Avatar n tn I'm guessing that s/he is not a diabetes specialist and that's the type of physician who should be guiding your diabetes care. Specialists might be called endocrinologist or diabetologist. None of us here is a physician, but we're long-time diabetics or care-givers for diabetic children. You didn't mention if you've been diagnosed with Type 1 or Type 2, and the treatment options vary for these types. Your instincts are good, Candikane.
1469903 tn?1286650297 Of all the patients with diabetes, only approximately 10% of the patients have type 1 diabetes and the remaining 90% have type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes was also referred to as non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM), or adult onset diabetes mellitus (AODM). In type 2 diabetes, patients can still produce insulin, but do so relatively inadequately for their body's needs, particularly in the face of insulin resistance as discussed above.
Avatar f tn Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease of absolute or inadequate production of the pancreas, and/ or the body’s resistance to insulin. It is a long term and a lifetime illness that is projected to be the second debilitating disease, causing most of the world’s mortality and morbidity. DM itself does not necessarily cause life threatening scenarios but its complications do.

Avatar f tn There are no high quality data on the efficacy of the dietary treatment of type 2 diabetes, however the data available indicate that the adoption of exercise appears to improve glycated haemoglobin at six and twelve months in people with type 2 diabetes. There is an urgent need for well-designed studies which examine a range of interventions, at various points during follow-up, although there is a promising study currently underway.
Avatar m tn Hello, Polycythemia causes blood cells to grow abnormally in the bone marrow and can be primary or secondary. In primary polycythemia, intrinsic factors in red blood cell production cause an increase in red cell count. In secondary polycythemia, external factors result in polycythemia. Reducing risk factors for heart failure, such as, controlling high blood pressure and diabetes mellitus, can potentially reduce the risk of polycythemia.

Tracy Swan from Treatment Action Group and Jules Levin from NATAP are experts on this subject and that is where I am getting most of my information regarding resistance and the fact that no one can say that it is totally gone unless the patient is put on drugs again. .

427279 tn?1210923421 The main use for metformin is in the treatment of diabetes mellitus type 2, especially when this accompanies obesity and insulin resistance. Metformin is the only anti-diabetic drug that has been proven to reduce the cardiovascular complications of diabetes, as shown in a large study of overweight patients with diabetes.[10] Unlike the other most-commonly prescribed class of oral diabetes drugs, the sulfonylureas, metformin (taken alone) does not induce hypoglycemia.

921323 tn?1268679412 Some say, why don’t we save the millions of dollars spent on drug research and instead invest them in education, legislation, and regulations that will help us eat better and exercise more? Put the money towards the health costs of the uninsured. Or, use it to fund research in diabetes, heart disease, or any of the other countless complications of obesity. But is it too early to admit defeat?
Avatar f tn Obesity is associated with significant morbidity, including hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia and hyperuricemia. You should consult an endocrinologist for a proper assessment of your condition. Treatment plans should include medical management of the underlying disorder (if any), weight-loss programme, dietary and physical activity management, nutritional education, behavior modification and family involvement.
