"Here at Duke, we use mainly the low-carbohydrate, ketogenic diet to treat diabetes and obesity.
Avatar m tn Sorry about your son. There is a movie you might want to watch concerning epilepsy. The movie is "First Do No Harm". It is a true story concerning the use of the Ketogenic Diet with good results in treating epilepsy in children. Sure wish you the best with your son.

10094372 tn?1407761844 My diet is a 80/15/5 (fat/protein/carbs) ratio diet, and it works very well for me. My ketones are showing “green” in the mornings and “yellow” in the afternoon, using the Ketonix. When it shows “blue” it’s time to fast, exercise or have more fat! Now it is really easy to adjust the ketone level by just a simple exhale into the device. No disposable strips, no extra cost! The ketogenic diet hasn’t had any negative effects on blood pressure or markers.
Avatar f tn I agree with Sandman, and found this website on the possible side effects of the ketogenic diet. It is apparently not to be used in the long term, as it doesn't provide adequate nutrition for a growing child. Side effects include hyperactivity, irritability and constipation (which as Sandman noted can result in encopresis, involuntarily soiling). I'm also interested in your statement "she's just like me".
6990909 tn?1435275816 I suppose I naturally am doing the ketogenic diet and it does help. Avoiding glutton has made it where carbs are not a major part of my meals.
Avatar n tn Our son has recently been diagnosed with anaplastlastic astrocytoma grade3 in the thalamus part of the brain. He is 5 yrs. old. We are very scared and if there are any other people out there that can give us any suggestions or support we would be grateful.
Avatar f tn In general Low Glycemic foods help to keep blood sugar even and helps to prevent those highs and lows. The treatment for epilepsy is like keto in that it is low carb and limits carbs, but of the carbs allowed, they must be low glycemic and again ... must be done only through a trained doctor (blood work needs to be done frequently). 606432 tn?1221324814 According to "Seizures and Epilepsy in Childhood: A Guide" by Dr. John Freeman, et. al., after two nonfebrile seizures, there is a 72% chance of a 3rd, 58% chance of a 4th, and 29% chance of 10 or more further seizures. I highly reccommend this book - it is a great place to start when learning about seizures and epilepsy, and helped calm me down many a time.
1028452 tn?1537448484 I also use a lot of parsley when i am making chicken soup because you are boiling the water with the chicken, vegs and spices and then with the parsley being boiled in there too, you are getting the benefit of cleansing for kidneys. I think its good for liver too...
Avatar f tn He is on Epilim at the moment but not seizure free yet, although the seizures are much less. We are considering surgery. We are unsure of the successrate of this procedure and would like more information, for example, can the operation cause more brain damage, and can it alter his personality?
Avatar n tn May I suggest you do some research on the Ketogenic Diet. It is a huge lifestyle change, but is totally worth it. Ketogenic lifestyle requires that you cut out almost all carbs. You eat less than 20g of carbs a day, moderate amount of protein 50-100g/day (60-75 is ideal for most people), and 100-150g fat/day. It is a high fat diet that switches your body from using carbs for energy to using fat for energy.
Avatar m tn Your medical history, physical and neurological examination, and results of the previous tests done are important in the evaluation. Take care and regards.
Avatar f tn This diet is also called the LCHF (low carb high fat) diet (see the blog Diet Doctor for more info). I eat the LCHF diet and my cholesterol, LDL, HDL and triglycerides are all in optimal range, i'm losing weight and improving my insulin resistance. It's a diet that can help more than seizures. :) "After 4 weeks we weaned his Depokote and put him on Zonegram. That didn't help either. Nathan was started on a diet for Seizure control...Ketogenic Diet.
Avatar n tn My sister is having seizure like attacks, her whole upper body tenses and disfigures in painful stiffness, the last one reached her legs and feet, while the attack was in progress she also felt cold trickles down her cheeks. These seizures like attacks last an hour or more and she does not lose conscientious and can comprehend all that is happening to her. Neurosurgeon found a small tumor, 7mm between the brain lining and skull bone and assures her that this is not causing the attacks.
Avatar f tn We have to be knowledgeable about medicine in order to make the right decisions. And the decision always lies with us. We are the ones who sign and pay. Are there good, ethical doctors out there? Yes, and I have one. As for obstetricians I had to look long and hard to find one who was not knife happy. As it turned out he was German, not American. No surprise there. You are concerned about the lady who listed her question. So am I, or I would not have bothered replying.
Avatar f tn What I found as the most effective way to do this is via a ketogenic diet. There is a great book called the Art and Science of Nutritional Ketosis, by Dr Phinney and Dr Volek. There are a lot of free youtube videos by both doctors Phinney and Volek who describe how to lose fat, while protecting and building physical and athletic strength. Really good stuff. So, through proper nutrition, you can lose the fat and maintain/build muscle. Hope this helps. Good luck!!
Avatar f tn Now he usually shakes his head when he does it, or rubs his eyes or sticks a finger in his eyes when he does it as if his eyes are bothering him. It is very disturbing to see.

Avatar n tn Again, calories are not the main source of weight gain, folks. So often we all speak of the metabolism of the food we eat into sugar, but when people on here speak of weight suddenly it's all calories. The people who have been studied the longest in the gold standard studies eat a fairly high carbohydrate diet, a moderate amount of protein, and the better kinds of fats.
Avatar n tn Recently I was in the hospital for sepsis and cellulitis and we found as expected that my Type 2 was not under control. Three new meds for me later (hadn't been on meds in years) my fasting sugars were 70-100 and before meals were 85-100 and before bed was a bit higher at 120-170. The couple nights on higher end I got a VERY SMALL dose of insulin but it was only a couple times. Came home and so far in the first three days lowest sugar has been 112 but getting up to 146 before meals.
Avatar n tn She had 3 seizures yesterday which are getting longer and once were complex partial seizures but now we are seeing movement in her legs as well.I gave her rectal diazepam after the second seizure and noticed that her behaviour was good for the rest of the day.She is also on clonidine three times a day to help settle her down but i feel this is no longer working. We see our neurologist in three weeks but i feel she wont have any answers and we will just become undiagnosed.
559697 tn?1243286385 My granddaughter has Lennox Gastatut and we are going o try the "Ketogenic" diet next month. It can reduce seizures or even stop them completely in 50% of children. If it means even reducing her doses it would be very worth it. She takes Keppra and Topomax right now and the seizures have reduced by half maybe, so still about 50 absence seizures a day.
1663135 tn?1310005363 I do have a question for you. You said your son has the VNS how is that working. We are trying the diet before we do the surgery and I would like another mothers opinion before I have them cut my daughter open. And what exactly is an Endocrinologist. That is one word I havent heard. I am sorry to hear about your daughter. My daughter has a little brother and I worry about him as well. Statistics show siblings have a 15% higher chance of developing epilepsy. So I keep a close eye on him as well.
Avatar f tn These also can work well, and reduce blood sugars / requirements for medications. Please do educate yourself well on these. The current trend for ketogenic diet is limit carbs, adequate protein and enough healthy fats to make up energy requirements.
