Common Questions and Answers about Diet for warfarin users

jantoven

Avatar n tn I have read many blogs and forums stating that users of warfarin have experienced this same side affect. Of course, my doctor and pharmacist are not aware of such a side affect and are not able to do anything to help. I have been running 25 miles a week and maintaining a daily caloric intake of less than 1000 calories. No weight loss in 2 weeks and gained 3 pounds!! Will I stop gaining weight due to warfarin and wondering if it will drop easily after discontinuing use.
Avatar m tn We are happy to announce that a Food Diary is available for you to use. This tracker will be very beneficial for those users who have dietary restrictions due to medical conditions such as diabetes and high cholesterol, and will also be useful for those who are simply trying to watch what they eat. In addition to providing a calorie counter, the Food Diary will also allow users to track their intake of carbohydrates, fats, protein, sugar, vitamins, minerals, and supplements.

Avatar n tn Hi, I was diagnosed with Pulmonary Embolism 3 years ago with hypercoagulability (genetic) and have been on 2.5mg of Warfarin per day for the past 3 years. I have just had an abdominal scan, and was told that I have a dense, fatty liver. I have tried to eat as healthy as possible, but had to cut a lot of greens out of my diet, as it affected my INR and would have lead to me having to increase my Warfarin dosage. Now I am not sure if this lead to the 'fatty liver'problem.

Avatar n tn A drastic change in diet can alter INR also, but in my own personal experience, it has usually been other meds that caused me to need to change my warfarin dosage and not my diet. An INR that is consistently out of range is dangerous. Don't worry about maintaining the same dose of warfarin. Worry about maintaining an INR that is consistently within range. Whatever dose of warfarin you have to take to stay in range is okay.
Avatar m tn I have undergone aortic valve replacement surgery in 2003. Until 2 months back I was taking 150mg Ecosprin and 5mg Warfarin daily, then I was diagnosed with Hepatitis E and my INR value increased suddenly, so my doctor cut on the warfarin for few days until it dropped to <1.5 and then I started taking my warfarin again but my INR didn't increase. 2 weeks back my doctor increased my dose from 5 to 6mg but still my INR value is 1.4 and it is not increasing from past 2 months. Please help.
Avatar m tn With warfarin, Vitamin K is used to reverse overanticoagulation in patients, there is no antidote for Pradaxa. Warfarin a lot cheaper than Pradaxa. Good luck with your ablation. Hope you do well on Pradaxa! Best wishes!!
Avatar f tn I take warfarin. I have a cut on my lip that will not stop bleeding. Can you help me with a way to do this.
Avatar f tn My only experience is Warfarin (generic Coumaden) for about 15 years. I'm at 5 mg daily, and 7.5 mg a couple of times a week. I am always in the 2-3 range, and guess Warfarin would hold be at 2.5 + if I took 7.5 mg a day. I am not suggesting a dose change, just sharing experience. I eat green vegetables/salads often and it doesn't seem to make any big change.
Avatar f tn About 6 to 8 weeks ago, I took augmentin for 10 days, 2 weeks ago, I took another antibiotic for 5 days. Since then, my PT/INR has been too low, 2.0. My diet and meds have stayed the same. I've been increasing my dose, yet it's still too low. Is it normal for this change? Please see my profile! Can it indicate my lupus activity?
1488195 tn?1288153991 I'm 85 and have been on Warfarin for 3 years. #1 - Is this the best treatment? #2 - Even taking thinners, can I stroke out at any time?
Avatar f tn I have recently been put on Warfarin for Paroxysmal Atrial Fib. I feel miserable and anxious on this drug. They continue to up my dose, 11mg. at present. I have decided to quit the Warfarin but wonder how to go about this. Do I quit cold turkey or taper off? Anyone else has quit Warfarin and how did you do it?
1042487 tn?1275279899 Healthy diet and good water intake is also important and as for what is a healthy diet i think i was clear above but i will be more clear. Eat whole, organic, unprocessed foods. Eliminate dairy foods that come from cows fed hormones that increases milk production. There’s no telling how they may affect your hormones. Go outside! Even a 30 mins walk is ok and considered exercising.
Avatar m tn My name is Joyce and I am 70 years old, I've been on Coumadin for over a year and my doctor has changed my dosage so many times, if your INR is too high do you take some vil."K",and what happens if it too low. my other problem is that my legs or rather the feet feel like lead, walking any distance is out of the question but my legs never felt like this, feels like my energy level is from 0-100, I feel like 15%. what can I DO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
942410 tn?1274047074 Thanks for the "green tips". At this point I am very careful about the green things I have in my diet. I was on warfarin once before when I was cardioverted a year and a half ago.( different Cardi). At this point my Cardiologist and I are working on keeping my INR at a theraputic level since I just "came off the table" from the ablation.
Avatar n tn why did my pharmacist change me to jantoven when I have been taking warfarin?
1013028 tn?1250923267 Thrombosis can be prevented with heparin administration and treated with heparin and warfarin. If clots occur heparin followed by warfarin ( coumadin )is usually prescribed. Higher-than-usual doses of warfarin may be needed. Warfarin or Coumadin is prescribed to prevent strokes arising from atrial fibrillation and DVTs forming in the legs usually.
5414022 tn?1367844243 There are just as many, if not more, Android users as there are iPhone users. You are shorting a large number of your users. If this is not addressed I will have no choice but to uninstall the app from my Android and use a different one.

1569985 tn?1328247482 I have to go off my Warfarin for a colonoscopy. The cardiologist's nurse said ask the doctor doing the procedure how long I should be off of the Warfarin. Doctor says ask the assistant when she gives me my instructions. Assistant says, "Oh, I'm supposed to tell you? Do you need a bridge medication like Lovenox?" Makes me a little nervous going off of it anyway and now this.
1069105 tn?1256700412 I take 5 mg of Warfarin a day for my AFib. I also take a low dose aspirin. I manage to maintain a INR between 2 and 3, the desired range. That means while I have "thinned" blood, my bleeding risk is managed by keeping the INR below 3. I have permanent AFib, that is I have constant AFib, not just episodes from time-to-time. I am 70 years old.
