Spriva which is the same type drug as Advair I believe. What Spiriva is a a capsule that you place in the device for delivery of the medicine. You place the capsule in a hole inside then when you close the top and press a button a little nail shaped metal piece stabs a hole in the capsule. You blow all of your breath out slowly then suck in slowly while it delivers a little at a time to your lungs.
i have copd and found spiriva wasnt working for me, after several attempts at trying different things i was put on seretide 4 times a day along with ventolin and spiriva and this settled things down nicely. Go back to doctors and have a word with him/her and advise the spiriva is not working, they will try something else for him, good luck.
I was recently diagnosed with early copd. Since I do not have health insurance, i go to a clinic. The physician's assistant has prescribed singular for my copd, I don't feel that it is helping me very much. I mostly have shortness of breath & coughing in the evening. This disease frightens me because I don't feel I am getting the right medical advice. I asked about simbicor & spiriva and was told that those meds are for later stages of copd.
If you are taking Duoneb there is no point in taking Spiriva because Spiriva is related to the ipratropium that is a consitituant of Duoneb. Also Spiriva is extremely drying which may be why you are feeling so uncomfortable.
To be using Duoneb five or six times a day you would have to be close to death. Obviously you aren't, so you can cut back without any problem. I have serious COPD and my use of Duoneb averages 3.5 vials daily.

Spiriva (titropium) is a inhaled antihistamine indicated for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) including emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Antihistamines frequently cause dry mouth and dry sinuses (benadryl is an antihistamine). The side effect is not considered serious, but you should call your physician if it continues. A saline nasal spray can moisturize the sinuses and possibly reduce the symptoms.
after checking, this bladder problem is a side effect of Spiriva...I had used Spiriva for over a year and the infections/non-infections got more frequent until I had to go to the urologist...I was on Azo Standard most of the time. I alerted my pulmonologist as to my problem and he took me off the Spiriva. Since being off the Spiriva, my breathing has gotten worse....my Dr said there was no replacement for Spiriva...I'm writing to find out what others might know.
I currently take advair and Spiriva medication.. is this the one and only mediacation,since there are no genericand here in the united states unlike the rest of the world which has a free market, we are controlled by the drug industry.
Thanks for the input. My MD put me on Spiriva, and during the summer I experienced what felt like about 2/3 lung capacity. Symptoms improved when I went to the coast to get some "clean" air. When I got back to the valley I had a lung function test conducted, and the MD said Spiriva was not medically indicated. So now I'm not sure if I actually have COPD or not. Will take your advice and get a second opinion.
I had been hospitalized for 3 years in a row all in the same month march, for shortness of breath. They thought it was asthma. The last time which was this year, they hospitalized me for a week. Which they ran lots of test and determined I have COPD. The symptoms I had were shortness of breath, tired, and coughing. Oxygen doesn't seem to help, medication wasn’t helping too (Spiriva and Advair plus nose sprays).
I was diagnosed with moderate COPD in Oct. 07. I too was put on Spiriva and Advair. About 3 mths. on these meds, I had the sickest winter of my life. Pneumonia, bronchitis and 3 months of painful pleurisy. I instantly stopped the Advair. Then, I stopped the Spiriva. And for almost 2 yrs. now, I am doing better without these meds, then when I was taking them. I don't suggest this stopping of meds for everyone. But, personally these meds made me much worse.
COPD Fev 45-50% , have been on Flovent,/Spiriva/ Proair 10 years and am sensitive to medications. I dont smoke.
Have had increasingly reactive airways for 3 years, had first Dxed exacerbation last fall triggered by woodsmoke. No congestion and did not take antibiotics. Pulmo said airways 'sounded just like asthma' but do not have that Dx. Airways felt raspy, swollen, inflamed. Have slowly recovered on a higher dose of Flovent.
I started Spiriva 2 years ago. I had mild COPD. I also had no prostate problems prior nor did I have a family history of Prostate cancer.Towards the end of last year I was diagnosed with stage 3 prostate cancer, gleason 10. My psa was 18.1. I have since had the DiVinci surgery (which I fully recommend) and I am not undergoing radiation. None of the existed before Spiriva!!!! I found out that if you are on Spiriva 2 years - 5 years your chances of getting prostate cancer is 50%.
So, since March 08 I have been winging it attempting to manage my COPD, without the benefit of health insurance. Personally I totally agree with allmymarbles. For 6 mths. after diagnosis, I did have insurance. So, I was prescribed Advair, Spiriva and ProAir. While having insurance, I did get a second opinion on the COPD by a pulmonary doctor as well. But, between my family doctor and the pulmonary doctor, I was prescribed these meds for my COPD.
I am 56 year old woman who was diagnoised with COPD 10 years ago. I am not taking any oral steroids at this time. I use Duo Neb Inhalation 2 times per day and oxygen on 2 L continously. The Pulmonary Doctor keeps having me try to use Advair but I get thrush in my mouth anytime I'm on Advair or oral steroids. So I try to avoid them if at all possible. I am currently using Spiriva HandiHaler which I believe is not suppose to have any steroids but I keep getting Thrush in my mouth !
At my six-monthly checkup at my local hospital here in Spain there was a replacement doctor and since he was young I thought he might be willing to hear why I was not taking spiriva and steroids. He confirmed that a person with severe COPD MUST use these medicines. But - I objected - they do not cure, they’re only supposed to make you feel a little better and have nasty adverse effects.
I was diagnosed with copd 5 years ago,,had pulm,,test,,,,,recently , had another lung function test,,,the doctor showed me the lsit with all the numbers ,he said a gp would look and see nothing,,but he pointed out 1 number was 176 he said that shoud be below 100,,that number shows mild to moderate emphysema,,but said he could not tell me my lung capcity,it that number bad???
The diagnosis of COPD actually covers two different diseases, emphysema and/or chronic bronchitis. I don't know of any homeopathic treatments for emphysema, but there are herbal treatments for overall respiratory function that may help.
I am taking Flovent, Spiriva and ProAir. Since I've been on the medication I've been Dxed with idiopathic neuropathy, cervical radiculopathy, carpel tunnel. I also have other entrapment symptoms, ulnar ,and I think in my legs as well.
Sometimes I get a burst of nerve pain in my arms and legs a few minutes after using the Flovent and it also causes some tendon swelling. I've shown over and over that I have less pain on lower doses of meds.
I use Albuterol, SPIRIVA and ADVAIR to control Asthma & COPD. I also take CRESTOR for cholesterol and ADVIL for arthritis.
In the last month (after starting SPIRIVA), when I first wake up in the morning, my eyes "roll" from right to left in an arcing motion when I attempt to focus on something. After a few attempts to focus on an object (the clock on the clock radio), the movement stops and I'm fine.
Any thoughts?
t know if this is pertinent, but Advair caused such extreme coughing (almost incapacitating bronchitis) that I stopped using it. As for Spiriva, I find it extremely drying. I only use it every fourth day. On that regimen it helps. My lung health is actually much better and I am more comfortable since I gave up Advair, and my coughing is moderate. Advair also caused me to develop adrenal fatigue, which was quite dreadful, and I am still recovering from it.
