I tried tegretol once for a month but gave me headaches that was the only MS i used before my today lamictal. In the USA they don't use it anymore because it's interactive with other drugs. Trileptal is its cousin though weaker and as IL said doesn't need blood test.
Incidentally lamictal sometimes they mix it with depakote it says in its brochure.
I wonder why he recommends tegretol. Is it he is suggesting any MS and that's all.
I was on Trileptal for a while. After that my psychiatrist transferred
me to Lamictal. It took some time to have the withdrawal symptoms to pass
(and the efficacy of the other medication to start) but it settled after some time. Generally things begin to improve within a few weeks. As long
as you followed your psychiatrist's titration schedule it should be fine.
Keep your psychiatrist updated on how you are doing and they
will know how to follow up.
I think Geodon is for BP patients who have equal mania and depression or more on the manic side (as opposed to Lamictal which is used for greater depressive BP). Trileptal is very similar to Tegretol - in fact, I think they are the same molecule but varied somewhat. I've read a statement from a Psychiatrist that Tegretol is always more successful for them than Trileptal is. Go to Bipolarworld - the Dr. in charge of that wrote a abstract of his experience using Tegretol vs Trileptal for BP.
75mg zyprexa, 50mg Topimax, 300mg Seroquel, and 350mg Trileptal at nightime. I take 300mg Lamictal and 350mg Trileptal every morning. I sleep all night, and want to sleep more. I've had bloodwork done the past few months and my thyroid always comes back alright. I see my counselor every other week, but it is really difficult to get a work in appointment with my psychiatrist. He's always booked for the next 3 months and it's very frustrating for me.
i say my new neoro today and he wanted me to look at 3 other meds(lamictal, topomax, and trileptal) and they all have just as bad or more side effects including severe acne.
ive been trying to ghave a good attitude but its starting to get to me and it has almost eliminated my social life. i dont care what ppl think. acne does make a difference and i dont think a good looking girl would like me with my face all messed up.

lamictal and trileptal do affect birth control pills and vise verse i.e. you can get pregnant using these as they reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills by 40%to 50% ,,,,,,,,,,also (which done me a great harm) the birth control pills reduce the effect of BP meds up to 50% also.
i read on some site (but i cannot remember which) that birth control pills can affect most of psychiatric meds.
I'm on Lamictal and it's working well for me so far. It is a slow taper, 25 mg every two weeks until 100 mg, then you can go up by 50 mg every two weeks. So it takes a while to work, but it's really good for the depressive phase. It's great for BP II, and it's approved I believe as an add-on med for BP I stabilization.
Topomax does get used for bipolar, but it causes major cognitive side effects in a lot of people, to the point of getting nicknamed "Dopamax".
Keep in mind that everything that works has side effects. Not everyone will get every side effect, and some are more likely than others, but you won't really know without trying, unfortunately. An off label use is one that the FDA hasn't approved the medication for, e.g. trazodone as a sleep aid (it's approved as an antidepressant).
Couldn't say which is best to use but Lamictal was the most effective for me as well as other people and generally used more than the others. Trileptal unlike Tegretol (which its clinically similar to) does not require a blood test. Neurontin and Topomax don't but they are generally used as adjuncts. I was not able to tolerate Keppra because of personality changes and its not used often for this exact reason.
-- What do you think? --- Do the Lamictal first, or immediately go with the Lithium. --- Another thing I am considering is the current events in my life, loss of home, no work, no money, kids with health problems, still getting over the death of my wife 3 years ago, no friends, no social life, I have horrible self esteem, I don't want to do anything... Seems that these are having a pretty large impact on my mental state. Meds aren't going to make things all better on these fronts.
I found Lamictal the most tolerable. Lithium was highly effective of course but I had some trouble tolerating it because of cognitive confusion and weight gain but its the most effective mood stabilizer in general. As for Tegretol (the clinical name of what the other medication was) I tend to be concerned about that one because it made me psychotic and it can often lower the blood level of an antipsychotic in people, which is the reason why. However, some people find it effective.
For the last 6 years I've been seeing my psychiatrist every 4 weeks. For the last 2 years she's been pushing Tegretol on me. That's in addition to Abilify, Buspar, Lexapro, and Tofranil.
The last time I was hospitalized for psychiatric reasons the psychiatrist there in the hospital put me on 600mg of Tegretol nightly. I was a zombie for the 6 months that I gave it a full shot.
Hi, I would have to do some research on a lamictal tegretal study. I'm not sure whether lamictal is licensed in the UK, something else I shall have to look into.
The Lamictal does make me somewhat tired but I take it with other meds that do knock me out. Lamictal is a mood stabilizer and not a antiphycotic like Seroquel. You may want to do some research on Lamictal and Abilify. Sorry I can't help you anymore than I have, perhaps someone else on this site can give you a better answer.
