Valtrex studies

Common Questions and Answers about Valtrex studies

valtrex

Avatar m tn Well valtrex is generic now everywhere so it shouldn't be a money issue for most folks if they have decent prescription coverage with their insurance. Acyclovir is still way cheaper but if you have insurance coverage that makes generics low cost, valtrex is, as of this month, going to be WAY cheaper for you now :) the technicality to the answer to your question is this - only valtrex has been studied for reduction in transmission to a partner.
Avatar f tn My doctor told me to stop taking Valtrex for a while to let my liver regenerate. While I think Valtrex is an excellent drug for treating HSV 2, I think users should take into consideration that long term use can cause some mild to moderate damage to the liver as my tests have proven. Also, anyone using Valtrex should not drink ANY alcohol while on it because it will exacerbate the problem with your liver. I'm hoping in a few weeks my liver tests go back to normal.
Avatar m tn I need a valtrex prescription and the family doctor gave me some without prescription, the doctor asked to do a blood test for hsv type 1 (had around 6 cold sores at the time, valtrex worked wonders). At the time, I coudnt test for hsv because of taking valtrex but now i need a daily dose but i'm taking 1000mg lysine everyday. Will lysine affect the blood test result of hsv type 1? Do i need to stop taking it to test positive?
Avatar m tn t have studies to confirm that acyclovir reduces transmission the same amount as valtrex does but we assume it does. http://racoon.com/herpes/v_a_compare.htm this table comes directly from the valtrex full prescribing info. I've just put it on a page so you don't have to scroll thru all the prescribing info to find it.
Avatar m tn d try acyclovir suppressively instead of the valtrex and see if that works better for you. Even though valtrex is an acyclovir prodrug, some folks just do better on the acyclovir than they do the valtrex. My guess would be because you get less active acyclovir in your body with plain ole acyclovir than you do valtrex but we have no studies to back this assumption.
Avatar f tn some studies suggest that taking valtrex right from start (right after infection) might halt antibody production, causing false-negative results. but no reason to think that unless you had genital symptoms. no reason to doubt the results.
Avatar f tn Anyways I get bad coldsore breakouts so i take Valtrex daily to prevent them. Well I had a rapid oraquick test today at 5 weeks and it was negative. But I was told that antivirals could delay seroconversion and that valtrex could delay HIV bit I don't know of that's true sinc it's only for herpes. So is my 5 week negative prety acurate even with valtrex? Thanks I am just really worrying bout this a lot.
Avatar m tn I have read that if a couple where the male has HSV-2 and the female is both HSV-1 and HSV-2 negative does nothing more than avoid sexual contact during outbreaks, the female has an 8% chance of contracting HSV-2 genitally in any given year. However, if the male takes 500 mg of Valtrex daily, that percentage is reduced to about 4%.
Avatar n tn s a reprinting of a compendium of all the lysine and herpes studies out there for easy reference ( and beats reading thru all the studies individually ). The only studies that showed any reduction were rather small and it's a far less significant reduction in ob's than any of the herpes antivirals.
Avatar n tn I cannot imagine what having oral HSV-1 on top of my genital HSV-2 would be like given that my HSV-2 symptoms are so severe, constant and uncontrollable (see below). If the answer is yes, PLEASE direct me to studies so that I may further educate myself. 2) What is the next step if any for drug-resistant HSV-2? My neuralgia is terrible and occurs 24/7 and is NOT responsive to Valtrex (which I can't take anyway, as it causes explosive digestive problems). Thanks for any help.
Avatar f tn I have had only one outbreak, lasting 2 days since beginning the Valtrex. I called the makers of Valtrex to see if there were any studies done on effects of taking the drug longer than one year or if they had any data as to whether taking it for one year and then stopping it, seemed to lessen a person's outbreaks for a period of time. They would not give me any information, stating only that the only data they have ends at one year. Does anyone have any experience with this?
Avatar n tn studies have shown that even when it's "scabby" there can still be active virus being shed but it's a lesser amount and your taking valtrex reduced it greatly. Your hubby isn't worried so try to worry less yourself. Very few of us make it to the old folks home without hsv1 orally. It's THAT common.
Avatar m tn What is the maximum suppression dosage for Valtrex? One doctor told me it was 1 gram daily, but my current doctor prescribed 2 per day and said that was ok to take as long as needed. He said in an immune-compromised patient, it could be 3 grams per day as needed, but no longer-term studies have been done about it to determine the upper-limit of the max safe long-term dose. Is this the consensus opinion?
803834 tn?1286565337 Just wondering if anyone out there has taken Valtrex daily while pregnant??? My Dr. told me at my 1st visit that it was ok to take...also mentioned some women chose to just take during outbreaks instead of daily while pregnant, but it was up to me....just wondering!!!!!!?????
Avatar m tn Hi, I read that Valtrex prevents herpes replication. Would this medicine have any use in preventing possible infection of the ganglion? For instance, lets say you take Valtrex before or right after a sexual encounter or possible exposure. Would the medicine stop the replication of the virus inside your skin/body and prevent it from taking up a permanent home inside the ganglion?
Avatar f tn It may help with symptoms, but no studies have been done for transmission. If you are looking to reduce transmission to partners, the only known ways to reduce that are to use antivirals (Valtrex, acyclovir, famvir) and condoms, along with avoiding sexual activity when you have any symptoms. If you are looking to reduce outbreaks, studies are mixed for this. Here's a very small study that showed promise - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.
Avatar n tn That study observed a transmission rate of 1.5 per 10,000 episodes of sex from female to male (not the other way around as you suggest) and 8.9 per 10,000 episodes of sex from male to female. Over a year of 100 sexual episodes, this equates to a 1.5% infection (female to male) and 8.5% (male to female). This is a larger disparity than identified in some other studies. The study includes people that take antivirals and do not and use condoms or do not.
Avatar f tn I know there are not a lot of statistics on the reduction of asymptomatic transmission, but do you think it would have at least some effect? I have read at least two studies about Valtrex 500 mg reducing the risk of transmission of Herpes Gladiatorum in high school wrestlers, and since Herpes Gladiatorum is a form of HSV-1, I would assume that 500 mg of Valtrex would work for suppressing oral outbreaks and transmission as well. I am interested to know your thoughts. Thanks very much.
Avatar f tn I have been taking Valtrex regularly for 2 months and I have been taking 1 gram of Valtrex steadily for 2 weeks, and it is not going away. Valtrex has always worked quickly when I have had outbreaks in the past. The symptoms of this lesion (itchiness or soreness) come and go. What could be causing this? Could it be something other than herpes? Could the Valtrex be harmful to my baby? I go to the doctor again, soon, but want to be armed with all the inform. I can.
Avatar n tn t been any controlled studies done on the negative partners taking Valtrex for protection. In theory, it should work, but there's just no way to know. Have you been tested for herpes of both types? It's possible you already have herpes, in which case she can't pass it to you again, since you have the antibodies for it in your body. You both should get type specific herpes blood testing done to see where you're at.
Avatar n tn s important to remember that herpes transmission remains unlikely in sero-discordant couples. Studies proclaim that daily valtrex helps to protect partners - but the risk is never zero - and valtrex only lowers this risk by 1 - 2 %. As well, shedding studies are pretty mind-boggling aren't they? Why would anyone want to go and swab themselves daily ( thus increasing the likelihood of spreading?) - unless they were really poor and needed the money. It's a cold sore ffs.
Avatar m tn I am a 51 year old female with HSV-2. I have a new partner and want to protect him. He wants to have sex without a condom, but I am worried. I am one of the people that have a hard time controlling outbreaks. I have gone from being inactive sexually to active in a short time.
Avatar f tn ) If you are getting a lot of outbreaks, and since transmitting this is a big concern for you, have you thought about suppressive therapy? No studies have been done to see how effective it is on reducing oral hsv1 transmission, but it has been proven to reduce outbreaks. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17668537 The theory is that if it's working to prevent outbreaks, it would also work to reduce transmission, but studies haven't been done on this to say for sure.
