fetal echocardiography will NOT prevent problems, per se. They will inform you of the anatomy, function, and flow of the blood in the fetal heart, and make sure that things are normal. If they are not normal, then planning can be done to manage certain types of heart defects at birth, if necessary, OR planning can be made for termination of the pregnancy, if that is something that you would consider.
