Trigeminal neuralgia is very painful swelling (inflammation) of the nerve (trigeminal nerve) that delivers feeling to the face and "surface" of the eye. Trigeminal neuralgia causes severe, short-lasting (only a few seconds) facial pain on the side of the affected nerve even by slight touch. Mostly affects elderly females. Hello all. My neuro has never actually said I have trigeminal neuralgia, he's treated my imaginary facial pain with various anti-seizure meds, recently I have used the diabetic med, lyrica, which works.
Question I have is, if bilateral trigeminal neuralgia is only common in ms, why can't THAT be a diagnostic aid, much like optic neuritis?

I‘ve been having very recent neurological symptoms and no diagnosis has been given yet despite several tests and dr appointments. Trigeminal neuralgia is a diagnosis being considered by my doctor but my head pain is mild and not excruciating like it's typically described. I also have slight limb weakness on my left side that began shortly after the temporal and head pain which from what I understand wouldn't be due to trigeminal neuralgia.

has suggested a diagnosis of Trigeminal Neuralgia. I am on a wide host of medications but not getting relief. I have had MRI, CT scan, etc... What do you suppose I do next. Does this sound like a likely diagnosis?
I have been suffering for 2-1/2 years with oral facial pain. It began on the left and is now bilateral. I get severe, constant pain in the upper gums, teeth, cheeks, temples, jaws, neck. At times there are sharp twinges, but mostly it is a deep, constant ache. I have had close to pain-free moments, but just when i think I'm cured, it flares up. I have had 2 diagnosis. TMJ with osteoarthritis of the jaw joints and cervical spine. The other diagnosis is from a neurologist.
Does Trigeminal Neuralgia worsen with age. I've tried Tegretol but the pain has some back agaiin after about a year and is very, very intense. It is like a needle made of glass penetrating the right side of my nose and going into my head. What is the best treatment for this and can it be cured completely.

Drug of choice for trigeminal neuralgia is carbamazepine but as the dose may vary according to severity therefore I would advice an oral medicine specialist consultation or at least a physician to confirm this diagnosis and get you treated accordingly. I was diagnosed a few months ago with trigeminal neuralgia and am wondering if anyone else has experienced symptoms like lazy eye and high heart rate? Am worried because I haven't seen anyone mention these symptoms on any other site.

For a few months my trigeminal nerve has been irritated. It's the first and second branch. I experience the electrical shock (more like a tickle) that I've experienced with Trigeminal Neuralgia but there's no pain. It seems to happen often when my head is tilted forward/down and that makes me wonder if it could be an issue with my cervical spine. I really don't have any unusual discomfort in my neck. I don't have headaches or sinus pressure or anything.
I have trigeminal & geniculate neuralgia & had microvascular decompression surgery 10/09 w/ a neurosurgeon & ENT MD. My surgery was abnormal, they were unable to decompress the 7th nerve due to massive amounts of extra &abnormal blood vessels wrapped around it. The 5th nerve wss decompressed &it controlled/allievated my trigeminal symptoms for 6 mo. I recommend finding an experienced surgeon & get MVD, this diagnosis is so painful even only 6 mo of remission was worth it.
My symptoms are not similar to everyone elses, but could it be trigeminal neuralgia? My pain in not actually in eye, just right on corner between eye and nose?
In general, trigeminal neuralgia is a clinical diagnosis consisting of shooting pain that lasts seconds to minutes. It usually occurs on one side of the face and can be triggered with stimuli such as a breeze, cold drinks, talking, facial expressions, and brushing teeth. It is uncommon to see an associated purple rash. Perhaps visiting her neurologist again may be a good next step.
