530 tn?1269867619 From my understanding I was diagnosed the worst form of bipolar and rapid cycling which is the hardest to treat .
915369 tn?1355314810 On my last appointment she told me she would be tapering me off of Risperdal and Tegretol so I decided to just not restart taking it, and I was supposed to start taking Geodon because I could afford it now but the Geodon made me so sick so I ended up only taking it for a couple days (so sick I couldn't work or leave the house). So now I'm only taking my lithium, and really only the evening dose (which is half my daily dose anyways).
Avatar f tn I think Geodon is for BP patients who have equal mania and depression or more on the manic side (as opposed to Lamictal which is used for greater depressive BP). Trileptal is very similar to Tegretol - in fact, I think they are the same molecule but varied somewhat. I've read a statement from a Psychiatrist that Tegretol is always more successful for them than Trileptal is. Go to Bipolarworld - the Dr. in charge of that wrote a abstract of his experience using Tegretol vs Trileptal for BP.
Avatar m tn hi...i've since taken my self off of geodon. as a refresher i was taking 120mg and dropped down to 60 mg for a week. i've read lots of exteme withdrawal symptoms but in the 3 days i've been off i'm not experiencing anything. i'm thinking it's going to take about 2 weeks for my brain to adjust without any geodon and another 2 weeks to hopefully see if my sleep returns. would that be a good time frame to expect a change?
Avatar n tn He is having severe memory problems. Is it due to Geodon? He has schizoaffective disorder. He was also put on cogentin and inderal.
Avatar m tn This is going to explain the side effects of Geodon better than I even can and I take it and experienced some of them but mostly only during the adjustment period. Side effects occur differently for each person. http://bipolar-disorder.emedtv.com/geodon/geodon-side-effects.
Avatar m tn There are still other options but right now what seems to be the problem is they are trying to find out more about what they are treating and it would be worthwhile to discuss that concern with them further and note what changes you encounter on a daily basis and over time.
Avatar f tn I would think that if your HPT's are showing positives that means that you have hcg in your system, so what i don't understand is why your beta is that low.. i would think hcg is hcg whether its in the urine or in the blood so it just doesn't seem to make much sense to me!
Avatar f tn All antipsychotics CAN make you gain weight, but some are worse than others. Geodon is supposed to be weight neutral, and Abilify mostly weight neutral (won't make you gain or lose). Saphris has gotten a lot of good reviews in the weight department, and I believe Latuda has as well, but these are both still brand only, which might affect insurance coverage (and will affect cost). Unfortunately, there's no way to know for sure if a med will cause you problems without trying it first.
Avatar n tn I have a question. Are drugs in the benzo family ever used to treat seizures? As in Xanax, Klonopin, Valium, Ativan, Restoril, etc? I have simple partial seizures and was on xanax on an "as needed" basis to control some nervousness about going back to college. I was on it for about 2 months. I started realizing I got less of my sensory and motor seizures which have always been uncontrollable since I started getting them back in 2000.
1610967 tn?1314811101 I am currently taking Lithium, Cymbalta, and Geodon and I was wondering if anyone, that has taken these medications, has experienced their food tasting strange. I have been taking these medications for months now and this is a recent problem. I find that I don't want to eat and when I do it can taste a little off.
Avatar f tn http://www.psycheducation.org/depression/meds/moodstabilizers.htm You might need to consult with a mood disorders specialist or change to a psychopharmocologist to have medications that are FDA approved but in experimental use for bipolar considered but if nothing else has worked it would be worth it.
