I was diagnosed in Oct. 07 with moderate COPD. Was put on Advair, Spiriva and ProAir as my rescue inhaler. After being on the Advair and Spiriva for several months, I began to become ill. Spent the sickest winter of my life, while on these inhalers. Bronchitis, pneumonia and pleurisy that was so painful for 3 months. I was doing okay before the inhalers. At least not sick all the time. Then, I went off the inhalers. Personally, I said heck with them.
Because of serious side effects I quit the use of inhaled steroids two years ago. (I am at the lower edge of stage II COPD). I substituted natural anti-inflammatories and my breathing is better for it. What had been serious bronchitis abated. I continued to use DuoNeb and Zyrtec. But the real improvement was when a respiratory therapist suggested I take nebulized Mucomyst (acetylcisteine). I have not coughed one single time since I started using it and my FEV1 has improved 20 per cent.
A note about your phlegm problems. From using the emphysema medications one can develop thrush (a fungal infection). This no doubt extends to the lungs. Antibiotics and prednisone are marvelous food for fungi. They love it. So what do you do to help yourself....
Mucomyst is back on the market. That will dissolve the phlegm and has a neutral ph, unlike stuff like Spiriva which is acid. (Fungi thrive in an acid environment.) Also you might want to take a potassium iodide supplement.
of vitamin B5, plus mullein extract, and MSM daily. B5 will also counteract the drying quality of albuterol. There are absolutely no side effects. I got off Advair because of very serious side effects which actually made my breathing worse. Symbicort is probably just as bad. They are steroids that throw your adrenals out of whack. Because of Advair I suffered serious adrenal fatigue which I am being treated for. Stick to natural whenever you can.
I have wet macular degeneration as well as COPD and my ophthamalogist theorizes that the weird "blisters" that are appearing at the site of the oozing veins may be caused by the steroid content of my asthma medication ( namely Spiriva). So he has asked me to change to something that doesn't contain any steroids. My pulmonologist has suggested I add floridil to my albuterol nebulizer.
Severent (salmeterol) can have very serious side effects, death being the most notable. Flovent is a corticosteroid. Read the FDA warnings of February 2010.
Like you I have moderately severe COPD. I use Duoneb (similar to combivent) in a nebulizer and find it very helpful. I discontinued the use of Advair (which is basically a combination of Serevent and Flovent) because it almost killed me (choking). It also caused adrenal fatigue, was harming my eyes, and was subverting my immune system.
I have been using albuterol inhalers for 18 years now, since being diagnosed with asthma. Since they changed the inhalers recently to no CFC's (yes, I care about the environment, but...) can they come up with a decent inhaler that doesn't clog up at the tip? I have to take out the cannister of my Proventil and put it in the holder for another inhaler. Makes me mad since I do not have insurance and it is a $54 inhaler.

i went wks and wks on inhalers after inhaler, prednazone , which in fact i needed antibiotics . how i found out is i went to the E.R. and they told me , then i scheduled myself an apt with a pulmonary doc. and he said he didnt see any indacation of asthma or copd ! I would get a second opinion if i were you !
Thank you both so much for your response. I don't think I can use a spacer with the spiriva inhaler but I will try buying new toothbrushes. I always forget about that!!
I stopped using Advair almost four years ago.after developing serious side effects. My condition actually improved when I got off it. You might be interested to know that inhaled steroids do not reduce mortality. I tried Spiriva but found it very drying and had to stop using it. As of now the only prescribed medicines I use are nebulized Duoneb or albuterol and nebulized Mucomyst (for congestion). Additionally I take natural anti-inflammatories.
If you are taking Duoneb there is no point in taking Spiriva because Spiriva is related to the ipratropium that is a consitituant of Duoneb. Also Spiriva is extremely drying which may be why you are feeling so uncomfortable.
To be using Duoneb five or six times a day you would have to be close to death. Obviously you aren't, so you can cut back without any problem. I have serious COPD and my use of Duoneb averages 3.5 vials daily.
The big question is - how bad is your COPD?
I was recently diagnosed with early copd. Since I do not have health insurance, i go to a clinic. The physician's assistant has prescribed singular for my copd, I don't feel that it is helping me very much. I mostly have shortness of breath & coughing in the evening. This disease frightens me because I don't feel I am getting the right medical advice. I asked about simbicor & spiriva and was told that those meds are for later stages of copd.
My lungs are great. I had a V6 test and the radiaation is very accurate. I take Spiriva once a day and Advair twice a day. Then I take breatihing treatments three times a day. And I have an inhaler. I still wheez like crazy at different times of the day. Help!

The test revealed that I either had very bad asthma or very mild emphysema. My regular doctor gave me Spiriva inhaler to use as a trial. That seemed to stop the cough. I was immediately referred to a pulomonary specialist who put me on Advair 250/50 twice a day. This inhalation treatment has stopped my chronic cough.
My husband and I were putting on one of those window kits to keep out the cold air out and I became very tired and my arms and legs felt like they were burning. I use 2 inhalers a day, Spiriva and Advair Diskus 250/50 and use Albuterol inhaler as needed. I am 70 years old. I have never been real athetlic but I find I am getting weaker all the time.
He is prescribed 16 hrs oxygen daily (we have machine)but only uses this when he feels he needs it (some days as little as 3 hours). He daily takes spiriva, symbicort and sabutamol inhalers and calcichew tablets also mucodyne capsules occassionally. These are prescribed by his doctor. He also takes Nytol (over the counter) herbal sleep tablets quite often. For the past 18months he has suffered from a tingling, burning feeling in his skin.
