My daughter was diagnosed with Behcet's in 2008. Then in 2009 she contracted herpes (hsv2). She is now having an outbreak of herpes (starting to get under control after 2 rounds of valtrex, back on acyclovir for 2 days) and a flare of Behcet's. Prednisone will make the painful vaginal Behcet's lesions go away but will cause another outbreak of herpes.
Does anyone have any suggestions? She's about to leave for a required college trip.

I am trying to get an MRI w and wo contrast. I don't know how safe valtrex is but I have to save my hearing and language processing.
I've posted here on Prednisone before. I'm now on my 6th day of a 10 mg. tablets, dosage of Prednizone , going from 50 mg for 3 days, to 40 for 3 days, and now down to 30 for 3 days, then I'll do 2 and then one until it's gone in about a week. Also taking Valtrex (a viral med) for the treatment of nerve related hearing loss, due to a virus. I had an MRI and all was normal. During the week I've had intermittnent hearing loss in varying degrees.
Do not take NSAIDS they cause hearing loss, including aspirin, but there are benefits to taking aspirin
I'm sorry, but I have forgotten to include that I developed Bell's Palsy about 2.5 weeks ago, and just finished a 7 day perscription of valtrex (3/day) and predisone about 4 days before that first friday in my post. Bell's Palsy is associated with the HSV1 and I have gotten cold sores since i was really young, so I wasn't completely surprised about that. The bell's palsy is actually much much better now, and should get fully better in about a week.
MY last derma basically said she had no idea what to do with me becuase normally people dont have it persistantly like i do (not one break since august except when on prednisone), and her pts normally respond to valtrex and had no idea what to do beyond that. She just tried me on dapsone and im pretty sure it actually made it worse, if thats even possible.
About 2 months ago, after swimming at the YWCA, I developed a rash on my back and on the buttocks, and down the back of my legs. I went to my Dr, who put me on an antibiotic and prednisone. Within a week, it cleared some but never really went away, and yes, it was itchy. A month or so later, the rash came back, and I was put on prednisone again plus a cream. It cleared up. Now it's back again. I am suppose to have knee replacement surgery in a few days. What could this be?
I am suffering the same exact symptoms and it has been 2 weeks since I stopped taking Valtrex and have been on prednisone and atarax for the itchy rash that is so random and comes and goes. It is driving me insane.

t is almost like I never took anything for it. The itch is unbearable.
I mentioned immunosuppression when you only meant suppression. Valtrex is an antiviral and not an immunosupressant.So this may not really affect treatment given for the impetigo.
Is your child on any other medications? Does she have asthma or allergies which need to be maintained on prednisone or other corticosteroids?
Is she under a lot of stress lately given that she is away from home and in college?
Is she getting enough sleep and eating well?
most folks who do, experience it initially when diagnosed and go on valtrex and are incredibly stressed. for most , it does come back. I do know of less than a handful of folks who experienced hair loss while on valtrex, they could find no other cause for it and even after stopping the valtrex the hair loss did not stop.
at this point continue to follow up on this with the dermatologist. they are your best bet.
It burned and itched and I went back to the doctor and he prescribed me Valtrex and Cefdinir. Went away for a week and came back. Began with lips swelling again and then sat night into sunday it started oozing. Sunday at 7am i went to the hospital and was prescribed valtrex, prednisone, and oh gosh i'm blanking on the other antibiotic. It went away and a week later I got a cold. Then (first time this happened) I noticed a white blister on the inside of my lip.
I do know this was a horrible and scary incident that could have taken a terrible direction.
On a final note, the original doctor way over-prescribed her. On the manufacturer's homepage it clearly states; "for cold sores, one pill in the am and one in the pm, FOR ONE DAY ONLY!" I hope this information may help should this ever happen to anyone else.

After I posted this I talked to the hospital doc about my negativ test result. She didnt think Valtrex had interferred with the results. I have had "herpes symptoms" four months, taking Valtrex last four weeks.
Maybe I could have a new test taken in a couple of weeks when my system is clear of Valtrex? Just to be on the safe side?
Just no it is all too confusing. One doc says: HERPES! The other says: no this is not herpes.
Thanks for the reply. Well if valtrex doesnt affect the results,wouldnt 55days be enough for conclusion? As doctors say 6weeks is quite enough for antihiv tests except cemotherapy patients?
Finally I broke down and in seeking relief on four ocassions and took 2000 mgs of Valtrex and awoke syptom free only to have the symptoms return the following evening. It seemed to help for a short period. Since I had nearly nine months straight without suppressive therapy would it be OK to take the WB now? It has been 26 months since the initial episode. In total I have had at least 11 months without suppressive therapy which includes the first nine months of possible infection.
If I stop it for a week do I wait to see if symptoms persist? If not begin again, or ask my doctor for an alternative? If so what should I be asking for and are they as effective as Valtrex?

I have been taking Valtrex regularly for 2 months and I have been taking 1 gram of Valtrex steadily for 2 weeks, and it is not going away. Valtrex has always worked quickly when I have had outbreaks in the past. The symptoms of this lesion (itchiness or soreness) come and go. What could be causing this? Could it be something other than herpes? Could the Valtrex be harmful to my baby? I go to the doctor again, soon, but want to be armed with all the inform. I can.
I recently was diagnosed with Herpes I've yet to go get a blood test done but I was put on Valtrex. I was so scared that I went and bout an Oraquick test I tested negative, two days later I still couldn't get it out of my mind and went and got two more tests while on Valtrex and all three said Negative. I know this question is asked over and over but, are my test conclusive even on Valtrex? My last exposure was 9 months ago if that wasn't clarified?
