Avatar n tn I have emphysema. i use advair twice a day and spiriva one a day. The biggest problem for me is that I always seem to havemucus build up in the mornings. My doctor has told me to try mucinex, but that doesn't seem to work all the time. So i try using albuterol in the morning to help loosen up the mucus so that I can breath better.
Avatar n tn My questions are, How serious is this side effect, Should I continue using the Spiriva, Continue the Spiriva but stop the Symbicort, or Drop both and just take Combivent which I currently use as my emergency inhaler? Are there other alternative that I and my doc should consider.
Avatar m tn I have suffered moderate emphysema for the past several years. Just after Christmas 2009 I began feeling bloated. It got to the point where it seemed like the emphysema was getting worse. On Jan 22 I made appointment with respiratory physician who treats my emphysema. On the way to the office, thank heaven my wife was driving, I could not breathe. Made it to Dr's. office who ordered an ambulance and forwarded me to the ICU at local hospital.

Avatar n tn This would include a long-acting bronchodilator, such as Serevent® Inhalation Aerosol (salmeterol xinafoate), Foradil® Aerolizer™ (formoterol fumarate inhalation powder) or Spiriva® HandiHaler® (tiotropium bromide inhalation powder) along with an inhaled steroid. Another potentially helpful, oral medicine is called theophylline. Your doctor may also want to prescribe this. You should have your blood oxygen level checked, in case it is low and you would need supplemental oxygen.
Avatar m tn coughing phlegm from lungs for the past six months, have taken antibiotics with no results, did take predrisone together with SPIRIVA 18 mcg and ADVAIR 500/50 for the past month. Still coughing up phlegm and have limited lung capacity. Any suggestions comments.
Avatar f tn For 6 mths. after diagnosis, I did have insurance. So, I was prescribed Advair, Spiriva and ProAir. While having insurance, I did get a second opinion on the COPD by a pulmonary doctor as well. But, between my family doctor and the pulmonary doctor, I was prescribed these meds for my COPD. Three months after being on all these meds, I spent the sickest winter of my life. Pneumonia, bronchitis and pleurisy. I had never had pneumonia in my life. And the pleurisy lasted 3 long painful months.
Avatar f tn My husband who is 66 years of age has emphysema for 5 years now. He is prescribed 16 hrs oxygen daily (we have machine)but only uses this when he feels he needs it (some days as little as 3 hours). He daily takes spiriva, symbicort and sabutamol inhalers and calcichew tablets also mucodyne capsules occassionally. These are prescribed by his doctor. He also takes Nytol (over the counter) herbal sleep tablets quite often.
Avatar m tn I am a 40 yr old male // smoked for 22 yrs and have recently been diagnosed with emphysema apparently stage 4 because I have already been put on O2 // currently taking advair twice a day and spiriva once a day.
Avatar f tn I suffer from COPD/Emphysema as diagnosed 18 months ago after mentioning my ever increasing shortness of breath on very short exertion. I am not far past 60 years. I commenced smoking in my mid 20's. My GP - local MBBS as they are known in Australia resisted prescribing the inhaler and two puffers until I ceased smoking. That has occurred now finally. He will NOT give me O2 (Oxygen treatment) and further stated there was not a chance for a lung transplant, even one lobe.
Avatar n tn The test revealed that I either had very bad asthma or very mild emphysema. My regular doctor gave me Spiriva inhaler to use as a trial. That seemed to stop the cough. I was immediately referred to a pulomonary specialist who put me on Advair 250/50 twice a day. This inhalation treatment has stopped my chronic cough.
Avatar f tn Why were you hospitalized and what treatments did they give you there?
Avatar f tn (2) Participants in the emphysema study group are not on any medication. Anyone with emphysema, who knows he has emphysema and has disturbing symptoms, in on some sort of medication. It is not indicated whether the participants have actually been been diagnosed with emphysema by competent doctors. (3) The "20 data points" are not identified. It is not known if the improvements are anecdotal or confirmed by tests.
Avatar n tn What does the family expect to happen at the end with a loved one who has emphysema. Can't breathe and affixiates? Heart attack? Usually complications to pneumonia? We want to be prepared and know what's ahead for us and our Mother. We know everyone is different, so what is the USUAL cause of death?
161647 tn?1280608163 Just saw this post and want to tell you that my mother was diagnosed exactly the same " a touch of emphysema" about 5 years ago. Doc said at that stage it should not progress as long as she stops smoking. I of course tend to freak out whenever something goes wrong with mom so did days upon days of research and most of the medical field says as long as you immediately stop smoking and stay healthy (diet, excercise) it should stop the progression.
Avatar n tn Was Dx w/EMPHYSEMA 7 yrs ago. I'm a chain smoker. Dr stated I would die if i Didn't quit. How long do you think I have to live.
Avatar f tn Lung emphysema and calcified retinal arteries may again be from connective tissue disorder, but they are surely aggravated by smoking. Having emphysema to extent you need Spiriva at 41 means that smoking is, please, extremely harmful for you. Calcification - atherosclerosis could be also in intestinal arteries, causing lowerd intestinal absorption. BREATH TEST can reveal bacterial overgrowth in small intestine (and H.
Avatar m tn Breathing is difficult with or without plants for people who have a lung disease like emphysema. Unfortunately there is no cure for emphysema, only inhalers and oxygen to make things more comfortable. Although plants produce oxygen in day light hours, once it gets dark, plants take in oxygen and put out carbon dioxide. Broad leafed plants and Chlorophytum (also known as spider plant) are best to purify the air but would need to be removed from the room at night time.
Avatar f tn Moderate emphysema is COPD. Did your doctor just tell you that you had the emphysema? Or did the doctor run tests to prove the diagnosis of COPD? Whether this doctor just told you that you had the emphysema or if the doctor ran tests, makes all the difference in the world. I had a lung xray and a breathing test called a spirometry. The lung damage showed up on my lung xray and the spirometry proved that I had COPD as well. My family doctor ran these tests. I though wanted a second opinion.
Avatar m tn This would be consistent with a diagnosis of COPD (Emphysema). The results are probably due to the past history of smoking. I would speak with your physician about the test results and see what medications are appropriate for you to help you with this obstruction. It is not uncommon for people to experience more breathing difficulties even after not smoking for 10 years, if they have a long history of smoking in the past. The damage occurred years ago, but has not become apparent.
Avatar f tn Several stone overweight. Recently been diagnosed with emphysema. Had recent heart echo - no abnormalities found My symptoms from the head down. All have only appeared since stopping smoking 2.5 years ago Stupidly greasy hair, dont even get 24 hours before its greasy again.
Avatar n tn None of the existed before Spiriva!!!! I found out that if you are on Spiriva 2 years - 5 years your chances of getting prostate cancer is 50%. If you are over 60 (I am 62) the chances are 90%.
467579 tn?1289402969 s during REM. I have moderate emphysema and besides theO2 at night, I only use Spiriva and albuterol inhaler. I do use a scooter for all day outings, but I do get off and walk as much as I can. I also have panic attacks, which seem to hinder my walking ability outside the house or in very unfamiliar places. That's why my Pulmonologist thinks I can walk a straight 30 min. on the treadmill but have so much trouble otherwise. I just tighten up,have a panic attack and that's it!
