Patent comes off dec 2009 if I recall. As far as cost - if you have insurance once it's generic it usually goes on the cheaper generic copay list if you have that sort of insurance. so for instance if with your insurance you pay $30 for non-generic drugs on the approved list and $10 for generics on the approved list - you'd be paying $20 less/month for your valtrex. Typically it's 30% reduction in price when it goes generic initially for paying out of pocket.

Acyclovir is still way cheaper but if you have insurance coverage that makes generics low cost, valtrex is, as of this month, going to be WAY cheaper for you now :)
the technicality to the answer to your question is this - only valtrex has been studied for reduction in transmission to a partner. We'll never see studies with famvir or acyclovir either since both are generics and no money is to be made from doing the studies at this point.
s $30/month. Once valtrex goes generic - for my own insurance it drops it down to a $10/month charge for me. Because of the way I get a discount for using the mail in pharmacy - once valtrex is generic it will mean going from a $60 fee for a 3 month supply to a $20 fee which means I"ll save $160/year if I was on valtrex.
What is the procedure for getting a Valtrex prescription?? Every time I go to this doctor I go to, he writes me a prescription for 3 months. And when the refills are up calling in to ask for more is not an option. They actually want you to come into the office. I don't have time to keep doing this. And I really don't see the point!?!? The daily suppressive therapy are the ones that I will have to take every day for the rest of my life right? do you know how much they cost? are they expensive like the valtrex? and also. I have been this burning sensation for about 2 days. Could that be linked to the herpes virus. can how can i reduce the burning sensation I tired the epson salt bath and it works for a little while and stops.
I have read in various places that Valtrex is the only suppressive medication that has been proven in clinical trials to reduce transmission. I am under the impression, however, that this is simply because Valtrex is the only drug that has been tested for reduction in transmission.
My question is....since Acyclovir also suppresses the HSV-2 virus, is it likely that it will also reduce the risk of transmission? Or, is Valtrex a more effective drug and should I consider switching to that?

So i have Genital Herpes :-( I'm currently in mist of my second outbreak WHICH HURTS!!! I have more lesions than my first outbreak and really need to figure out if there is any relief during this time. Is Valtrex worth going on? I am still under my parents insurance and I'm DEF not ready for them to find out. I haven't even told ANY of my friends. I know that Valtrex is expensive and I was wondering if any of you take it, and if so how much difference does it make?
I have been tested since he was diagnosed, but it was several months ago. He is not on the daily suppressive therapy, he takes Valtrex when he feels an outbreak. Isn't the daily pill much more expensive? We don't have insurance, so that's why I ask.
my doctor said its the same drug as valtrex but with valtrex you can get away with taking it once a day. I also dont have insurance and can not afford valtrex so thats why im taking this generic. I take 400mg acyclovir twice a day (which was very hard to get used to, but you have to!) and I get 180 pills (90 days) at Hy-Vee (grocery store) and Sam's club for $10. Other pharmacies charge upwards of $80 for just 30 days.
My girlfriend was just given a prescription for Valtrex, however, even with insurance it is $75 a month. So, her doctor gave her another option in acyclovir, which was only $15 and had to be taken twice a day as opposed to one a day with the valtrex. Is there any real significant benefit to taking the Valtrex that would warrant paying the additional costs? Please let me know, so we can switch if necessary.
We do not use condoms, refrain from sex during an outbreak and I take Valtrex daily. I am fortunate enough to have insurance that covers most of the cost, but my situation will be changing and my BF and I will have to out wieght the pros and cons of taking an expensive drug everyday. Its all relative.
His foot wouldn't be herpes related. He should see his provider for a diagnosis.

Like most I cannot afford Valtrex any more. I have switched to Acyclovir. I've used it effectively for the couple of outbreaks but it seems to be taking considerably longer. I am taking L-Lysene as a suppressor and only take the Acyclovir at the first sign of an outbreak. I was taking 1000mg Valtrex at onset and then 500mg twice a day and everything was clear in 3 days. To get the same effectiveness from Acyclovir how much should I be taking daily during out breaks?
Have they checked you for yeast and bacterial infections? bv especially can mimick herpes as well as trigger more frequent ob's.
You might also want to try suppressive therapy and take herpes out of it. If you are still having these symtoms while on suppressive therapy then you know it's definitely more than just herpes going on. My doc put me on Valtrex to fight the EBV, and i have been taking it rfor a week and my lymph nodes are shrunken and i have waay more energy than i remember having in a long long time. try Valtrex, if u have insurance. with out it, it costs more than $500.
Her doctor prescribed Valtrex. We do not have insurance for prescriptions. Your comments in other threads seem to indicate that taking Acyclovir at 400 mg 2x per day is the equivalent of taking the Valtrex at 500 mg 1x per day. Is this correct? I hope so because Valtrex is $225 versus Acyclovir at $17 per month.
I also spoke to a friend who has had herpes for over 20 years before either drug was around....just topical creams.
I still have the itching,redness,soreness,anal itching and some surface sores even though I was taking the Valtrex daily. My insurance will not cover the Valtrex so now I am taking Valacyclovir(1 gram) daily. Do I need to take it twice a day? I really can't take the constent soreness,itching and pain almost daily and need some help.
Unfortunately I did not try everyday pill of valtrex since it is expensive in my place around 107 USD per 42 tablet and I do not have insurance coverage.
I will try my best to see a physician next month to do full STD screening and I will ask for his openion about supressive therapy and I am willing to pay, despite price, to see the results.

No one really knows this for sure. The chances of a quick kiss without a sore transmitting this is low - not impossible, but low - so try not to worry overly much about this. (I know, easier said than done, and it's not my daughter.)
If you are getting a lot of outbreaks, and since transmitting this is a big concern for you, have you thought about suppressive therapy?
If money is an issue for you (and who isn't it one for?), you can try acyclovir. It works just as well as valtrex, but you have to take it more often for suppression. If you don't have insurance, you can get a month's worth of suppression for about $30, give or take, in the US.
A lot of pharmacies also have savings programs you could sign up for. I just got 3 months of acyclovir for $21.98 on one of those programs.
