Avatar m tn There are some schools for autistic children run by parents who have such children themselves. The medical evaluation can go as far as labeling the child as autistic. A child doesn't even start getting help before he or she turns 3. We are not that affluent that we can take our child abroad for evaluation. Sometimes he bangs his head on the ground so hard that it really makes us feel helpless. I wish we could give him some medication to ease his pain.
Avatar m tn It has to do with how the presence of ribavirin in the body can impact the development of the baby. As mentioned, if you think about alcohol and how it causes fetal alcohol syndrome, ribavirin can do the same thing in causing birth defects. Smoking causes lower birth weights, etc. etc. etc.

GACVS also concluded that there is no evidence to support the routine use of monovalent measles, mumps and rubella vaccines over the combined vaccine, a strategy which would put children at increased risk of incomplete immunization. Thus, GACVS recommends that there should be no change in current vaccination practices with MMR.

Avatar f tn The most critical period of its development is between three and seven weeks after fertilization, when a simple heart tube assumes the shape of a four-chambered heart. In fact, the heart actually begins beating by the 22nd day of life. When you are 5 weeks pregnant, your baby's heart is made up of two tiny channels called heart tubes and they're already hard at work, beating to their own drummer (it will be weeks before those beats become coordinated).
Avatar n tn org/diseases-conditions/ventricular-septal-defect/symptoms-causes/syc-20353495 Basically this is a hole in the heart and it most often forms during fetal development of the organ. The exact cause is really unknown although genetics and environmental causes could play a role and does often run in families. So, when your partner is pregnant, talk to their obstetrician so that they are aware. Prenatal care will be important as it always is but especially in this circumstance.

If they are not normal, then planning can be done to manage certain types of heart defects at birth, if necessary, OR planning can be made for termination of the pregnancy, if that is something that you would consider. As well, you probably will want to work with a high-risk Obstetrician, who is experienced in helping to manage these problems prior to delivery.
Avatar m tn Based on the tobacco experience, decrements in pulmonary function may be predictive of the future development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, in the absence of alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency, the habitual marijuana-only smoker would likely have to smoke 4-5 joints per day for a span of at least 30 yr in order to develop overt manifestations of COPD. The mutagenic/carcinogenic properties of marijuana smoke are also well-established.
