she is 29 and has been diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia. could her tn be from the meningitis? maybe a sid effect?? she is on very strong medication and can not have the dosage increased anymore. she suffers alot with extreme pain. thank you, i need to find out as much as i can about this disease.

Hi all, small question for you, i had no symptoms for 5 months, which was wonderful, and then i got this urinary infection , and the next thing i knew i had severe face pain, particularly in my nose, where it feels lie i have been bashed in the face with a pan, i have buzzing in my ears, and just a general tightness in my neck and shoulders,
i got my eyebrows tattooed also, could this have caused trigeminal neuralgia ? or would it have been the infection, ?

It does sound like it could be trigeminal neuralgia(sp)..There is a vast amount of info on the web about this and many of the forum members have gone through TN, myself included .. Its not fun
Are you see a neuro , has he/she prescribed anything for it. You could also have something else , like TMJ , you really need to have this looked at.

Almost 2 years ago, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia along with trigeminal neuralgia. My doctor has given me Lyrica and Savella and it seems as though the medication was helping but, the medication does not help with the severe pain and the severe pain episodes that I am having.... The pain gets so unbearable that I just roll around and cry.... I have been do the emergency room so many times for the pain and not being able to sleep or lay down...
I can understand what your going through with the Trigeminal Neuralgia, I myself was just in the ER about a month ago with a severe attack on my left side eye/cheek area. This has turned my TN into Bilateral Trigeminal Neuralgia due to a right sided attack in my cheek and jaw area about 2 years ago. I was ordered to see a Neurologist also and MRI's are being ordered. The TN on my left side has been coming and going ever since but minor and on occasion, Thank god!
It also seems worse when her stress level is higher
Here comes the part, I do not understand, she has no pressure points on her face that start the pain, also an ice pack, reduces the pain, when I understand cold is usually a trigger for atypical trigeminal neuralgia -- Since her pain most times starts mid afternoon and continures to build into the evening, some days she is in bed by 8pm -- all this seems opposite of the symptoms, I have seen for TN

Trigeminal neuralgia may have a triggering factor like recent history of tooth extraction, touch, cold breeze or hot sensation etc. which you need to evaluate and avoid.

I have been going to the doctor for several years for sinusitis, then I began to have facial pain. After several different doctors, I was told that I had trigeminal neuralgia as well as a deviated septum. I eventually had laser surgery for the trigeminal neuralgia, but the a facial pain continues. The nerve pain has subsided, but I continue to have facial pain on my left side. The pain seems to get worse if I lean my head to that side.

Drug of choice for trigeminal neuralgia is carbamazepine but as the dose may vary according to severity therefore I would advise an oral medicine specialist consultation or at least a physician to confirm this diagnosis and get you treated accordingly. One of the causes of Trigeminal Neuralgia could be tumors. The Trigeminal nerve and its branches touches many parts of the face including the sinuses. (Google Gray's Anatomy (bartleby.com) for good diagrams of where the Trigeminal Nerve is).
I personally have not heard that TN loosens teeth -- although pain in the teeth and gums (because of all the areas the nerve touches) is common.
Sounds like trigeminal neuralgia type 2 (which is the constant aching, burning, stabbing pain of somewhat lower intensity than type 1). The underlying cause of any type of neuralgia is damage to a nerve. Causes include shingles, syphilis, MS, Lyme Disease, vitamin B12 deficiency, pressure or injury to nerves due to a slipped discs or tumour to name a few.

In your case, I think that it can be trigeminal neuralgia. Trigeminal neuralgia is very painful swelling (inflammation) of the nerve (trigeminal nerve) that delivers feeling to the face and "surface" of the eye. Trigeminal neuralgia causes severe, short-lasting (only a few seconds) facial pain on the side of the affected nerve even by slight touch. Mostly affects elderly females. May be caused in multiple sclerosis also.

i have been treated for tmj for 5 years with no relief and then i had an arthrocentesis done and still no relief. now my doc tells me i have trigeminal neuralgia and is going to give me an injection into that nerve. what i want to know is there side effects of this injection? and can trigeminal neuralgia cause pain in the back of the head where the skull meets the spine. i have had continuous pain there worse then ever. i am now on neurontin and baclofen and it helps extremely.
