Valtrex is an acyclovir prodrug. Greatly simplified - you swallow valtrex and your body converts it into acyclovir inside the body. You get more active acyclovir available to kick a little herpes butt by doing it this way. That's why you take valtrex less often. We don't have studies to confirm that acyclovir reduces transmission the same amount as valtrex does but we assume it does.

I just am very new to this and started suppressive therapy today. What if i have an outbreak while im on it? Do i start taking Valtrex, 3 times a day and then continue my 1 a day after 7 days of the 3 a day? Im just a wreck about all this, it makes you so paranoid!
I think i may have acquired hsv in may, and i went on 1000mg suppressive therapy for a couple weeks and got off wednesday and i had sex for the past week leading up to that, and i stopped taking the valtrex on wednesday and now i have some redness under my penis but i think it could be from rough sex, there is no pain just some small red dots and dryness.
I just had a visit with my doctor and he told me that if my girlfriend was against taking suppressive therapy medication, that I should possibly consider taking them myself as a precaution. Even though I'm negative for HSV 2, he said it would help as a defense for my body from possibly being infected. He also mentioned an amino acid called Lysine, which he said is an alternative natural supplement that has shown to help reduce outbreaks and their severity.
I have been on daily suppressive therapy of 1 gram Valtrex for approximately 9 months now. I had my first child just over a year ago, and actually we had a scare that he might have contracted HSV-1 from me, so at 3 weeks old (given the seriousness of a neonatal herpes infection) he was subjected to a spinal tap, blood work, and acyclovir administered via IV for 2.5 days while we waited for test results to come back. Thankfully, he tested negative for the virus.
1.) Is valtrex worth my while or not? I keep reading that people do not prescribe daily valtrex to people with genital hsv1, but would it help at all?
2.) If I have no symptoms I assume I am also shedding asymtomatically Does taking valtrex daily reduce asymtomatic shedding in men with genital hsv1?
3.) If I use daily valtrex and condoms, what are the chances of me giving herpes to a girl who doesn't have HSV 1 in either place?
I have not had any outbreaks at all, I occasionally have burning and itching, but beyond that nothing else. I have been on supressive therapy w/ Valtrex since the end of may. I have had pain on lower right abdomen, under my ribcage it feels, and pain on my right lower back. Is this a symptom of Herpes, or can this be a reaction to the Valtrex?
OK. So its been nearly 2 months since I've been diagnosed with this inconvenience. Since I never had a "noticeable outbreak", every little itch or tingling that I get spooks me (The reason why I say that is because the time I had sex with my ex, I did have some tingling and 5 days later he had small blisters on his penis, so I know he contracted it from me).

Why is it that some people show conversion with Valtrex usage and others do not? Do you have patients who have converted while on Valtrex suppressive therapy. What is the sensitivity and reliability of the Western Blot. Why is it that suppressive therapy delays detectable seroconversion? Thank you!
I have been taking Valtrex regularly for 2 months and I have been taking 1 gram of Valtrex steadily for 2 weeks, and it is not going away. Valtrex has always worked quickly when I have had outbreaks in the past. The symptoms of this lesion (itchiness or soreness) come and go. What could be causing this? Could it be something other than herpes? Could the Valtrex be harmful to my baby? I go to the doctor again, soon, but want to be armed with all the inform. I can.
Antiviral therapy meaning Valtrex? Has there been any proof that this helps with EBV? Don't you have to have your blood work tested every three months if starting therapy with Valtrex? Can you elaborate more on the bacterial infection part? Do these always show up in your bloodwork? Mainly white blood cells?? Also, how is this addressed?

My doctor told me to stop taking Valtrex for a while to let my liver regenerate. While I think Valtrex is an excellent drug for treating HSV 2, I think users should take into consideration that long term use can cause some mild to moderate damage to the liver as my tests have proven. Also, anyone using Valtrex should not drink ANY alcohol while on it because it will exacerbate the problem with your liver. I'm hoping in a few weeks my liver tests go back to normal.

m one of the people who have had it for a long time and did not know it) and was given Valtrex to take to help with the outbreak. I have finished this and am now ready to start suppressive medication daily. My gyn has suggested taking 500mg of valtrex daily and my family docotor suggested taking 200mg daily of Acyclovir. From some of what I have read the Acyclovir dose she is suggesting isn't the standard and I have also read you can build a tolerance to it.
I've had hsv 2 for 7 years and have started suppression therapy on Valtrex for 6 months to prevent transmission to a new partner. It seems like i have way more outbreaks taking valtrex daily compared to in the past where i would take it just for an outbreak i would get maybe once a year. Has anyone else reported this? ) I was diagnosed in August of 2013, after second outbreak (1 sore) by a swab test. I have been on daily suppressive therapy of 1gm/day since then and am still having frequent outbreaks. My dr. has decided something must be wrong with my immune system, which has me completely freaked out. I have taken 2 OraQuick tests, both with negative results. I am severely anemic and Vitamin D deficient and take medications for that.
If you also use condoms and take daily suppressive therapy with valtrex, he has on average a 99% odd each year of NOT contracting hsv2 from you.
does daily suppressive therapy lead to resistance to the antivirals over time? no it does not. the rates of antiviral resistance are about the same even after 25+ years of medication being available.
