Since 50% and 20% of the US population has positive blood tests for HSV-1 and HSV-2, respectively, that proportion of people with neuropathy -- or with symptoms that might or might not be neuropathy -- will have positive tests for the two viruses merely by random association. By itself, a positve test for either virus will be meaningless in assessing the cause of your symptoms.
At 2 months post exposure I thought I was experiencing folliculitis and was overzealous with some razor burn wipes (containing alcohol, salicilic acid and glycolic acid) which I think gave me a chemical burn in my vagina and rectum-that was the only time that a provider looked and saw red raw patches near introitus and rectum and said could be wipes, yeast or herpes. All cultures negative. I was also experiencing some peripheral neuropathy.
Can herpes type 1 or even 2 cause neuropathy immediately after acquiring the virus???? In particular, the lower spinal area or give electric prickly sensations in the spine and all over the body?

neuropathy from herpes is very rare. in a small study on patients who suffered from it, they had a total disappearance of symptoms while on daily suppressive therapy.
yes indeed herpes does irritate the nerves but thankfully for most folks, it's not an issue outside of when they have active lesions present.
your symptoms you describe sound like something non-herpes related going on.
In large fiber neuropathy, it will be abnormal. Small fiber neuropathy can be diagnosed with a skin biopsy and with a test called a QSART. Medicine such as gabapentin may be useful in the treating of neuropathy.
If the symptoms migrate, seizure, migraine, or metabolic (such as low calcium) must be considered.
It is important to also realize that these symptoms may reflect emotional/psychiatric problems related to stress (what is called somatization disorder).

I've posted on here before but just wanted to get some feedback from the "old-timers" - it's been well over a month since my first obvious OB of genital HSV1 and I still have the constant tingling feeling going on down there... went back to my GYN who diagnosed me with a minor case of BV, which I was treated for, but said that everything else was completely cleared up and saw absolutely no signs of an OB. The tingles still continue...
5 mo 4th gen combo, 6 mo AB, 9 mo 4th gen combo and 9.5 RNA by PCA qualitative. 5 negative tests. I have been on 500 Valtrex once daily for 8 yrs for Genital Herpes suppressive therapy. I experienced early symptoms 2wks post exposure extreme itching vag and anus itching went away after diflucan but burning sensation has remained. Stiff neck headache never went away completely. Something has drastically changed.
I have experienced some form of my symptoms (tingling, itching, burning, swelling, neuropathy) every day since possible exposure which was december. Becuase of my constant symptoms...the doctor prescribed me "valtrex" just in case. At 8 weeks I took a 5 day dose. I think I spread out the the other 5 day dose (taking it very ireggularly after that). So i took a total of 10 days worth sporadically. At 14 weeks I tested negative for HSV-2.
Now have burning stinging in bulbs/ hands/ feet constantly and relentlessly ? Herpes neuropathy (god I hope not) started on valtrex which has helped immensely and cannot come off it as it all comes back - even on valtrex (500 mg) I have very slight continuous tingling vulva and worse in fingers....this has ruined my life....any advice? I remain unconvinced that it's genital herpes - could hsv1 be systemic without being an sdt?
What kind of testing have you had? There are loads of things that cause neuropathy that I'd consider way before I'd think of an STD.
That same year I went on Valtrex. But not before giving it to another mad. I was told he had symptoms within a week of being with me. I had sex while on my period at the time. After that I went on valtrex. I didn't have an outbreak for a year after that.
The following years the outbreaks have increased.
The second year was ok and the third not so bad ive even convinced a daughter without complications and I have been on valtrex this entire time.
My doctor (only at my insistance) also prescribed me some Valtrex. It made me feel like crap, but if you tolerate it fairly well, I would suggest low dose (maybe 500mg daily) for several weeks. Valcyte is the proper antiviral for CMV but it has a black box warning that it may cause cancer. Valtrex is only marginally effective with CMV but I believe every little bit can help. This is why I also take the Lysine.
I had unprotected sex with a sexually active male (I found out later) 3 1/2 weeks ago. (I have been married for a very long time and this is the only exposure other than my faithful husband). Within several days of the event, I had flu-like symptoms - night sweats, swollen glands, low grade fevers, facial tingling/numbness, fatigue. This lasted for about a 10 days. I have had 3 negative HIV tests (NAAT and PCR and antigen). I have been told these are conclusive.
So now that i found out that i have hsv-1 do i need to take valtrex everyday for the rest of my life if i dont want to get my partner infected?
My doctor told me to stop taking Valtrex for a while to let my liver regenerate. While I think Valtrex is an excellent drug for treating HSV 2, I think users should take into consideration that long term use can cause some mild to moderate damage to the liver as my tests have proven. Also, anyone using Valtrex should not drink ANY alcohol while on it because it will exacerbate the problem with your liver. I'm hoping in a few weeks my liver tests go back to normal.
I have not had any outbreaks at all, I occasionally have burning and itching, but beyond that nothing else. I have been on supressive therapy w/ Valtrex since the end of may. I have had pain on lower right abdomen, under my ribcage it feels, and pain on my right lower back. Is this a symptom of Herpes, or can this be a reaction to the Valtrex?
I have been on valtrex for the past 4 months (1 a day) if the symptoms I am having have not gone away for a period of 2 years ( symptoms are there for a week then subside for 2 - 3 days then come back ) this has been like clockwork for the past 2 years.
What is the possibility of being immune to Valtrex? Is there a possibility that after taking Valtrex daily that in a couple years it may no longer be effective?
my partner who i met has been on Valtrex for a couple of years and the pass year we had unprotected sex. I went and got tested and my blood work came back negative. She is ok with the results and angry that she allowed me to convince her and not using condoms. I just can't explained why we did it without condoms only that I love her and we are getting marry.
How would the Valtrex slow down antibody production? Would it suppress the virus to the nerve ganglia before the body can start to develop an immunity response.
Thanks. I have started daily Valtrex to reduce the risk of transmission to him. After much discussion, he has agreed, reluctantly, to find out his status. If he's positive for HSV 2, I'll discontinue the med. If he's negative I will keep taking it. I got your book recently and will I'm sure get a lot of information (and much needed strategies for getting my head around this) from the book. Two final questions for you:
