I would not take Valtrex everyday for the rest of your life unless you want liver damage/failure. I took Valtrex for a little over a year to suppress the herpes and it worked well...only problem it that it elevated my liver enzymes which is not a good thing. Doctor told me to stop taking Valtrex and only take it if I absolutely need it, ie wedding, meeting, ect.

the only way to confirm hsv1 genitally is through a lesion culture and typing of active symptoms. it's really unfortunate that your provider you saw initially when you had symptoms didn't do a lesion culture and typing as they should've :( A visual diagnosis of herpes isn't enough.
your friend with herpes needs to 1 - confirm their herpes status. 15 years ago odds are proper testing wasn't done to know if they have herpes or if it was hsv1 or hsv2.
Is it ok to take more than one pill/treatment type for Herpes. I'm taking Valtrex 1 gm per day and also have started taking a pill from Herpaflor that contains Lysine, Purella Vulgaris, licorice root and vitamins A,C and zinc. I'm doing a lot of research on the internet trying to learn what other herbs I can use to help prevent an outbreak.
Is there something topical I can put on my upper lip and other areas that will prevent an outbreak from recurring there?
However, it is well documented that valtrex and acyclovir perform very similarly. Valtrex is actually converted into acyclovir by the liver, so essentially, the two drugs act the same way in the body to suppress the virus. If acyclovir improves your quality of life, I would stick with it and explain the similarities to your partner - they are well documented and I expect you can find information in scholarly journals that supports the suppressive activity of acyclovir.
I’m a 40 year old married male and never had any signs of herpes in my life until last year. I had unprotected sex with my best female friend in March 2011 and developed a few blisters around the base of my penis within a few days. I had sex with my wife during these days (before I noticed) and she developed blisters in the vaginal area a few days later. So within 10 days of the encounter both myself and my wife had blisters.
A month in he got what the doctors thought could be shingles and gave him a script for Valtrex. For the past 3 months his penis has been very sensitive and he couldnt last more then a few minutes during sex. After he added the Valtrex to the mix he cant even last a few minutes at all! We never had these problem before he started taking these medications. Is this a side effect of the medications? Is it common?
3 weeks ago I started feeling really ill, I got a very sore throat with swollen glands in my throat, headaches, etc.. a week later i got a cold sore. I was prescribed a two day dosage of valtrex and it went away, but my sore throat never did, this past week i have been freaking out about genital hsv1 because my lymph nodes in my groin were tender, i had pain/ numbness in my left leg from my butt to my knee, but so far no blister, no painful urination, no tingling in vaginal area.....
am dignosed with ebv since 4 months and
If I have a genetal herpes and my partner doesn't, i do want to keep it that way. By taking valtrex it doesn't 100% prevent the transmission, so they say we have to use condoms, which we don't prefer. So, my Question is how effective the Valtrex is and do you have anything else to recommend to prevent transmission without using condoms. Thanks.

I met a very nice guy who told me he was hsv2 positive (for 12 years now with 1 or 2 outbreaks per year). He also takes L-Lysine and Valtrex when needed. I appreciate how sincere he was to tell me, before we got involved sexually. I feel that we have so much in common and could be together as a couple. I got tested for both hsv1 and hsv2. The results were: hsv1 positive and hsv2 negative.
