Carbamazepine (Tegretol) was first used to treat trigeminal neuralgia in the 1990s. Because of its success in treating that painful condition (which is very difficult to treat), it was then used to treat all kinds of neuropathic pain.
While it may be useful, there are more modern medications that may help if you have a neuropathic pain problem -- for instance, Neurontin (gabapentin) and Lyrica (pregabalin).
i have been treated for tmj for 5 years with no relief and then i had an arthrocentesis done and still no relief. now my doc tells me i have trigeminal neuralgia and is going to give me an injection into that nerve. what i want to know is there side effects of this injection? and can trigeminal neuralgia cause pain in the back of the head where the skull meets the spine. i have had continuous pain there worse then ever. i am now on neurontin and baclofen and it helps extremely.
I have a recent dx of Trigeminal Neuralgia from Primary Care and have been referred to Neurology for further evaluation. The pain distribution is unilateral and follows the sensory distribution of cranial nerve V at the maxillary area. History of previous trauma (neuroplasia) dates to 1997, though asymptomatic to current presentation. There is no prior history of TMJ, aneurysms, tumors or other common precipitants. I am 61 years old, consistent with typical onset.

Almost 2 years ago, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia along with trigeminal neuralgia. My doctor has given me Lyrica and Savella and it seems as though the medication was helping but, the medication does not help with the severe pain and the severe pain episodes that I am having.... The pain gets so unbearable that I just roll around and cry.... I have been do the emergency room so many times for the pain and not being able to sleep or lay down...
What I really meant was some medications such as tegretol, anticonvulsants,for example,neuron tin are very promising to treat trigeminal neuralgia. In addition, surgical procedure known as microvascular decompression is promising and yields long term therapeutic effect. you do need to see a neurologist to be fully informed of all available treatment options.

Hello all. My neuro has never actually said I have trigeminal neuralgia, he's treated my imaginary facial pain with various anti-seizure meds, recently I have used the diabetic med, lyrica, which works.
Question I have is, if bilateral trigeminal neuralgia is only common in ms, why can't THAT be a diagnostic aid, much like optic neuritis?
Should I have asked him to NAME my facial pain? To get him to admit something is up with me?
Your symptoms do not exactly match the clinical picture of trigeminal neuralgia but you should continue with the treatment and do notgo in for complicated details.The treatment consists of medicines, surgery, and complementary approaches.

This may be Trigeminal neuralgia as you have typical one sided facial pain extending to temple and eye( ophthalmic branch of trigeminal nerve may be involved) and sore gums of the teeth of same side (maxillary branch of 5th nerve). Trigeminal neuralgia may have a triggering factor like recent history of tooth extraction, touch, cold breeze or hot sensation etc. which you need to evaluate and avoid.
Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) rarely occurs with sinusitis but it has been described. The persistent congestion and your severe headache suggest that, despite the "clear" sinus x-rays you may have sinusitis or an infection of the sinus that has extended beyond the sinus walls.
That you are still ill suggests a possible infectious complication. You would do well to consult with an ENT specialist and have a CT scan of your sinuses and the adjacent areas.

It has a similar pain sensation as that of trigeminal neuralgia but in a different location. This type of neuralgia is rare and is usually one sided. The pain can be felt in the throat, tonsillar region, back of the tongue (not front), and even the ear and neck. The pain can be triggered by various activities such as laughing, chewing, coughing, speaking, etc.
The treatment is similar to that of trigeminal neuralgia. Medicines such as carbamazepine and phenytoin have had some success.
Sounds like Trigeminal Neuralgia Type 1 or Atypical. There is help for this! Same needs used for seizures help condition and pain attacks. Tegretol is one but many more. Thank you

Sorry to read about your pains. There's something you may want to look into called 'trigeminal neuralgia'. It is a neuropathic disorder characterized by episodes of intense pain in the face. Originating in one or both of the trigeminal nerves, this pain may be felt in any or all of the following: the ear, eye, lips, nose, scalp, forehead, left index finger, teeth, or jaw on one side and alongside of the face.
I have been suffering for 2-1/2 years with oral facial pain. It began on the left and is now bilateral. I get severe, constant pain in the upper gums, teeth, cheeks, temples, jaws, neck. At times there are sharp twinges, but mostly it is a deep, constant ache. I have had close to pain-free moments, but just when i think I'm cured, it flares up. I have had 2 diagnosis. TMJ with osteoarthritis of the jaw joints and cervical spine. The other diagnosis is from a neurologist.
At the start I was fine but I started to get a pain up and down the left side of my head with nystagmus and tachycardia which was diagnosed as trigeminal neuralgia. The neurologist also pointed out that I had a lesion in the pons area of my brainstem which I said must have been when I was drinking heavy. He discharged me and I thought nothing of it but gradually the pain has moved into the middle of my head as well as the left side and getting double vision off. Could this lesion be new?
I have Trigeminal Neuralgia. Within the last two months, I have been experiencing burning and pain in my right foot (including toes). I am taking oxcarbazepine, is this a side affect or does it mean I need to increase the dose.
After several different doctors, I was told that I had trigeminal neuralgia as well as a deviated septum. I eventually had laser surgery for the trigeminal neuralgia, but the a facial pain continues. The nerve pain has subsided, but I continue to have facial pain on my left side. The pain seems to get worse if I lean my head to that side. This occurred a few years ago, and after several months of taking seizure medication and lortab, I was not getting any better.
I was just diagnosed with Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia yesterday. I turn 40 on November 15th. The pain is unbelievable when it comes on, and unfortunately I have a very difficult time taking pain medications as they make me very ill & drowsy beyond belief. I have had 2 MRI's, a Fine Cut CT Scan, met with an Otolaryngologist and a Neurologist. We now know that I have this rare neuralgia condition.
