I have been on valtrex for suppression of hsv 2 for 16yrs and continue to have outbreaks almost monthly. Sores in vaginal area are less noticeable but other symptoms such as fatigue, headache, swollen glands, back pain still persist. My husband and I both have an outbreak every time we have sex which is ruining our sex life. Long term effects of valtrex use is unknown outside of possible renal/liver imparement & I'm just not sure if I should continue taking it.
First off I just want to say that HHH gave you a very detailed reply on his forum that I hope was helpful. I'll gladly handle the pain issues at this point :) I'm glad you went and had another work up done and got valtrex. It will take a bit longer to start working at this point but it'll help.
A sitz bath set up is easier than pouring water as you pee - depends on your coordination. Something to consider. It sounds that you really have a humdinger of an ob going on.
most folks who do, experience it initially when diagnosed and go on valtrex and are incredibly stressed. for most , it does come back. I do know of less than a handful of folks who experienced hair loss while on valtrex, they could find no other cause for it and even after stopping the valtrex the hair loss did not stop.
at this point continue to follow up on this with the dermatologist. they are your best bet.
acyclovir is 400mg 2x/day every single day. she will still get recurrences while on daily suppressive therapy regardless of if she's on acyclovir or valtrex, you just take acyclovir more often than you do valtrex.
After I posted this I talked to the hospital doc about my negativ test result. She didnt think Valtrex had interferred with the results. I have had "herpes symptoms" four months, taking Valtrex last four weeks.
Maybe I could have a new test taken in a couple of weeks when my system is clear of Valtrex? Just to be on the safe side?
Just no it is all too confusing. One doc says: HERPES! The other says: no this is not herpes.
Thanks for the reply. Well if valtrex doesnt affect the results,wouldnt 55days be enough for conclusion? As doctors say 6weeks is quite enough for antihiv tests except cemotherapy patients?
Finally I broke down and in seeking relief on four ocassions and took 2000 mgs of Valtrex and awoke syptom free only to have the symptoms return the following evening. It seemed to help for a short period. Since I had nearly nine months straight without suppressive therapy would it be OK to take the WB now? It has been 26 months since the initial episode. In total I have had at least 11 months without suppressive therapy which includes the first nine months of possible infection.
If I stop it for a week do I wait to see if symptoms persist? If not begin again, or ask my doctor for an alternative? If so what should I be asking for and are they as effective as Valtrex?

I have been taking Valtrex regularly for 2 months and I have been taking 1 gram of Valtrex steadily for 2 weeks, and it is not going away. Valtrex has always worked quickly when I have had outbreaks in the past. The symptoms of this lesion (itchiness or soreness) come and go. What could be causing this? Could it be something other than herpes? Could the Valtrex be harmful to my baby? I go to the doctor again, soon, but want to be armed with all the inform. I can.
I recently was diagnosed with Herpes I've yet to go get a blood test done but I was put on Valtrex. I was so scared that I went and bout an Oraquick test I tested negative, two days later I still couldn't get it out of my mind and went and got two more tests while on Valtrex and all three said Negative. I know this question is asked over and over but, are my test conclusive even on Valtrex? My last exposure was 9 months ago if that wasn't clarified?
I am going through a very uncomfortable situation and i will try to make this as short as possible. I had an HIV Exposure DEC 31 2015, I did a 4th gen HIV Test at 10 weeks result was negative then I did an oraquick at 6 months came back negative. However i had been drinking wine before the test was done and didn't wait 20 min. 2. Unfortunately i came positive for HSV 2 And HPV and develop a few warts in the anal area which are now been treated.

My doctor explained to me that taking Valtrex on a regimen would help the virus become dormant. I have never had one but I know I could still carry the virus. I was drinking from a straw and then my elbow bumped it. Any chance of getting the virus on my arm from this? I don't believe I have any open skin on my elbow but I went ahead and used purell on it. After, I realized that the hand i used to rub purell on my elbow had a small cut. Any chance of whitlow from this?
I was aggressively treating it as a yeast infection which I have previously had several times in the past years. I finally went to a clinic and the doc said it looked like herpes. He prescribed valtrex and within a day or two the entire area was healed...no sores, no scabbing, no redness. He did a culture while I was in the office which I got the results for 7 days later. They said, "positive" for herpes simplex.

HSV-1 is less susceptible to Valtrex and related drugs, so the necessary dose is unknown and might be higher than for HSV-2. Also, asymptomatic shedding is less common with oral HSV-1 than genital HSV-2. Finally, the main strategy for protecting your partner probably should be for him or her to be tested for HSV-1. There is a 50-50 chance of a positive result, in which case s/he is not susceptible and you need take no precautions at all.
