Common Questions and Answers about Valtrex info

valtrex

Avatar m tn Valtrex is an acyclovir prodrug. Greatly simplified - you swallow valtrex and your body converts it into acyclovir inside the body. You get more active acyclovir available to kick a little herpes butt by doing it this way. That's why you take valtrex less often. We don't have studies to confirm that acyclovir reduces transmission the same amount as valtrex does but we assume it does. http://racoon.com/herpes/v_a_compare.
Avatar f tn I postponed the trip to visit my guy friend (who is aware I have HSV) for 2 1/2 weeks and started taking Valtrex 500mg 2x per day on Saturday, less than 12 hours after 1st inkling something may not be right...had a bit of a flare up of IBS last week and typically go to the bathroom many times per day/my "normal"...Prep H did not help though, and don't have pain upon urination or defecation...
Avatar m tn Thanks for the info - very helpful!
Avatar f tn can somebody please clarify the difference in hsv 1 and hsv 2? the dr failed to explain much. and also im on a prevntative rx of valtrex. taking that and using condoms, is it 100% confined or can it be passed on?
Avatar n tn but i noticed w people tha have light to mild symptoms use acylovair and it does reduce shedding unlike valtrex.
Avatar m tn The NEW Doctor tells me that the only difference between taking Valtrex (what I have been taking) to Acyclovir (What they now want to prescribe) is the number of times a day you take it. I looked online...they say that Valtrex does a better job of helping you not to transmit the virus (most of this information provided by GlaxoSmithKline of course). The supression study has them identical. I am in a relationship where I really enjoy our "personal time".
Avatar n tn I'm glad you found us for all these questions :) First off yes your hubby should get tested for herpes too. The military doesn't include herpes in its std testing so chances are good that he's never been tested for it before. If he tests negative for hsv2 then I recommend further comfirmatory testing for yourself since your hsv2 igg is still on the low side. If he tests + for hsv2 too then there's less reason to suspect that you have a false positive.
Avatar n tn I have read that Valtrex and Valacyclovir can be used for the suppression of herpes , does that hold true for Valcivir also,, isn't Valacyclovir the generic of Valciver ,, if yes what is the usual dosage for the suppression of the virus?
Avatar m tn Dude, give me a shout...you should have my number on your messages....
Avatar n tn I recently tested positive for HSV2. Doc put me on Generic Valtrex for supressive therapy. I took 500mg once a day for about a week. The sore from OB has never been so bad or lasted so long. 6 days ago I started 500mg twice a day and still no relief. Could I be immune to the Valtrex? How long should it take to get relief? Awaiting call back from Doc but holidays and all...
Avatar f tn Well I've been on 1 mg per day since Oct because I'm so paranoid about an outbreak. The past 2 or 3 weeks I've felt occassional tingling on my upper lip and in the one spot that is right above my pubic bone. And the past 1 1/2 to 2 weeks I feel like my lymph node on pelvis occassionally flares up and I seem to feel a bit of pain that stays at the top of my thigh. I also feel like my breasts are also getting that flare up a little.
Avatar m tn hi there waring. thanks for the info as always. i found the link after doing a basic search on valtrex no condom. it was the second page that popped up.
Avatar n tn no he has no idea what he is talking about :( You don' t become immune to valtrex by taking it long term. we have info on the herpes antivirals used suppressively for almost 25 years now ( acyclovir ) and the rates of resistance are the same as they were prior to their use for herpes. no, his having herpes wouldn't have triggered a recurrence in you. was most likely coincidence more than anything. if this red spot doesn't clear up, follow up on it properly with your provider.
Avatar f tn Since being diagnosed two years ago, I still get an outbreak every two months. I only use valtrex when i have an outbreak (twice a day for 5 days), but my doctor says that even so my outbreaks should get less frequent over time. Anyone else have this problem?
Avatar n tn I'd stop the valtrex, then test again in a month to make sure, but chances are really good that you are negative.
Avatar n tn Of course that is correct waring :) Because there is more absorption of the active acyclovir from taking valtrex you only have to take it once a day. If you consult the valtrex prescribing info you'll see it compared to acyclovir in the one table and shows that they are comparable. All herpes antivirals have to prove that they work just as well as acyclovir to get approval.
Avatar f tn I have simplex one and I've been on the generic for Valtrex for probably a year now. My symptoms have of course completely cleared up although I was getting OB's about every 2 to 3 weeks. I also take 1000mg of lysine daily. I try to stay away from the things that I know trigger OB's for me. However I want to get off of the med's because I don't want to become dependent on them. But i'm worried that ill get constant OB's like I used to get. What should I do?
Avatar n tn So breaking up with him is the smartest step I will take. I thought that I could have some info based on the Valtrex dose he is on, so I could put my mind at rest a little until I get to get tested for HSV 2. I have checked out the PDR health website and the doses for both oral and genital herpes do not match with the dose he told me, although it is closer to the one for oral herpes (4 g on the first day). If you have any info on this, I would appreciate your response.
Avatar m tn Hi all. I was diagnosed with genital hsv2 3mths ago by blood tets (igg, not igm) and also swab/culture. Real bummer and i was p***ed off at the time, but not a great deal that I can do about it now except get on with things. Anyway, i wanted to ask you all about my symptoms before i get an outbreak. My bum bone and cheek muscles hurt for about 5 days before i get an outbreak. It's like i've sat down too hard on concrete. Is pain like this often seen?
Avatar f tn Anyways I get bad coldsore breakouts so i take Valtrex daily to prevent them. Well I had a rapid oraquick test today at 5 weeks and it was negative. But I was told that antivirals could delay seroconversion and that valtrex could delay HIV bit I don't know of that's true sinc it's only for herpes. So is my 5 week negative prety acurate even with valtrex? Thanks I am just really worrying bout this a lot.
Avatar f tn Hi. Just wondering the different between Valtrex and Acyclovir (benefits, symptoms, cons etc.) I know that the liver turns Valtrex into Acyclovir, but are there any other things I should know when picking a drug to take? Also is taking 400mg of Acyclovir enough for suppressing viral shedding, or is 400mg 2x daily going to suppress viral shedding that much more. What is an estimated percentage of suppressing viral shedding with both aforermentioned doses?
