From your symptoms the possibilities of trigeminal neuralgia and temporal arteritis need to be ruled out. Trigeminal neuralgia is painful swelling (inflammation) of the nerve (trigeminal nerve) that delivers feeling to the face and "surface" of the eye. Trigeminal neuralgia causes severe, short-lasting (only a few seconds) facial pain on the side of the affected nerve even by slight touch. Mostly affects elderly females. May be caused in multiple sclerosis also.
So if you do not have TMJ, you might want to bring up Trigeminal Neuralgia to your physician and see what they say. I went through 4 doctors and dealt with the pain for over a year before I finally found a doctor who instantly knew what it was and started me on a medication to help the pain. I hope this helps you some.
I know someone who was recently diagnosed with TN and also has a lot of pain. It is a difficult condition.

No tylenol or ibuprofen was helping with her pain so the hospital told her it might be stress and gave her morphine. That did help with the pain but she couldn't function properly. She went to see her regular doctor today and the doctor diagnosed her with Neuralgia. Can Neuraligia come from nowhere and hit you like this or was it caused by the little bump on her head?

I would like to know if any one out there has TMJ like symptoms along the jaw area, along with their neuralgia. I have been told it is not trigeminal neuralgia, but the symptoms seem to be more like atypical trigeminal instead.. It is consistent, and very painful and the pain medications are making me so sick, I can't function.
I have trigeminal neuralgia and it is definitely caused by cell phones....my own opionion. I have tried numerous nutritional minerals and vitamins, nothing helps. I use a speaker phone now if I use the phone, which I dont' much anymore. I use epsom salts mixed in lemon water every 5 hours and the pain is under control. I used to have pain in eating, moving my face, washing my face, brushing my teeth, even talking or bending over.
Did you ever get a reply? Sounds like Trigeminal Neuralgia Type 1 or Atypical. There is help for this! Same needs used for seizures help condition and pain attacks. Tegretol is one but many more. Thank you

Traumatic trigeminal neuropathy is generally not associated with trigeminal neuralgia. However, both entities may be responsive to pharmacologic intervention. Seeing a neurologist or orofacial pain specialist misadvised.
Just the other day I saw a neurologist and got Tegretol which is supposed to help the pain cuased by Trigeminal neuralgia which I have same symptoms for. BUT taking for 2 days 100mg per day didn't do anything. and yesterday I even felt some mild but still dull toothache one the other side of my face. My symptoms are generally get worst as the day goes by. and I have this constant tender point on end of my jaw line since the very beginning of the extraction.

Back in 2003, I had brain surgery to remove a pinealoma and had a shunt placed less than a month later due to meningitis and hydrocephalus. My question is whether trigeminal neuralgia could be caused by scar tissue from the brain surgery. I understand that the trigeminal nerve begins at the base of the skull which is where my incision began for brain surgery. I have an appt. with a new neurologist on Nov.
This may be Trigeminal neuralgia as you have typical one sided facial pain extending to temple and eye( ophthalmic branch of trigeminal nerve may be involved) and sore gums of the teeth of same side (maxillary branch of 5th nerve). Trigeminal neuralgia may have a triggering factor like recent history of tooth extraction, touch, cold breeze or hot sensation etc. which you need to evaluate and avoid.

I am 26 years old and I had a maxillofacial surgery almost exactly 3 years ago during which metal plates and screws were drilled into my jawbones and cheek areas. I checked online and my surgeon has retired since so I have no idea how to contact him. I have never had a headache in my life. Then, out of the nowhere, for the past 10 days I have had non stop burning, agonizing headaches, numbness and burning in my face and around the back of my neck.
I have these symptoms and a diagnosis of RRMS. Bilateral trigeminal neuralgia is almost exclusive to MS. I have it as well to match my brainstem lesions.
As noted on one of my recent posts, dysautonomia can occur in MS with brainstem lesions so it may be tough to parse out the different symptoms to different diagnoses.
The bilateral trigeminal neuralgia points to MS. The rest of the symptoms I can't be so definite about. But I have done much research on the trigeminal neuralgia.

Drug of choice for trigeminal neuralgia is carbamazepine but as the dose may vary according to severity therefore I would advice an oral medicine specialist consultation or at least a physician to confirm this diagnosis and get you treated accordingly. The common causes of shooting pains on right side of head are trigeminal neuralgia, temporal arteritis, tension headaches etc.In trigeminal neuralgia there are successive bouts of face pain. This pain occurs when a blood vessel compresses the trigeminal nerve as it leaves the brain stem. Temporal arteritis is caused due to inflammation of medium and large sized arteries bringing blood to the head.
