trigeminal-neuralgia

Avatar f tn Did you ever get a reply? Sounds like Trigeminal Neuralgia Type 1 or Atypical. There is help for this! Same needs used for seizures help condition and pain attacks. Tegretol is one but many more. Thank you Neurologist treats TN. Studies happening now.
Avatar m tn There is a chance of a misdiagnosis here if Tegretol is not working. It is the gold standard for treating trigeminal neuralgia. If it is not working, it may possibly be pain of some other cause. The neurologist may be able to help you sort this out.
Avatar m tn It is highly unlikely that drug or medication can provoke trigeminal neuralgia. What I really meant was some medications such as tegretol, anticonvulsants, for example, neuron tin are very promising to treat trigeminal neuralgia. In addition, surgical procedure known as microvascular decompression is promising and yields long term therapeutic effect. you do need to see a neurologist to be fully informed of all available treatment options.
Avatar n tn I suffer from Trigeminal neuralgia since 2005. For first few years I didn't have to take any meadication. Since 2010 attacks were frequent. I am on Tegretol 50mg am & 50 pm. The side effects are terrible, feeling extremly tired & also feeling low. Some times I have to increase the dose& it's unberable. Is there alternative?
Avatar m tn Does Trigeminal Neuralgia worsen with age. I've tried Tegretol but the pain has some back agaiin after about a year and is very, very intense. It is like a needle made of glass penetrating the right side of my nose and going into my head. What is the best treatment for this and can it be cured completely. Avatar f tn Carbamazepine (Tegretol) was first used to treat trigeminal neuralgia in the 1990s. Because of its success in treating that painful condition (which is very difficult to treat), it was then used to treat all kinds of neuropathic pain. While it may be useful, there are more modern medications that may help if you have a neuropathic pain problem -- for instance, Neurontin (gabapentin) and Lyrica (pregabalin).
Avatar m tn I'm 26 and I have had Trigeminal neuralgia since I was 12. So far Tegretol and Gabapetin have done the trick. However I'm at the highest doses and the pain is returning. I have a lypoma (fat tissue) on the nerve and had some of that removed when I was 14. I'm looking for a good Nuerologist who know about TN and is in Toronto. Can anyone give me a suggestion. Or any other advice on how to deal with this.
Avatar n tn This drug is mainly used in the treatmen for seizure disorders, trigeminal neuralgia (pain). Dosage is 100-200 mg once or twice daily until unless changed ny a competent physician.
Avatar f tn org/posts/Multiple-Sclerosis/Attack-of-trigeminal-neuralgia--OMG/show/2646953#post_12856616) I moaned about it, but I have to say it was excruciating. Fine now, at least from that standpoint. The standard treatment is Tegretol (carbamazepine). It turns out I can't tolerate that, as a reasonably effective dose wiped out my balance and had me staggering all over the place. It also almost destroyed my platelet count, which was down to 23.
Avatar m tn I used to drink very heavy 15 years ago but then stopped for a long time and then started doing it sensibly. I then stopped 3 years ago to look after my mum who became ill. I was doing fine until last year when I started getting shooting pains up and down the left side of my head which has now gone inside. I also have nystagmus and tachardiya. My neurologist says I have trigeminal neuralgia but the symptoms don't seem to be improving despite being on Tegretol and Gabapentin.
429700 tn?1308007823 Sounds like Trigeminal neuralgia (TN). The Trigeminal nerve has 3 main branches. There are motor component along with the sensory ones. It can cause motor tic and was known as tic douloureux at one time.
Avatar f tn One of the causes of Trigeminal Neuralgia could be tumors. The Trigeminal nerve and its branches touches many parts of the face including the sinuses. (Google Gray's Anatomy (bartleby.com) for good diagrams of where the Trigeminal Nerve is). I personally have not heard that TN loosens teeth -- although pain in the teeth and gums (because of all the areas the nerve touches) is common.
Avatar m tn Hi, Thank you for your question. This may be Trigeminal neuralgia as you have typical one sided facial pain extending to temple and eye( ophthalmic branch of trigeminal nerve may be involved) and sore gums of the teeth of same side (maxillary branch of 5th nerve). Trigeminal neuralgia may have a triggering factor like recent history of tooth extraction, touch, cold breeze or hot sensation etc. which you need to evaluate and avoid.
Avatar f tn My sister in law is diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia ... she is currently on Pregalin 75 for 6 weeks ???
Avatar m tn In 1974 similar pain started on the left side of face the surgeon diognised as trigeminal neuralgia in the 2nd branch. since than I am on tegretol and gabapentin, both this medicine do control attack, with the help of remmissions i have managed to avoid surgery, as this would lead to my entire face being numb for ever. The pain has returned just last week, after 2 years remission. I started on tegretol 200mg 3 times a day and neurontin 300mg twice a day.
Avatar f tn Tegretol is the medication of choice for trigeminal neuralgia. Have you gone to the dentist to make sure you don't have a dental issue that should be fixed? Dental issues can inflame the nerves under the teeth and the pain can migrate into ear and sometimes face (generally not lightning bursts like TN) so it's a good idea to make sure you don't have a tooth issue on top of the TN.
Avatar n tn i have been treated for tmj for 5 years with no relief and then i had an arthrocentesis done and still no relief. now my doc tells me i have trigeminal neuralgia and is going to give me an injection into that nerve. what i want to know is there side effects of this injection? and can trigeminal neuralgia cause pain in the back of the head where the skull meets the spine. i have had continuous pain there worse then ever. i am now on neurontin and baclofen and it helps extremely.
Avatar f tn I'm going to tell my story so it will be kind of long, but has a great end ing..promise;-). In 2011, at age 29, I noticed a sharp pain when I brushed my teeth. At the time, like many others, I assumed it was dental related. I went to the dentist and they found nothing wrong. As the weeks went on, the pain started happening when I talked, brushed, washed my face, clenched my teeth, slept, smiled, if the wind blew hard, etc. It was the WORST pain of my life.
Avatar n tn Just the other day I saw a neurologist and got Tegretol which is supposed to help the pain cuased by Trigeminal neuralgia which I have same symptoms for. BUT taking for 2 days 100mg per day didn't do anything. and yesterday I even felt some mild but still dull toothache one the other side of my face. My symptoms are generally get worst as the day goes by. and I have this constant tender point on end of my jaw line since the very beginning of the extraction.
Avatar n tn I have recently been diagnosed with atypical trigeminal neuralgia , I have severe crushing pain top and bottom of my right jaw pain into the cheek and across to my nose, ear ache and some neck pain. All the pain is in the right side and stops exactly in the middle of my face. (I dont get a headache with it . the attacks have lasted up to 12 hours with no reprieve until i got some tablets from my doctor.
