Valtrex and liver problems

Common Questions and Answers about Valtrex and liver problems

valtrex

Avatar f tn Side effects with valacyclovir, including liver problems, are extremely rare. Even if Valtrex was the cause of his elevated liver enzymes, most people with mild enzyme elevations do not go on to more serious problems. Most important, stories of rare adverse effects shouldn't change anyone's treatment plan. People don't have greater risk of lightning strikes just because someone else gets struck!
Avatar f tn Valacyclovir rarely has the liver effects that rorainbow has experienced, and there are no scientific reports that liver problems (or any other adverse effects of valacyclovir) are any more frequent with alcohol intake. If NR was also drinking a bit too much when his enzymes rose, I don't see any reason to invoke valacyclovir as the cause. That would be like a guy getting whacked by a baseball bat and then attributing his headache to a brain tumor.
Avatar m tn Also, if I take Valtrex 500mg every day for the forseeable future are there any risks? i.e. kidney/liver problems down the track etc? Thanks.
Avatar m tn symptoms....took Valtrex at the start and the symptoms went away but the outbreak of a blister started and the Valtrex made me more comfortable while I heal. Hope this helps.
Avatar m tn in the meantime I have opted NOT to take the Valtrex until I am 100% sure I do in fact have herpes. I have read that it causes liver problems and weight gain. but I am so depressed and having major issues now with my BF who swears he has been faithful to me... I am strssing bigtime and have sceduled an appointment with my regular physician for later this week. can anyone please tell me if they have experianed anything like this??
Avatar f tn My 29 year old daughter had a severe and frightening reaction to Valtrex. She had cold sores and began taking 500 mg Valtrex, per script. She took one in the am and one in the pm for five days, and as adverse effects appeared, she cut back to one in the pm for four more days. She progressively became psychotic, experiencing altered states of consciousness, panic attacks, uncontrollable crying, tremors, and extreme fear. Blurred vision and the inability to focus were also taking place.
Avatar n tn Thank you for your response. I had taken Valtrex quite a few years back and came off it due to stomach pains and the fact that it is processed by your liver. I had a family member suffer liver problems due to taking on going anti inflammatory drugs. I did stay on it for about a month.
Avatar f tn causing liver damage. It simply is not true. There are great differences between drugs and the various antivirlas have widely different toxicity and side effect profiles. I wonder whether your doctor is over-interpreting guidelines for using the anti-HSV drugs. The official prescribing information advises stopping the drug periodically, like once a year. But that's not because of toxicity.
Avatar n tn He also told be to have my liver tested at the same time, since he said the valtrex filters through the liver and he wanted to make sure everything was working good and told me to drink plenty of water while on valtrex. He wanted me to do this after I had been on valtrex for a bit, so that they could make sure my liver was handling the valtrex good. I have no liver probs at all. This last doc I went to asked if I had any lesions and I said yes but told him they had broke already.
Avatar f tn They are very itchy and quite painful to touch. My Doctor put me on both valtrex and a steroid cream to cover both... Ive been on them for 3 days and have significantly improved. So now I'm wondering if it is herpes or dyshidrotic eczema?
3229560 tn?1347037510 Just make sure Lerner is the last name.. And that the subject is EBV and CFS and Valtrex, and read what his study shows. All I know is I am doing so much better !! I would have never thought a few months back that I would ever feel even half way good again, it's just so good to not feel so sick everyday !!! I did find out if your on Valtrex to drink allot of water !! I am going to have my Kidneys and liver function checked every 3 months for now.
Avatar f tn I have been taking Valtrex regularly for 2 months and I have been taking 1 gram of Valtrex steadily for 2 weeks, and it is not going away. Valtrex has always worked quickly when I have had outbreaks in the past. The symptoms of this lesion (itchiness or soreness) come and go. What could be causing this? Could it be something other than herpes? Could the Valtrex be harmful to my baby? I go to the doctor again, soon, but want to be armed with all the inform. I can.
Avatar f tn If you are looking to reduce transmission to partners, the only known ways to reduce that are to use antivirals (Valtrex, acyclovir, famvir) and condoms, along with avoiding sexual activity when you have any symptoms. If you are looking to reduce outbreaks, studies are mixed for this. Here's a very small study that showed promise - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3115841 Here's one that showed a reduction in recurrences, but not in healing time - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.
Avatar f tn Refrain from smoking, alcohol, fuzzy drinks and spicy food. See if this helps. Pancreatic and liver function should be assessed. Do consult your doctor and discuss this. Take care!
Avatar m tn Well, on one hand you are saying that the only that helps you is Valtrex and on the other, you're saying shouldn't Valtrex take care of it if is herpes. I've given you my opinion on all of this. If you believe it is herpes and Valtrex makes it better, then I am not in a position to try to convince you of anything else. If you have eye problems, you should see an eye doctor as soon as possible. This is my final post on this thread.
Avatar f tn Hey dewitt, its okay if you are using valtrex for some relief, but its the the ultimate treatment, you need to understand how to create self-belief and self-confidence and the other part is lengthy yet simple but can't be discussed here. So, leave me a pm and we will sought it out together, and please at first, don't use valtrex too much as it has severe after-effects.
Avatar n tn I ran out of the Valtrex, and was debating getting more. We do use condoms, and practice good hygeine, and I honestly feel for me the risks are lower unmedicated since I have fewer and less severe symptoms. That first medicated one was SO BAD and seemed to last forever. I was miserable. Thanks for the validation!
4152590 tn?1350772856 One other problem I have had is gas and diarrhea... And I mean BAD! I also have lots of memory problems... Good luck to you and I pray Alls well!
Avatar f tn Hi for suppression and valtrex per terri warren it would be 1000mg once a day for those who have 10 or more ob per year and 500 mg for those of 9 or fewer. So since 1000 = 1 gram that would be correct. You could also talk to your doctor about recurrent ob doses which is 2 grams twice in one day, 12 hours apart. Its not necessary to take it more than one day for the greatest benifit.
1383377 tn?1279384982 I am an alcolic...and about 2 weeks ago, my doctor took tests on my liver and the results came back very bad, especially for my age(23). Apparently my liver is seriously damaged. I haven't drank since I heard the news but what I want to know is...if I get a new tattoo....can my damaged liver prevent it from healing right? I know the liver filters the toxins in your body and helps you recover, but would my liver affect my new tattoo in any way? Does anybody have any idea??
Avatar m tn Luckily, I recognized that I had Shingles fairly early in the outbreak, got a prescription for Valtrex, and had no residual nerve damage. But I do know people who have had severe cases of Shingles with major outbreaks and blistering and weeping. Some of these people have gone on to have persistent nerve pain even after the outbreak had cleared up. Even though I had a rather mild case, that nerve pain with the outbreak was very painful.
Avatar n tn And she put me back on Cipro this time for 10 days and they scheduled me for a sonogram of my stomach, liver spleen, etc. that came back w/ a result of a enlarged spleen & I tested positive for EBV @ this point I never even heard of EBV. So it's been almost 4 weeks been through bouts of extreme tiredness and weakness just pass out @ random.
Avatar m tn HSV-1 is less susceptible to Valtrex and related drugs, so the necessary dose is unknown and might be higher than for HSV-2. Also, asymptomatic shedding is less common with oral HSV-1 than genital HSV-2. Finally, the main strategy for protecting your partner probably should be for him or her to be tested for HSV-1. There is a 50-50 chance of a positive result, in which case s/he is not susceptible and you need take no precautions at all. To the specific questions: 1,3) Answered above.
