Common Questions and Answers about Teriparatide forteo

forteo

Nicelady Medications themselves can be classified as antiresorptive or bone anabolic agents. Teriparatide (Forteo) is also approved for the treatment of postmenopausal women who have severe osteoporosis and are considered at high risk for fractures. The medicine is given through daily shots underneath the skin and you can give these shots even at home. Another advantage is that it can be given in patients who cannot tolerate oral biphosphonate drugs.
Avatar m tn 1) Should oral Bisphosphanates be preferred over intravenous ? 2) Will Bisphosphonates be sufficient in this case, or are Teriparatides needed ? Teriparatide injections in India are quite expensive and monthly treatments for a year will double her monthly spending. 3) A second opinion was taken from a family doctor and he suggested taking Teriparatide injections alone. Does that not seem wrong - since parathyriod hormone will also increase resorption if calcium is deficient in the body ?
Avatar f tn I have been on Forteo daily injections for 1 year and I have experienced considerable joint pains which did not exist prior to treatment. My left hip and knee, my right knee and my hands have been getting worse each month. Has anyone else experienced similar reactions?
Avatar f tn My doctor told me that I have Osteoporosis and wants me to try Forteo an injection for two years. Has anyone tried this drug and what were your side effects, if any. I don't want to make my stomach problems worse than there already are.
Avatar f tn I have severe osteoporosis and am trying to take Forteo. I started out with half dose and have worked up to a full dose. The full dose 2 days in a row was disabling. My doctor suggested every other day. So I let the previous trial work its way out of my system for 5 days and tried another full dose. This is three days after the dose and I am weaker each day. I move in slow motion. My doctor is puzzled. Anyone had a similar experience?
Avatar f tn Just was informed that I have osteoporosis. My doctor wants me to use Forteo, an injection that you use for two years.
908504 tn?1269103899 He also wanted me to try the injections of Forteo but my Aunt had bone cancer in her hips so I am somewhat leary of that drug. Any info will be greatly appreciated as I am in really bad pain.
Avatar f tn Hi-- When you say Medicare, I assume it is Medicare Part D, administered by an insurance company like Blue Cross, etc? If so, you might be in for sticker shock. I had a similar experience w/ Forteo, via Part D, they wanted $5K for 3 months. I went directly to Lilly, and qualified for pro bono meds for 2 years, the limit of tx on Forteo. My understanding is patients with cirrhosis get priority. Other Gilead experienced persons, and there are a few here, can tell you more.
Avatar m tn Thanks for your feedback. My case has baffled most doctors. I drink alot of water, eat a healthy diet and don't smoke or drink. The only meds I take are for my bones (Forteo) as I found out that I had extreme osteoporosis in Nov. 2008. I have had my circualtion checked several times and it is reduced in my "weaker" foot. There is no blockages and I have no rare diseases.... My problem is only becoming worse and noone knows why....
Avatar n tn I am in the process of many test now and the only abnormalty found so far is an elevated level of calcium in my blood, a result of Forteo injections. My blood pressure is perfect! Can you give me any idea what is happening to me and if there is anything I can do to help myself this mystery is solved?
Avatar n tn He scheduled a CT for confirmation. The CT confirmed the non-union. He wrote a prescription for Forteo, and the use of a bone growth stimulator, stating that if, after an additional 8 weeks there is still no sign of bone fusion, he would do a bone graft and replace the hardware. I feel as though he is not listening to my complaints of pain, edema and the inability to sleep secondary to the pain and discomfort.
Avatar n tn I do not/have not ever taken estrogen replacement. I did have Aredia/Forteo injections for the treatment of the osteoporosis. The lump/mass is my breast was found to be "prominent glandular" tissue....no sign of mass/calcification...the "lump" under my arm and in my right groin come and go. My ribs under my arm (upper part) of my ribcage is very tender.
Avatar f tn In fact, everything was normal except for his neurological problems. So they sent him home and told him to try Forteo. Well, Forteo has a side effect which is increased risk of bone cancer, so he stopped it. And I put him on Strontium, which is a supplement that builds bone density. Strontium is used in Europe and a pharmaceutical company has a patent on Strontium Ranelate, which is Strontium with an artificial substance linked to it.
Avatar f tn For almost 2 years, I have been, and continue to be, treated for Fibro, Osteoarthritis, Senile Osteoporosis (daily injection of Forteo), high blood pressure and low/none vitamin D, and periods of low white cells. Was checked for the usual, RA, Lupus etc. Nothing showed up. Previous health-worked fulltime around 50 hours a week or more, constantly going and doing, did many family dinners, active runner, won divisional 5k first place and masters and weight trained. BMI is around 20.
Avatar m tn if anyone has osteonecrosis in the future Teriparatide has shown case reports of disease reversal.
Avatar f tn I was on a two year course of Forteo (Parathyroid hormone) and after I quit taking the Forteo, I began losing weight with a decreased appetite for a total of 45 lbs. Had also stopped taking Lexapro in reducing doses prior to all this because it seemed to stop working. I was taking it because of the mood swing side effect of the Prednisone and to help with my fibromyalgia (which is quiet, now). Even though it was weaned, I developed withdrawal symptoms of big mood swings.
Avatar f tn Hello, The people who make the best bone mineral density building drug out there, Lilly, are pretty generous with financial help for Forteo treatments. If you have a long talk with your MD, make sure what your deviation in the Ward's scores are in specific areas. I would not be surprised if some localized areas are fully osteoporitic. Same situation happened to me, the overall Dx was osteopenia, but their were localized spots where the numbers were in the osteoporosis range.
Avatar f tn My mother has Osteoporosis and I am worried about her as she is not on anything for it except 1000 iu per day Vitamin D and she is almost 75 yrs old. They wanted to put her on a med called Forteo where she has to give herself an injection once per day every day for 2 yrs to grow new bone. I have read up on it and it says it caused bone cancer in mice so we have not put her on it yet.
980382 tn?1251481588 I have the added problem of severe osteoporosis, but am about to finish my second year on forteo. I also have panic disorder which precedes (since childhood) either of the other two but feeds into them, especially the emphysema, big time. It's also the one I've had the least amount of success in controlling. Tried just about,in fact, everything. I still like to walk around my woods and did extremely well at a funeral last night.
Avatar f tn t mind injecting myself, because I did it for two years on Forteo, but my husband knocked the syringe out of my hand before I was finished. Unfortunately, at 5'2, 71#s, I don't really have any fatty areas. (: I'm back to the Auto-ject, but after only 4 weeks, I am covered with itchy bumps. I use Benadryl cream, (extra strength) on them, but it doesn't stop them from itching. I don't think my MS Specialist will keep me on this medication when she sees me in February.
901131 tn?1293744553 Another interesting item was that I was doing injections in my abdomen primarily before the 12 week test, then I switched to my legs were I had less body fat, also I had done forteo injections for 2 years in my abdomen.
1394098 tn?1385960134 I am so tired of being tired all the time. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis as well as Fibrmyalga . I have Chronic Pain issues. Go to bed at 10:00 up by one or two might go back to sleep around 7:00 and sleep for a couple of more hours. That is how my day goes up and down all day. I have been told not to drive because I tend to nod out here and there. It is kind of scary. I am not sure if I should go to my Primary or my Rumatologist.
