Valtrex for meningitis

Common Questions and Answers about Valtrex for meningitis

valtrex

Avatar f tn Last summer I had my 3rd bout with meningitis caused by HSV-2. I have been religious about taking valtrex 500mg/day as suppressive therapy. About a week ago I started having a headache and a low grade fever, generally feeling like sh*t, and got the outbreak tingle down you know where... I never got the outbreak but I'm knocked on my butt and debating whether to go to the hospital for the meningitis.
Avatar f tn I had viral meningitis once that i know for sure. i went to the er with a horrible migraine which my mom thought was viral meningitis again but the doctor seemed to think i was just dehydrated and had a regular migraine.
Avatar f tn My husband had an affair. To make a long story short, we both have genital herpes. But this is where I don't understand. His came out in the form of meningitis. Mine came out on my hand. Now every few months I start getting neck pain and then it (the pain) literally comes down my arm. Then it will blister up in the palm area on my hand. It is so, so painful. I have been prescribed Valtrex and it works sometimes.
Avatar f tn is it possible that my boyfriend who gets cold sores is infecting me with the virus causing me to break out even though i'm taking 1 gram of valtrex a day for mollarets he also takes it for breakouts, i worry that we keep giving it back and forth to each other i am very careful about skin contact and anything else that i think the virus is living on like bedding the sink we share etc.
Avatar f tn There they did a lumbar puncture and told him he had viral meningitis, and started him on Valtrex, which is an antivirus for herpes. I haven't had any tests for herpes; I'm a virgin, and thus have never concerned myself with the possibility of an STD.
Avatar m tn Ended up at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St Louis, where after questioning me about everything, they decided to blood test me for Herpes. They prescribed Valtrex while waiting for results, and sent me home two days later (yes, the mega-dose of Valtrex had that great of an affect, even though it took me 6 weeks to fully recover from the meningitis). Upon returning home, I get a call from BJ saying my blood test came back positive for HSV 2.
Avatar m tn Thank you for your response. I have not been tested for Lyme or mono but will inquire with my doctor about that. Do you think my pubic outbreak and Bell’s Palsy could be linked to Shingles?
Avatar f tn m a healthy 24 year old female who has been suffering from this since Spring 2007 (came down with meningitis 3x in 3 months - acyclovir and Valtrex treatments did not work and resulted in renal failure). All 3 times, my spinal tap came back positive for HSV II. I am currently (and have been since August 2007) taking 500mg of Famciclovir per day. For the first year, I took 500mg 3x per day. The second year I reduced it to 500mg 2x per day because it was really hard on my body.
Avatar f tn 5 RNA by PCA qualitative and have been on 500 Valtrex once daily for 8 yrs. I experienced the early symptoms after exposure (didn’t know at the time I had no clue) but looking back on all my issues they are connected to that time frame. Something has drastically changed. I have a CT to check for meningitis on Tue, just got report of STAPH B positive, in constant PN, white tongue, headache, muscle aches, joint pain in left elbow. I will start a new thread once I figure out how.
Avatar n tn Third week into the flu symptoms began my neck started to stiffen up so went to ER for spinal tap for meningitis which came back negative for both viral and bacterial meningitis. Same week started to have headaches and now have sharp joint pains on my knees and hips area. I still feel tired and irritable after 4 weeks and doesn't seem to let up. Are all of these symptoms normal progression of oral herpes primary outbreak or do you think there something more here?
Avatar f tn They pretty much sent me home and told me that there was nothing else they can do for me I just had to take the valtrex and the pain medication and eventually go away well here I am two and a half years later and I've never felt the same sense I can't do anything.
Avatar m tn Strangely though, every time i take 1 gm of Valtrex, my head clears for awhile and i don't feel horrible - not great, but not horrible.

Avatar f tn 5 mo 4th gen combo, 6 mo AB, 9 mo 4th gen combo and 9.5 RNA by PCA qualitative. 5 negative tests. I have been on 500 Valtrex once daily for 8 yrs for Genital Herpes suppressive therapy. I experienced early symptoms 2wks post exposure extreme itching vag and anus itching went away after diflucan but burning sensation has remained. Stiff neck headache never went away completely. Something has drastically changed.
Avatar m tn Do you have experience with patients that had aseptic meningitis? Did they present without sores, and how long did it take for their serum IgG to show up? Did the meningitis present as the 'infection', and they had primary outbreak later or much later? Also, it is possible to get a primary outbreak after 2 months plus from the exposure?
Avatar m tn m also a bit irritated feeling down there right now. I was taking 2000 mg of Valtrex a day (for 4 days) because I was so worried about a virus (maybe Shingles). I had it in my medicine cabinet from my daughter that had one cold sore outbreak. I've lowered it to 1000 yesterday per my doctor who didn't like the high dosage with no confirmed diagnosis. Well, today, everything is heating up down there. Lots of weird sensations. Hope this too passes and is just "anxiety".
429949 tn?1224691579 Quix, I was wondering if you knew the answer to this question? Could meningitis of any type show up as white matter lesions? If so would they look the similar to MS lesions. And if a person did have meningitis would it still show up on spinal tap eight months after the onset, or would it be cleared out of the spinal fluid by then?
Avatar m tn Question for you... I MAY have contracted HSV 1 genitally. I had previously had blood tests done which showed that I have HSV 1, but not HSV 2 (I've had cold sores). As of a week ago, I woke up with very red patches on the inside of my foreskin. Went to the doctor, he swabbed it and it came back as negative for HSV 1. I took one day's worth of Valtrex and by the next morning, it looked as though the red patch was nearly gone. I stopped taking the Valtrex as of then.
Avatar m tn hi, i have been having mild symptoms which suggest some sort of meningitis in my opinion. basically it started two years ago with spasms in the tummy. and then spasms in my limbs, back as well as eyelids (twitching). from then on in the months to come, the above symptoms come and go, each time new symptoms accompany it. i experienced dull headaches at the back of the head. tingling sensation at the same area as well as down my spine.
Avatar n tn I've had a runny nose and cough for two months, along with a sore throat off and on (more on than off). No congestion. No sinus pain. No ear problems. Continuous symptoms, not a day in two months without. It started with a bad cold I had caught, and these particular symptoms never went away. Spring/summer is in full swing now, and my first guess would be that it's allergies, but I've never had this problem before. Itchy eyes and throat, yes, but not this.
Avatar n tn My doctor sent my to a Neurologist that had me get a MRI of my brain. The MRI was clear for suspected meningitis. The area that I had a break out was around my anus and my tailbone has been sore as well. It has now been 5 months since I was first having symptoms and 4 months since i tested positive. I have been to many different doctors as well as the ER a few times with all of my tests coming back that I am in great health.
7868606 tn?1410358984 Valtrex is usually for herpes infections and they usually just treat gbs with IV antibiotics when you're in labor so idk id call them back and ask why they gave you that?
Avatar m tn I saw a GP, who suspected herpes. I was put on a 10 day 1000mg per day valtrex course. On Sept 17 I had swabs taken on the thigh (although these pimples had by now burst and were crusting over) and from a small intact pimple. Both swabs tested negative for herpes by PCR. On sept 19 another (different) GP examined me and diagnosed herpes visually.
Avatar m tn Anyway, several months later I am in the hospital for meningitis after having a bad fever, headache, and stiff neck for two days. The CSF tests came back a few days later while I am still in the ICU, and the doctor said that it was herpes. I am very skeptical of this. First of all, they were trying to push me into agreeing that it was influenza instead of meningitis, and only after the LP did they stop pushing that on me.
Avatar f tn I recently went back to the doctor's office for a IgG test because I was told by a former partner that he may have HSV2 last year. I never had an official breakout but shortly after I started getting leg pain and sacral pain and the following month after coming back from vacation I got viral meningitis. I researched and found that nerve pain is associated with Herpes and that viral meningitis is also.
Avatar m tn I am confident in both these procedures and plan to follow these recommendations, to hopefully kill off the virus and inflammation for once and for all. The vitamin/mineral IV successfully cleared up an intractable case of pneumonia for me that had not responded to three increasingly strong rounds of antibiotics. So I'm describing all this here for those who have not gotten rid of their viral meningitis after a few months and are still suffering.
Avatar n tn with methotrexate, this probably occurs only with the very large doses used for chemotherapy for certain cancers. The doses for ongoing conditions like rheaumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, etc are not known to actually have these effects. I can't say it will never happen, but it is exceedingly rare. Also, even in people with profound immunosuppression, like advanced AIDS or terminal cancer, serious HSV complications are rare and easily treated.
