1) I have the beginnings of a cold sore on the lip. For Valacyclovir and Valtrex the recommended dosage is 2000mg every 12 hours...total of 4000mg in 24 hours. I have 2000mg of Valtrex and 2000mg Valacyclovir from prior outbreaks. Can I take them together for the some effect? Or do I need to take the 4000mg total dose with the same drug?
2) I am getting cold sores on the lip up to 3 times a year. There is no common catalyst. Each outbreak if not treated early is as severe as all the rest.
Hi, I'm a 37 yr old female. I was diagnosed with herpes in April (but I've known that I had it for almost 2 years). My doctor prescribed me with generic Valtrex and to take 2 pills when I feel even a slight tingling or what I suspect to be an outbreak. I've had sex with a man 3 times since being diagnosed. All 3 times we used a condom before any penis to vagina contact was made AND I took a Valtrex pill before intercourse.

The general risk of STDs from oral sex really isn't the issue here, is it? It seems the only concern is transmission of HSV, right?
You certainly could acquire oral herpes due to HSV-2 by performing oral sex on your partner, if he happened to have an outbreak or to be shedding virus without symptoms at the time of the exposure. Similarly, oral sex by you on him could transmit HSV-1 to his penis.
There is no reason to worry that taking your vitamins and valacyclovir at the same time might interfer with the effectiveness of each other. Please do not worry about this as a possible cause of your recent recurrences.
Generic valacyclovir is equally effective as the Valtrex brand. If it isn't working, it suggests that the problem isn't herpes. Probably the best approach at this point is to promptly (within a couple of days) get professionally examined to confirm the diagnosis of the current problem. I'm not necessarily doubting that you have genital herpes, just questioning this particular episode.
Alternatively, is there any possibility you have newly acquired herpes?
He did warn that there is no conclusive evidence showing the effectiveness of early valacyclovir treatment eliminating the herpes virus. But for a paranoid individual like me, anything was worth a shot.

Hey Docs, I'm confused about the effectiveness of condoms during vaginal intercourse as protection against HSV2. Both Dr. Handsfield and Dr. Hook say that condoms (used properly) reduce the risk by 'at least 90%.' In other posts the risk has been described as 'virtually zero' or that there was 'no risk because you were condom protected." Here's the confusing part.
I talk valacyclovir for herpes out breaks I have a high dosage one for when I get them it doesn't harm the baby.
Though this is my first pregnancy and I'm 7 weeks.
They told me once I get closer to my due date to take them daily so there is no break out.
t want it there so I started to take Valacyclovir it would keep breaking out every month or so I went on a daily maintenance of 500mg a day. When ever I would miss a pill I start feeling the sensation which I felt when I was going to get an outbreak. I would keep taking it for 5 years. I wanted to stop taking it so I had read some Medical Article's online that Valtrex can rebound.
I'm not sure that I understand your response.
1. I think that you meant to say that "experience tells us that when people ?quit? taking the valacyclovir, they sometimes do have an outbreak soon after that." This is my concern, that the valacyclovir takes over and that the body's immune response is less engaged in fighting the infection. Do you see what I mean?

As such I contacted my doctor and was prescribed valacyclovir hcl which I took (2 1 gram tablets twice daily). The cold sore remained small and eventually went away. After this I went 1-2 days without taking any Lysine or valacyclovir and on the second day I noticed the cold sore coming back again and now appears to have come back and crusted over. I did not think the new cold sore was actually one but then it crusted over.
And although recurrent outbreaks can occur while taking valacyclovir, they are rare -- and monthly is unheard of. It is possible your HSV has become resistant to the drug, but that's quite rare as well.
As for valacyclovir side effects, you needn't worry.
Once again I am finding different rates of effectiveness. Typical solutions include abstinence, followed by some protection from barriers. There is the question of prophylactic valacyclovir. No vaccines yet, but some old trials were mentioned vaguely.

I was diagnosed with Herpes 33 years ago and have been using 1000 mg Valacyclovir a day for the past 4 years and have been free of outbreaks until a few weeks ago when I lost my job and became quite stressed.
I was able to take one extra tablet of 500 mg which stopped the outbreak from turning into blisters, but I am concerned if this medication is not working for me anymore.
I also wonder if Valacyclovir is the same as Valtrex or if Valtrex is stronger?
I appreciate your help.
I'm on daily 1 gram valacyclovir for suppressive therapy. I can feel a new outbreak coming. Would it help if a take the valacyclovir twice daily for a couple of days to help with the OB?

What are the contraindications of taking penicillin and valacyclovir during the same cycle ? Can they both be taken on the same day ?

If you were my patient, I would advise you that your age alone protects you from pregnancy. That combined with the tubal ligation should approach 99.9% effectiveness. I wouldn't ever give 100%. If you are that concerned you could use condoms as well, but really don't need to .

I got infected with genital herpes about 5 months ago, from unprotected oral sex from a striper.... I took valacyclovir 1 g twice a day within 24 hours of the initial episode, and kept taking it until I got better, which took a while (a month almost)....
My symptoms (ulcers, itchiness and pain/discomfort) have been recurrent and very persistant since. I think I have had symptoms 3-4 out of every 5 days since day one.
I have read that Valtrex and Valacyclovir can be used for the suppression of herpes , does that hold true for Valcivir also,, isn't Valacyclovir the generic of Valciver ,, if yes what is the usual dosage for the suppression of the virus?
I had a standard HIV test done on the first day of symptoms (about a week after my last sexual exposure) and that test came back negative. Doc now has me on valacyclovir because he thinks i have oral herpes. The valacyclovir has taken much of my fever away. And the nystatin and valacyclovir have together mostly cleared up my tongue sores and blisters. But I feel like without the valacyclovir, i'd be very very sick. Also my lymph node on the right side of my groin is still quite swollen.

Would you double the valacyclovir dosage or at least up it? What about for long-term suppressive therapy? If someone could in particular elucidate how valacyclovir works and WHY it would be important/ unimportant to adjust that dosage based on wanting to suppress both conditions, you would have my eternal thanks.
