Common Questions and Answers about Warfarin diet

Avatar f tn The amount of vitamin K in your diet may affect your response to warfarin. Certain foods (like green, leafy vegetables) have high amounts of vitamin K and can decrease your INR. You do not have to avoid foods high in vitamin K, but it is very important to try to maintain a consistent diet every week. Alcohol use also may affect your response to warfarin. Excessive use can lead to a sharp rise in your INR. It is best to avoid alcohol while you are taking warfarin.
Avatar n tn Hi, I was diagnosed with Pulmonary Embolism 3 years ago with hypercoagulability (genetic) and have been on 2.5mg of Warfarin per day for the past 3 years. I have just had an abdominal scan, and was told that I have a dense, fatty liver. I have tried to eat as healthy as possible, but had to cut a lot of greens out of my diet, as it affected my INR and would have lead to me having to increase my Warfarin dosage. Now I am not sure if this lead to the 'fatty liver'problem.
Avatar n tn A drastic change in diet can alter INR also, but in my own personal experience, it has usually been other meds that caused me to need to change my warfarin dosage and not my diet. An INR that is consistently out of range is dangerous. Don't worry about maintaining the same dose of warfarin. Worry about maintaining an INR that is consistently within range. Whatever dose of warfarin you have to take to stay in range is okay.
Avatar m tn Until 2 months back I was taking 150mg Ecosprin and 5mg Warfarin daily, then I was diagnosed with Hepatitis E and my INR value increased suddenly, so my doctor cut on the warfarin for few days until it dropped to <1.5 and then I started taking my warfarin again but my INR didn't increase. 2 weeks back my doctor increased my dose from 5 to 6mg but still my INR value is 1.4 and it is not increasing from past 2 months. Please help.
Avatar m tn Pradaxa is taken twice a day, shorter life in the body and is cleared from the body quicker than coumadin (warfarin). With warfarin, Vitamin K is used to reverse overanticoagulation in patients, there is no antidote for Pradaxa. Warfarin a lot cheaper than Pradaxa. Good luck with your ablation. Hope you do well on Pradaxa! Best wishes!!
Avatar f tn I take warfarin. I have a cut on my lip that will not stop bleeding. Can you help me with a way to do this.
Avatar f tn My Dad who is 77 has been on Coumadin since 2005 after a DVT following surgery, He also has Afib and has had it for years, due to a thyroid condition. he also has a pacemaker. He's been on Armour thyroid for at least 4 years, and tried Armour instead of Synthoid to see if he would feel better on Synthoid's alternative. Which he does actually feel better emotionally on the Armour.
Avatar f tn I test my own blood and adjust my dosage of warfarin. Usually I'm right in range 2.5 to 3.5 (2 art heart valves). About 6 to 8 weeks ago, I took augmentin for 10 days, 2 weeks ago, I took another antibiotic for 5 days. Since then, my PT/INR has been too low, 2.0. My diet and meds have stayed the same. I've been increasing my dose, yet it's still too low. Is it normal for this change? Please see my profile! Can it indicate my lupus activity?
1488195 tn?1288153991 I'm 85 and have been on Warfarin for 3 years. #1 - Is this the best treatment? #2 - Even taking thinners, can I stroke out at any time?

Avatar m tn I believe the correct (workable) way to take Warfarin is to find the dose level that keeps your INR in the desired range (usually 2 to 3) when you eat "normally".. just don't change your diet in any way that strongly affects you consumption of Vitamin K. Most foods do not contribute much "K", so keep it normal on those tht do, such a green leafy vegetables. I see no relationship between Warfarin and you leg problem.. are you on other medications?
942410 tn?1274047074 s why I am not going to be injecting the Lovenox any longer and today I skip my 5mg warfarin . I begin again the 5mg warfarin on Saturday and go for protime on Monday to see if it has come down a tad into the target range .
Avatar m tn I have been given two options a metal valve which i would have to take medication called Warfarin for the rest of my life. Or i could have a pigs valve fitted which i would have to have replaced every 15-17 years. 1569985 tn?1328247482 I take my warfarin before bed, so my time off warfarin is more like 1.5 days than two days. I go back on warfarin right after the exam, may take 7.5 mg instead of the usual 5 mg to get back on INR faster. I believe being off of warfarin increases my risk of a clot, but the risk is still low. Anyway, I split the difference toward the side of limiting clot risk while slightly increasing the risk of bleeding due to (minor) surgery.
1069105 tn?1256700412 s effect on warfarin is to be consistent with the diet. Warfarin is a vitamin K antagonist, and many foods have vitamin K, e.g. Also research drug interactions. -methyldopa for BP?? does she have some special need to take that outdated and dangerous drug for BP? - determine if being on HTM med is identified as a risk factor, even of BP is thereby controlled - the risk of bleeding.is meant to be on its own.
Avatar n tn Hi there, I started to take Coumadin in June after having a DVT in my right calf. I exercise regularly, and eat very healthy. I feel that I have packed on several pounds this summer, and haven't changed my diet or exercise routine. Could this be linked to Coumadin? Will I return to my comfortable weight when I stop taking Coumadin later this month? Thanks!
Avatar f tn I went to the doctor and they did an ultrasound and found a blood clot. They put me on Coumadin/warfarin and Lovenox injections until I get to the right dose of coumadin (which should be by this weekend). I was told that coumadin does not remove or breakup the clot it just prevents it from going to the lung/heart. But my question is when does the swelling from the clot go down and how does the body break it up or remove it on its own? And, how long will this take (approximately).
612551 tn?1450022175 I am a long time user of Warfarin anticoagulant because of my AFib condition. The generic Warfarin cost about $10 (Walmart for example) for a 90 supply. My wife recently had major surgery to remove cancerous organs and is required to take a daily anticoagulant for 30 days. In her case it is injected by syringe and each Cost about $50, throw away devices. That a whopping $1,500 for 30 days.
Avatar f tn My meds were changed from Metoprolol to Diltiazem 360 mg per day and Fleconade 50 mg 2x per day plus Warfarin. The Metoprolol 25mcg 1 x daily has been making me wheeze for the past four years, but no one ever thought to change the meds. I have been on this new med protocol for 1.5 weeks. I just started the Fleconide and Warfarin three days ago. My question is I need to loose 45 pounds asap.
Avatar f tn A person on warfarin with an inr of 1.2 is not at risk of bleeding out. They are at risk for a clot. People not on warfarin normal range of about 1 because they don't have a bleeding or clotting disorder, thus 1 is normal. I take 10 MG a day everyday and my inr was 2.2 just today. It all depends o. The reason behind taking it.
Avatar m tn Sorry to hear about your friends. In my opinion, Warfarin (Coumadin) is a very safe drug as long as the patient RELIGIOUSLY takes it exactly as ordered and goes in for regular lab work as often as the physician orders. That may be weekly in the beginning or at other times when the INR may be unstable. There are a number of medications that can interfere with Warfarin, as well as certain foods. Always ask the pharmacist before taking any new drug, especially over the counter ones.
Avatar m tn He was developing severe tiredness and hand pain. He was investigated by cardiologist and was administered for Warfarin Sodium treatment; since the heart turned weak and one of the chamber was accumulating blood clot. He was regularly (initially weekly and then bi weekly and now monthly) tested for PT/INR response to the drug. But, on routine check up it is diagnosed that his SGPT and SGOT Levels have touched alarming.
Avatar m tn I was diagnosed with AF 9 months ago. Went on Warfarin and then had a failed cardioversion. Went on Amiodarione and had a 2nd failed cardioversion. Was taken off the Warfarin and Amiodarone and told my AF is permanent and ablation unlikely to work either. Half the time I feel kind of OK ... then I get a few 'bad days' when I feel so dizzy and faint with mild tinnitus in both ears and edema in both feet/ankles. I just lie on bed most of the time until it passes.
Avatar f tn The good news I can offer, is I have been in and out of permanent AFib for 15 years and have been on Warfarin even when not known to be in AFib and I no blood clots have ever been detected. Some people have trouble with Warfarin, it takes a very regular diet to hold steady. Aspirin us usually, I believe, used if the patient can tolerate, taken with food I think most of us can. Warfarin requires reglar blood coagulation tests, aspirin doesn't.
Avatar n tn She was in hospital for about three months to be stabalized. At home now . three months.
