475570 tn?1280941363 What do we think about the new colesterol study about the effect of niacin not doing the job?
718651 tn?1237042917 I was thinking today of if taking niacin would make the opiate come out of your system faster... i've heard of people taking higher doses to get drugs out of their system to pass a UA.. has anyone tried this?? or do you think it will work??
1063764 tn?1272821064 I'm not sure I'd agree with the folic acid info. Folic acid and niacin do quite different things in the body, though both are essential for proper nervous system functioning. As for folic acid supplementation, there's probably more research on this than virtually any other vitamin, as it's essential to prevent certain problems in the fetus during pregnancy. Certainly some absorb it better than others, but if you google it I'm sure you'll find a ton of studies.
Avatar m tn There is also niacin (look for non flush niacin) and L-carnitine. And of course look at your diet. You can check out what to eat and avoid on this article from Authority Nutrition: A Paleo Diet Meal Plan and Menu That Can Save Your Life. After a bad diet, hypothyroidism is the second most common cause of elevated cholesterol. Genetics is under 1% of cases. It's worth trying out some natural methods first. Statins have a list of side effects a mile long. *** "...
Tbd What is the purpose of the niacin and should a niacin supplement be administered if the medication does not contain niacin?
Avatar f tn Thanks, I make sure to let my doctor know. Kind of scary what a vitamin can do.
Avatar n tn Last night I tried 500 mg of niacin at 6 pm (out of curiosity about what my daughter was taking). I went to an exercise class and had a remarkable "flush". My daughter who is a very clever bipolar Engineering student had started using the niacin 2 weeks prior as an aid to help her sleep. At the time she had been off pharmaceutical meds for a year and a half. She had been having a lot of anxiety about this term in University (3rd /4th year) and had heard this might help.
Avatar f tn hi wow that's a lot to carry, try a niacin flush (not with time release) do it the old fashion way ,put on cotton and get ready to burn up, don't worry it don't last long ,you will get red too if it to much a cool shower will help, what it does is remove built up toxics in the body I am not a professional but you know one thing its coming from inside of you ,please be loving and kind to yourself you have been thought a lot ...
Avatar n tn I know someone who recovered from a stroke by taking niacin so I was taking that, but not enough to do much good. Does anyone suggest niacin? Does it have to be taken before eating food or with food? Also does anyone have anything to say about Mona vie- a drink with acai berries in it that seems to make me feel better.
Avatar f tn Yes, there is a warning about niacin flush on five hour energy, but it's not dangerous. How are you feeling? Good to see you again.
Avatar f tn The difference I noticed was dramatic but did not really take effect until I reached a higher dose, and the flushing was quite uncomfortable at first, but stopped after about 3-4 days. Feel free to contact me if you have questions and please do tell me what your experience is if you try it.
Avatar m tn niacin vitamin, the type with slow release, also double check online there is a type of niacin which doesn t work i dont remember the name (its the one without red skin effect) liposomal gsh from livonlabs fish oil, epa+dha 2g minimum daily vit d3 5000iu or higher according to your blood levels
Avatar n tn Is a EBCT the scan what you are taking about and does it show all plaque or only calcified plaque? Can soft plaque cause a blockage as well?
Avatar m tn You could also ask about fibrates of fenofibrates which work in your intestines to help control the absorption of cholesterol. Niacin does not really do much to lower cholesterol. It increases HDL which is used to remove LDL from your system, however recent studies have found that HDL created by niacin use is not as effective as naturally occurring HDL particles. Can you tell me what your lipid profile is? Perhaps I can point you in the right direction with more information.
1135275 tn?1586565652 m asking is to what extent do they interact with each other? i guess an even bigger question is what exactly is the difference between niacin in a capsule and niacin delivered via food? or is there any at all?
Avatar n tn My husband is only 38, he had a stroke last year he had a stent put in, now he is on plavix, atenolol, hydrochlorothiazide 25mg, last week his doc added niacin 500 mg, simvastatin 20, flexeril and tramadol, also his one aspirin each day, these are just so many meds, are they safe?
Avatar n tn Thanks for your reply. I will check the ingred in the protein shake but this rash and reaction was not the same as the time I had the niacin "flush". I did go to the dermatologist and they suggested it was a piece of jewelry since it is localized to my neck and chest. They gave me a prescription for cortisone cream and it seems to be helping to lessen the redness and itching.
1495437 tn?1288798915 My father threw me in a bathtub with cold water, and was slapping my face trying to get me to breathe asking me what I took, I told him Niacin, and he called the ambulance. The ambulance came and transported me where they gave me an injection on Benedryl.. I was finally able to breathe. The next couple of days after that I started to develope these tiny reddish-brownish-pinkish spots all over my body. Especially my torso, arms, back, and thighs.
Avatar n tn Drinking hot drinks or alcohol can also increase the flushing, so it is best to avoid these when taking the niacin. Also, niacin should not be taken with certain drugs. I don't know what other medications you are on, but you should check with your pharmacist and make sure that they are compatible with the niacin. You should contact your doctor and let him/her know about your reaction to the drug. You and he/she can decide together whether it is best to stop the niacin, or continue.
