Valacyclovir suppression

Common Questions and Answers about Valacyclovir suppression

valtrex

Avatar n tn I have read that Valtrex and Valacyclovir can be used for the suppression of herpes , does that hold true for Valcivir also,, isn't Valacyclovir the generic of Valciver ,, if yes what is the usual dosage for the suppression of the virus?
Avatar m tn What is the normal dosage of valacyclovir for suppression? I have read several places say 500 mg some say 1000. What is right or normal dosage?
Avatar m tn What about with valacyclovir have you had any diahrria with that one or have you heard of anyone else haveing it. With the Famvir it was really bad. It was like I was peeeing out the wrong end litterly. Sorry for being so graphic but it was bad. One more question. Since I havent had any ob's since the first one in December do you think I need to start being on the suppression?
Avatar n tn t want it there so I started to take Valacyclovir it would keep breaking out every month or so I went on a daily maintenance of 500mg a day. When ever I would miss a pill I start feeling the sensation which I felt when I was going to get an outbreak. I would keep taking it for 5 years. I wanted to stop taking it so I had read some Medical Article's online that Valtrex can rebound.
Avatar m tn I've read thru the threads and done research but am still confused. This is exactly what my doc has prescribed: "valACYclovir 1000 MG tablet Commonly known as: VALTREX" I assume this is Valtrex but the ACYclovir in valACYclovir is confusing to me. Is this Acyclovir or Valtrex?
Avatar f tn Acyclovir would not interfere with accuracy of you HIV test. Don't worry about that. In terms of your frequent cold sores - there is absolutely no reason that you should not continue your suppressive therapy. Your doctor is out of date on this one. If he refuses to continue your suppressive therapy you can do one of two things: 1) find another doctor who is more to date on the use of suppressive therapy.
Avatar f tn I have been on valtrex for suppression of hsv 2 for 16yrs and continue to have outbreaks almost monthly. Sores in vaginal area are less noticeable but other symptoms such as fatigue, headache, swollen glands, back pain still persist. My husband and I both have an outbreak every time we have sex which is ruining our sex life. Long term effects of valtrex use is unknown outside of possible renal/liver imparement & I'm just not sure if I should continue taking it.
Avatar f tn I have been on an off valacyclovir for about 5 years or so. Due to my recurrent outbreaks during my pregnancy I have been put on Valcyclovir for daily suppression. 500mg daily and 1000mg during outbreaks. Outbreaks last about 3-4 days. A recent outbreak has just about healed and yesterday was the fourth day of 1000mg. However, yesterday afternoon I noticed what I thought were prodrome symptons although I thought I could be wrong due to the increased dose of medication.
Avatar m tn I started suppression famciclovir over the weekend and had diahhrria 5 times the next day. Has this happend to anyoone else? Please share your side effects of any other meds or meds that gave no side effects. I have to call the doc and get something else.
Avatar m tn I use valacyclovir for suppression (500-1000 mg per day) and for episodic therapy (2000 mg twice in a 24 hour period). I agree with your doctor.
Avatar f tn I have been on valacyclovir on and off for about 5 years. I have had recurrent outbreaks during my pregnancy and was recently put on daily suppression of 500mg, with an increase to 1000mg during an outbreak. This occurred because I had three outbreaks pretty much back-to-back. Each only lasted 3-4 days but had a other one to take it place.
Avatar f tn But is 500mg of valacyclovir a day a good dose for suppression?
Avatar m tn Finally, with regard to valacyclovir, I think your question meant to distinguish between 1000 mg twice daily for therapy and once daily for suppression is this correct?
Avatar m tn m getting mixed messages in eagards to Valtrex dosages during an outbreak. I currently take 500 mg of Valacyclovir daily as a suppressant. But I am still having outbreaks. When having one do I increase my dosage? I asked my doctor and she said no since it was already in my system just continue taking the 500mg daily. Also it seems since I've gotten the diagnosis, that I'm having more outbreaks, could it be I need a stronger daily dosage for suppression?
Avatar n tn I tested positive for HSV-2 back in November. Doc put me on 500mg Valacyclovir once daily for suppression. Last week I had an OB and can't figure out why. I read somewhere that almonds can somehow trigger an outbreak. I was eating a handful of almonds everyday for the health benefits. Could this have caused the OB? I read somewhere else that taking Lysine can counter the arginine in almonds. Is it safe to take Lysine along with my Valacyclovir? Would it help anything?
Avatar m tn One last question (I promise), in people who have outbreaks and use valacyclovir for chronic suppression, is there any clinical or research evidence of resistance the the drug emerging over time.
Avatar m tn It went away in a few days, and she asked the doctor to go on preventive viral (valtrex) and the doctor gave her 500mg 1 times a day - valacyclovir. NOW (JULY 2) she says she thinks she has it again, she has a rash and it hurts. Can HSV1 occur this often?? Could it be something else causing the rash?? Thank you.
Avatar m tn I have been taking 1000mg of valacyclovir daily to suppress. Outbreaks used to be bad and frequent but the last outbreak I had was in June of 2021, so the valacyclovir seems to be working. No other issues I'm aware of in that zone. Could someone advise what the fluid might be? What might be done? II shower daily and practice good hygiene.
Avatar m tn Second, in some persons valacyclovir suppression does not completely eliminate recurrences but reduces their number and severity. Further, it is typical that for persons with recurrences while on valacyclovir suppression to get a better result with the higher, 1.0 gram dose than the 500 mg dose. As far as other drugs are concerned, famciclovir works in a way similar to valacyclovir so I see no benefit in changing drugs. So, what to do.
Avatar m tn ) the infected person should take suppressive therapy with an antiviral medication such as acyclovir or valacyclovir. While all 3 available antiviral medications are likely to work since their mechanisms of action is the same, only valacyclovir has been studied for this purpose and therefore can be considered to be "proven" for this purpose. Daily suppressive therapy will reduce recurrences, reduce asymptomatic shedding of the virus and reduce transmission.
Avatar f tn I wanted to know in percentages please what are the odds that I could transmit my infection to an uninflected male if we do not use condoms but I am put on a daily antiviral? Also, I have heard that hsv1 is less susceptible to valacyclovir therefore a higher dose might be needed. Is it okay for me to take 1g everyday? I am just concerned about how taking this dose everyday would affect my body as in my liver/kidneys. Please Dr Handsfield I would greatly appreciate your advice! Thank you!
Avatar n tn Saw my OB who said he saw a fissure and inflammation and said maybe it was coxsackie virus?!? But the valacyclovir cream does seem to help! Had the blood test AGAIN (Nov 2008 - 2 years after first sx) and was again neg (HSV1 0.14 and HSV2 0.06). It seems like herpes but all tests are negative. What are the chances that BOTH my boyfriend and I did not make antibodies after years in (i.e. are false negatives)?
Avatar m tn On the day of the test, I had just got done taking the Valacyclovir for 5 days(that I got online and took on my second, third and fourth outbreak symtoms in April May and July). I had not stopped taking the l-lysine for the whole period as a precaution and to reduce symptoms/outbreaks although its not proven.
