The Christie administration estimated that New Jersey would reap as much as $80 million by seizing unused balances on gift cards, as well as retroactively seizing unclaimed travelers
checks dating back as far as 1994. In November
2010, however, a federal judge issued a temporary injunction against the state, halting New Jersey's plans regarding gift cards. The legal wrangling over the issue is ongoing.
And it's not just gift cards being squabbled over either.
