Avatar m tn - Dr. Keith Jerome at the Fred Hutch cured HSV in humanized mice (potential in 5-7 yrs) - IM-250 : tested effectively in mice - Univ. Penn mRNA vaccine proven effective in guinea pigs - Univ of Ill. at Chicago showed promise when using phenylbutyrate along side acyclovir Current treatments :: acyclovir (Zovirax), famciclovir (Famvir), and valacyclovir (Valtrex) The rabbit hole of "natural treatments" and remedies is never ending and fraught with peril, proceed cautiously.
Avatar f tn My doctor told me to stop taking Valtrex for a while to let my liver regenerate. While I think Valtrex is an excellent drug for treating HSV 2, I think users should take into consideration that long term use can cause some mild to moderate damage to the liver as my tests have proven. Also, anyone using Valtrex should not drink ANY alcohol while on it because it will exacerbate the problem with your liver. I'm hoping in a few weeks my liver tests go back to normal.
Avatar f tn is there a research group one could participate with, study and analyze past, present and future findidngs/options? i have been outbreak free for years and am almost certain i recently had my first outbreak in january - and they won't stop. i think the following has provoked the virus, as well as disable the latency stage: a. i took a strong proton pump inhibitor in january for my gerd - within a week i had a broken tail bone and rash of blisters across the bottom of my back.
Avatar m tn Oh and her getting obs while on valtrex doesn't increase your risk. Taking the higher dose of valtrex is really for her comfort.
Avatar m tn Valtrex is an acyclovir prodrug. Greatly simplified - you swallow valtrex and your body converts it into acyclovir inside the body. You get more active acyclovir available to kick a little herpes butt by doing it this way. That's why you take valtrex less often. We don't have studies to confirm that acyclovir reduces transmission the same amount as valtrex does but we assume it does. http://racoon.com/herpes/v_a_compare.
127596 tn?1210922622 Instead I found an empty bottle of Valtrex, prescribed to her. Needless to say, there was no way in hell I was going to use any toothbrush in there. Rather than blowing up about it, I came home and did some research. But I was sad to find that Valtrex is only prescribed for Simplex I, Simplex II and Zosters. So I asked her about it (via instant message - is that bad?). She said she gets cold sores sometimes, and the Valtrex gets rid of them quickly.
Avatar f tn I tested negative at 4 months but was worried that the Valtrex course I took at the start somehow messed up the tests. Grace assured me no. I inquired about taking the Western Blot at U of Washington and they gave me some assurances about my results and interestingly stated that in their research, Valtrex may delay seroconversion by week or 2 max. certainly nothing past 4 months. I thought this was interesting and worth sharing. Hope everyone is well.
Avatar n tn I was diagnosed with CAEBV in Feb of this year. My doctor prescribed 2g 2x/day valtrex. When I took it I couldn't move. I went from needing a rest after each activity to taking 30 minutes to figure out to move my body to the bathroom. My doc said I could reduce the dosage so I started taking 1g in the day and 2 at night. I was still very limited but could function for one activity a day and could lay in bed and read books/play games with my kids.
Avatar f tn I have had only one outbreak, lasting 2 days since beginning the Valtrex. I called the makers of Valtrex to see if there were any studies done on effects of taking the drug longer than one year or if they had any data as to whether taking it for one year and then stopping it, seemed to lessen a person's outbreaks for a period of time. They would not give me any information, stating only that the only data they have ends at one year. Does anyone have any experience with this?
Avatar f tn I am glad to know that there is some research confirming the efficacy of Valtrex on HSV-1. That is really what I wanted to know. I have never had what can be described as a "classic" symptom, but I have had cultures done on suspicious looking areas, and all have been shown negative, so I guess I should accept the result and really stop worrying.
Avatar n tn Lysine is not the same thing as valtrex - not even sorta. Research shows that it doesn't really do much for herpes either. Most folks already get more than enough lysine naturally in their diets anyways. How long have you been taking the valtrex? What dose are you taking? Headaches are a normal side effect of the herpes antivirals but they typically will go away in a week or two. What mad eyou start suppressive therapy?
Avatar m tn Hi, I read that Valtrex prevents herpes replication. Would this medicine have any use in preventing possible infection of the ganglion? For instance, lets say you take Valtrex before or right after a sexual encounter or possible exposure. Would the medicine stop the replication of the virus inside your skin/body and prevent it from taking up a permanent home inside the ganglion?
Avatar n tn As a stated on a earlier question per my research ASHA website they site a study on Acyclor claiming over 90% effective. On the Valtrex website the study shows to be 80% effective. Is this correct and how do you interpet this info. Please help me figure this out. Thank you very much, Liz.........
Avatar m tn , will the risk of transmission decline appreciably at some point making it reasonable to stop taking Valtrex?); (4) Are there any health risks from taking Valtrex on a long term basis?
Avatar m tn I was on Valtrex 500mg 1x/day for almost 2 years and never had an outbreak. I wanted to stop taking it all together to see what would happen. I had about 6 outbreaks in 1.5 years. I went to a new doc and today she said I need to go on suppressive therapy with acyclovir 800mg 1x/day. She said this is the new standard protocol (or something to that effect). I'm seeing where it says acyclovir 400mg 2x/day. My questions are: 1. has anyone heard of 800mg 1x/day is the standard? 2.
Avatar f tn Yes, was tested for everything cultures and bloodwork at initial presentation and all negatives. An external culture a week after showed heavy enterococcus bacteria for which I was given levaquin but told it wasn't the cause of the issue. Another internal bacterial culture was done with a repeat pap at 6 weeks, negative. At 8 and 12 weeks blood tests for hep c hiv rpr and herpes all negatives. At 17 wks herpes igg only redone and negative.
Avatar n tn She said the results were because the Valtrex influenced the test. But from my understanding, Valtrex submisses the virus and the IgG test tests for antibodies. Arent they two different things? This entire year has been a nightmare. My PCP told me with the orginal diagnosis that I was positive but not active, and therefore not contagious. She said I was exposed and had antibodies but since I had HSV-1 (since I was a kid) my body was able to 'fight off' the virus.
Avatar m tn Yes. You might want to consider reading my response (which includes a link to recent research on fatigue and mono) to lazylace (I believe that was his nic).
Avatar f tn Anyways I get bad coldsore breakouts so i take Valtrex daily to prevent them. Well I had a rapid oraquick test today at 5 weeks and it was negative. But I was told that antivirals could delay seroconversion and that valtrex could delay HIV bit I don't know of that's true sinc it's only for herpes. So is my 5 week negative prety acurate even with valtrex? Thanks I am just really worrying bout this a lot.
Avatar m tn She called me back today and said that she had done some research and found that Valtrex may cause a false negative spec HSV1 and 2 result. That I should take off the Valtrex and be tested in 4 months. I am in the process of having the molluscum biopsied for definitive diagnosis. Thoughts?
Avatar m tn I was dx-ed with CFIDS due to my neurological/pain symptoms along with my bloodwork that showed high EBV and HSV-1. I was moderately high on a couple other viruses (can't remember names). I went on Valtrex (1g/day) but haven't noticed any improvement or any change after 4 months. I had my bloodwork retested (now 4 months later) and the viruses looked to be the same or higher (EBV is 4x higher and I believe I was tested by same lab).
Avatar f tn Hi I was diagnosed with HSV2 in 2009. I took Valtrex 500 mg per day for about a year with no outbreaks. Then I started experiencing the tingling in my legs. It moved to my arms and scalp. My doctor told me if I wasn't having any outbreaks that I should stop taking it. So I stopped taking it in July. I had an outbreak two weeks later and decided not to use Valtrex. I used lysine and it went away in 7 days. Another two weeks and another outbreak.
