So I'm feeling a little sheepish asking this question, but this is my first pregnancy and the only time I've ever seen labor or a woman having contractions is on TV, which I would guess is not like the real thing. So how do you know when you're in labor? What does a contraction feel like, and how do you recognize it? Just curious, and wondering how I'll know when the time comes.

If you have back labor (which happened to me during my first labor), you might only feel cramping and pains in your back and they never come around to the front. This is usually caused by the baby facing the wrong direction and putting pressure on your tailbone instead of your cervix. As Mami mentioned, the cramping and pain will get increasingly harder and last longer.

that's probably a real contraction....I think there's too much emphasis on BHC and I truly do believe that you can have a "real" contraction without it leading to labor, because I KNOW what BHC feel like and they're uncomfortable, but I have regular, "real" contractions on occasion that are NOT BHC because they tighten my entire uterus and travel, just like you described...

You will DEFINITELY know it mama! They feel like menstrual cramps amplified by about 1,000. You will certainly not mistake active labor i promise! In the beginning they are much milder but they will progressively get stronger and more frequent! Good luck!!

Keep getting that tighting around my stomach with cramps. Just got two big ones and I was standing up and it felt as if I was gonna pee myself. I dont think these are BH anymore. Im currently 32weeks.my question is what do contractions feel like. I want to go to L&D but dont want make that trip if they are just BH.

Mine didn't feel like period pains. It felt like someone stuck a knife below my belly and twisted it around. My water broke at home, when I got to the hospital I was only 4cm but they did an emergency csection because my baby was breech. I don't even want to know what labor pains feel like past 4 cm it was horrible enough at the point I was at. I'm not looking forward to it a second time!

i have the braxton hicks quite often and only wish that is what real laboring contractions felt like!! what do the real ones feel like and why do they hurt so bad? is it the tightening that hurts or is it a sharp pain or is it the lower back that really hurts or does it feel menstrual crampish?? please enlighten me. i am quite the planner and it drives me bonkers that i am clueless to what i am in for!

Has anyone started feeling like labor is close for yourself? Lately I jus feel different. I feel like labor is approaching nd it's like almost here. Idk if it is or not but idk I have started to feel different than I ever have n it keeps me asking myself if its close. I know labor happens when it happens but I feel like I am so close to holding my baby girl. Is it jus me being anxious? Or is this a sign she is coming soon? I keep askin myself.

For you already mommies, what did it feel like when you started having your contractions? Were you sure you were in labor or not?

m 35 weeks with my first child, and I was wondering if any moms out there could tell me what contractions feel like. While I was loading the dishwasher today, I started to feel a sharp pain behind/to the left of my bellybutton. When I put my hand on my stomach it felt a lot harder than it usually does, but it only lasted for a few seconds. This happened three times for less than ten seconds within a ten minute period.
