Spiriva mechanism of action

Common Questions and Answers about Spiriva mechanism of action

spiriva

Avatar f tn Spiriva® HandiHaler® (tiotropium bromide inhalation powder) has a maximum duration of action of about 36 hours. To be safe, you would want to be off the medicine for 48 to 72 hours before the spirometry. It would have been preferable, but not mandatory to do the pulmonary function tests (PFTs) at the time the diagnosis of chronic lung disease was made especially if the diagnosis was unequivocal. The other important question would be, “Why 3 CT scans, presumably of your lungs, in 16 months?
Avatar m tn I am not physically restricted - I walk 1 mile or more day and do 10 minutes of other light exercises most days. My BP runs under 120/80 most of the time. I understand carvedilol helps prevent stiffening of the heart muscle and can help restore LV function to some degree. How specially, so it do this? What is the biochemical mechanism?
Avatar f tn At my six-monthly checkup at my local hospital here in Spain there was a replacement doctor and since he was young I thought he might be willing to hear why I was not taking spiriva and steroids. He confirmed that a person with severe COPD MUST use these medicines. But - I objected - they do not cure, they’re only supposed to make you feel a little better and have nasty adverse effects.
Avatar n tn None of the existed before Spiriva!!!! I found out that if you are on Spiriva 2 years - 5 years your chances of getting prostate cancer is 50%. If you are over 60 (I am 62) the chances are 90%.
Avatar m tn The mechanism of action of Campral® (acamprosate calcium) Delayed-Release Tablets in maintenance of alcohol abstinence is not completely understood. Originally, several neurotransmitter systems, including GABA, were investigated for a possible role in Campral's mechanism of action. However, recent evidence suggests Campral's main interaction is with the glutamate system. Chronic alcohol exposure is hypothesized to alter the normal balance between neuronal excitation and inhibition.

Avatar n tn Steroids cause osteoporosis, cataracts, and wreck your immune system. I am thinking of adding Spiriva inasmuch as Mucomyst has solved the mucus problem.
Avatar n tn Because of serious side effects I quit the use of inhaled steroids two years ago. (I am at the lower edge of stage II COPD). I substituted natural anti-inflammatories and my breathing is better for it. What had been serious bronchitis abated. I continued to use DuoNeb and Zyrtec. But the real improvement was when a respiratory therapist suggested I take nebulized Mucomyst (acetylcisteine). I have not coughed one single time since I started using it and my FEV1 has improved 20 per cent.
Avatar m tn Oyakawa I am in my 3rd year of medical school and I was wondering the mechanism of action of steroid injections in the eyelid causing cataracts. It is not an osmotic agent so why does that occur? thanks so much.
Avatar n tn If you are taking Duoneb there is no point in taking Spiriva because Spiriva is related to the ipratropium that is a consitituant of Duoneb. Also Spiriva is extremely drying which may be why you are feeling so uncomfortable. To be using Duoneb five or six times a day you would have to be close to death. Obviously you aren't, so you can cut back without any problem. I have serious COPD and my use of Duoneb averages 3.5 vials daily. The big question is - how bad is your COPD?

Avatar f tn The main side effects of Neurontin® (gabapentin) are dizziness and sleepiness. It could be the cause of your feeling tired. You should inform the doctor who prescribed the Neurontin® (gabapentin) of your new symptoms. He/she may want to have you temporarily discontinue the medicine to see if your symptoms subside. Significant chest or respiratory symptoms are not reported as an adverse effect of this medicine.
Avatar n tn I have wet macular degeneration as well as COPD and my ophthamalogist theorizes that the weird "blisters" that are appearing at the site of the oozing veins may be caused by the steroid content of my asthma medication ( namely Spiriva). So he has asked me to change to something that doesn't contain any steroids. My pulmonologist has suggested I add floridil to my albuterol nebulizer.
Avatar f tn Spiriva is an anticholenergic used to treat various forms of COPD, but rarely asthma. The primary function of these medications is to reduce mucous in the respiratory system. They do have a mild broncho-dilating affect. I have not used Spiriva so I am unsure of its dosage, but I have taken ipratropium which is in the same class. As a neb solution it lasts 6 hours and as an MDI it last 4 hours. Check your prescription for dosing on this medication.
Avatar f tn Evaluation would include plain X-rays of your spine. After this and a good physical exam for evidence of nerve compression, additional studies such as an MRI might be indicated but this is testing that your doctor would have to believe might be helpful in diagnosing the cause of the “shocks.
Avatar f tn Plavix has a unique mechanism of action by blocking the amplification of platelet activation by released ADP, and often used with aspirin to prevent the risk of clots for the first year after DES implant. Plavix and aspirin have different mechanism of action to prevent clots. After a year, plavix is usually discontinue as the risk for clots is decreased, and aspirin is continued long term. The risk of a clot is about 3%.
Avatar f tn Unfortunately, some individuals develop allergy to the ipritropium in the Duo-neb or to Spiriva and the drug simply irritates the membranes of the mouth allowing the thrush to take hold. That you also develop candidiasis under your breasts suggests that you might, for some reason be predisposed to this infectious agent. One possible approach would be to use some type of Spacer device, to be placed between your inhalers and your mouth. Wish I could be more helpful.
Avatar m tn Spiriva is extremely drying and it will make for thick mucus that is hard to cough up. Advair is also drying and I note that your extremely high dose of that inhaled steroid is not generally recommended. I got rid of Spiriva because it was drying. It didn't help anyway. I got rid of Advair because I developed adrenal fatigue, osteoporosis, and it gave me a hacking cough which exhausted me and could not have been good for my lungs.
Avatar f tn I have moerate COPD. As to Spiriva, I used it briefly and it turned my lungs to glue. If any of you have thick sputum that is hard to expel (caused by all those drying medications), vitamin B5 is an outstanding mucolytic (mucus thinner). I take 1000 mg. daily. It is also specific for adrenal fatigue.
Avatar f tn I read that roflumilast is a new drug that controls the inflammation that causes copd to get more severe. I currently use Spiriva and this article said that there was a higher rate of sudden death with the mist inhalers in people with vascular disease. So I am thinking about switching up after talking it over with my doctor.roflumilast is a pill you take daily. So I guess your answer would be anti-inflammatory.
Avatar n tn on these meds, I had the sickest winter of my life. Pneumonia, bronchitis and 3 months of painful pleurisy. I instantly stopped the Advair. Then, I stopped the Spiriva. And for almost 2 yrs. now, I am doing better without these meds, then when I was taking them. I don't suggest this stopping of meds for everyone. But, personally these meds made me much worse. I agree on the natural supplement approach. I do take a rescue inhaler. But, only when I have to. Just my experience and input.

Avatar n tn It can be used occasionally, for transient worsening of COPD with Advair, and more regularly with Spiriva. If you find that you have a need for Proventil more than once a day, you should report that to your doctor who may then opt to increase your long acting medication.
Avatar f tn Potassium is a chemical element and it is part of the electrolyte that should be in balance with other lytes to adequately conduct an electrical impulse that originates with the sinus node in the right atrium. The mechanism of action is not completely understood, but what is when a voltage (unit of potential for conduction) and electrolyte there will conduction and passage of electrical impluses.
Avatar n tn does spiriva or alvesco cause acid reflux? This discussion is related to <a href='http://www.medhelp.org/posts/show/284791'>Asthmatic bronchitis, how long does it usually last? Could I have something else?</a>.
Avatar m tn You might want to read up on the side effects of Advair. There has been a movement away from the use of inhaled steroids. I stopped using Advair almost four years ago.after developing serious side effects. My condition actually improved when I got off it. You might be interested to know that inhaled steroids do not reduce mortality. I tried Spiriva but found it very drying and had to stop using it.
