Vytorin is a statin that lowers LDL and raises HDL. I believe Vytorin is a combination of Zetia and Zocor. I am not sure if the Vytorin will go with the Niaspam so you will need to ask your doctor that.

Omega 3 is great for the heart and keeps it healthy and slippery. I would check the Zocor studies or Vytorin studies and if you do not find any information there, check the Lipitor studies. Hi again, Regarding vytorin, it is a combo of zetia and zocor. There was a study that said that although the Vytorin will lower the cholesterol, it didn't have good effects to prevent heart attacks. Howeverk, Crestor was shown to reduce plaque and had better results in clinical studies. Also, with the Niaspan, it is known to raise HDL level but HDL is not necessarily protective as they thought. But that study may be skewed because it was done on all cardiac patients.

Has anyone read how horrific the side effects really are to some of these statins and realized that either they or their loved ones had these very symtoms and becames seriously ill to the point that they ended up in ICU not knowing who they were, where they were, in so much pain they could not bear to be touched and had regressed to near infancy before anyone figured out that it was zocor or lipitor or another statin they were on that was causing these bizarre illnessess ?

I was on Zocor (Sinvastatin) for several years and then my doctor switched me to Vytorin, which has Zetia added to the Zocor, because my total Cholesterol hovered around 200 with the Zocor alone. The Vytorin brought it down to 160, but then you see studies that say, Vytorin and/or Zetia have no additional benificial effect as far as heart desease is concerned. In any event, I had to stop the Vytorin because of severe side effects and I mean severe.

That vytorin study was very small, and included a very select type of cholesterol problems. I think it dealt with extremely high levels, like 3 or 4 hundred. My doc says to not pay any attention, until a much larger study is done.

There are all kinds of statins out there, as ed said, you have to find out which one you tolerate. I have been on them for many years as I was unable to lower my LDL with diet and exercise alone. They have worked well and I have had no side effects, but everyone is different. Most of these can be replaced by the generic Simvastatin. It's cheap and is the basis of many of the meds out there.

I've been taking Zocor for years, then they switched me to Vytorin, which is the same drug with another one added to it. Once in a while some of my liver enzymes are mildly elevated, but I've never noticed a problem that I could readily attribute to either pill. In mid December 2007, I was rushed in again due to a different artery being clogged. Both times the cardiologist blamed it on Zocor 80mg. I was put back on Lipitor 80mg after the October event. It says increases in liver enzymes occur in 1.7 percent of people taking Vytorin. This increase appears to be more prevalent in people who are taking higher doses. I was on Lopid, Mevacor, and Zocor, each of which helped only a little. Vytorin has my total staying under 150 and the HDL usually up to at least 40. No I am not a paid spokesperson for whoever makes the stuff. Wish I was; I'm sure there's a fortune in it.

I went for a routine visit to the ms clinic last week and told them about the zocor. WELLL.... it seems that there WAS some promising research so a very large study was started. According to my doctor, the study was STOPPED in the MIDDLE because they determined that the statins were actually CAUSING PROGRESSION of ms. He was very adamant that pwms should not be on these meds. Guess i need to get back to exercise and bad food :-) Hope I'm not repeating a recent topic...

Well, my Dr. put me on Zocor for high cholesterol 2 mos. ago...I noticed about 3 1/2 weeks ago that there was more hair in my brush...and, it felt thinner. Well, it's getting BAD! I called my Dr. this morning & they're taking me off Zocor which DOES cause hair loss, at least it is one of the side effects. NO guarantee that it will come back either!!! I tell Ya!!! Yes, I did find the study about Prozac and MS!!!! It was done in the Netherlands. 38 people completed the study. They took 20 mg of Prozac each day. Two thirds of the group on Prozac had NO new areas of inflammation while on the drug. 25 percent of the group on the placebo had new lesions. Detailed brain scans were done every four weeks. I had been taking Vytorin for about 3 years and prior to that Lipitor, Pravachol and Zocor for about another 7 years or so.

I have IBS with diarrhea. My family doctor gave me Vytorin and it caused ONE HORRIBLE bout with the diarrea. So, my question is: Should people with IBS not take Vytorin? If the answer is: No,they shouldn't,then why do you think this side effect is not listed on the pamphlet that comes with the drug.....or any where else?!
