Speech therapy for autism

Common Questions and Answers about Speech therapy for autism

speech

Avatar f tn Could be. Could also be a speech delay or disorder. I would ask for a referral to a speech language pathologist.
Avatar f tn Btw, getting a birth to three person can help with speech. He should qualify for speech therapy which does not mean he has autism.
Avatar m tn Official diagnoses come for MDs. The school can suspect but the MD gives the diagnosis. Another name for Autism is Prevasive Development Disorder. They used this term for my son for years. Some States require the diagnosis Autism to get the child State funds. My son was changed to Autism when we moved to Vermont because he could not get help without it. Check your area for a Pediatric Neurologist who specializes in Autism....some have more of an interest than others. Good Luck!
892168 tn?1241488171 My son has mild to moderate autism, he recieves occupational, speech and behavioural intervention, we have never has to use meds with him, the intervention therapies alone have made a huge difference to my son's life. It is at all possible you could get a referal from your son's doctor for intervention therapy?
Avatar n tn 3 words at age 2 is way behind in language and she would qualify for speech therapy at the least. There probably is a reason for her screaming and crying, but she can't communicate that reason to you. My daughter has tantrums really bad. I think if she could communicate why, she wouldn't have some of them. Or at least I could remedy what was wrong in some of the instances.
Avatar m tn My son has an autism and I really do not appreciate a pediatrician who were telling us for 2 years our son has a speech delay because of multy-lingual environment. We lost so much time because of that!!! Just find a good child psycholog, who saw autistic kids before and not just a regualr school/kindergarten psychologist. Even child psychyatrician would work.
Avatar f tn Hi. I agree with the previous poster. Get a referral to have her tested for autism if you're concerned. Usually your speech therapist can raise concerns if she has any regarding your child. If no one suggested to you that she's showing signs of autism, then most likely she doesn't have it HOWEVER, I'd go with your gut feeling and have her tested. What state do you live in?
Avatar f tn suggested occupational therapy then speech therapy. She said that some kids who have speech delays are showing some Autistic traits that will disappear later on. My husband doesn't want him to start any therapies yet because he said he's still young & he wants to give him a time because he believes that it's not Autism. We enrolled him to a toddler class instead so he can interact with other kids because he's our only child & he doesn't have playmates.
Avatar n tn He also answers no to a lot of questions I ask him. Since he was about a year old he has be in speech and developmental therapy because his doctors says he was delayed. I been having him in therapy for at least 3 years and I took him to different doctors and they still haven't found whats the problem with my son. They say he has some characteristics of autism but they say they have to do more test.
Avatar n tn s just a little behind. The doctor promoted speech therapy and said there was nothing to worry about. I also took him to a child neurologist for an exam. The neurologist also did not seem to think anything was wrong. He also mentioned speech therapy and time. However the school district evaluated my son with specialists and said that he was possibly autistic. I don't know what to think. I know my son have some problems and is slow but I'm not comfortable with Autism.
Avatar f tn So much more goes into autism than speech. I can attest that we had speech issues but much more, hence the diagnosis of sensory integration disorder. They generally rule out just a speech delay if you go to a facility that is reputable in these things. Our country does a great job diagnosing autism accurately and early intervention is the absolute best path to helping a child overcome.
Avatar f tn Talk to your doctor about possible therapies for your son.
Avatar m tn Hi thank u for ur comment , yes he gets speech therapy , he doesn't have an Occupational therapy though , his speech has improved lately its just so hard trying to deal with the way he is I bought him a planner and write everything in that we have planned for the day and he loves it
408443 tn?1202069828 I have talked to her doctor about most of this and he said that there is a chance she might have a mild form of autism, but not to worry and wait till she is three. I have just gotten her into a speech therapy program. I looked up autism everywhere I could online, and I didn't find anywhere the type of symptoms that she has. I don't know what to do anymore and I can't take her with me in public anywhere it has gotten so bad.
Avatar f tn My son is nearly 11 years old. He has ADHD with traits of Autism. He has severe speech delay which therapists believed should have been up to scratch by now. I'm just looking for advice or testimonials from other parents who went through the same thing. Did your little ones speech improve? All advice appreciated.
Avatar f tn But i have been told by his regular doctor to test him for possible autism but me myself dont think he has it cause he dont act like he dont know what i'm saying.. I mean he is only saying about 3 or 5 words and i have tested him for serziures but those came back negative.... If you can please let me know what i should do or if you think he has autism.
Avatar n tn THOSE ARE SOME CHARACTERISTICS OF AUTISM BUT U HAVENT MENTIONED ANYOTHER CHARACTERISTICS OF AUTISM SO IT MAY NOT BE AUTISM.. MY SON SHOWS THOSE CHARACTERISTICS AND A FEW MORE OTHER CHARACTERISTICS BUT NOT ALL TO BE DIAGNOSED AS AUTISTIC.. HE WAS DIAGNOSED AS PDD-NOS.. BUT NOT AUTISM.. I THINK YOU SHOULD DEFINITLY GET A REFERAL TO SEE A DEVELOPMENTAL PEDIATRICIAN THEY WILL BE ABLE TO TELL YOU BETTER IF SHE HAS ANY CONDITION OR MAY HAVE NO CONDITION AT ALL...
Avatar n tn He also has good eye contact, had a speech delay but is doing much better with speech therapy, and is very affectionate and bright. I do not believe my son has autism just because of a speech delay or being neat and lining his cars up. I think you'd have to see more symptoms than that. Hope that helps!
Avatar n tn He turned 2 in October. Since then, we have him in speech 3x week (1 hr session). Occupational therapy 1x week, and Applied Behavioral Analysis 15 hours a week. He is on the GFCF diet, takes supplements, vit b12 injections etc.. We have run labs on him as well. Currently, he still runs in circles flapping his hands, climbs constantly on our table and chairs, has to close one door in house, turn on a certain light and does other non-typical behaviors. Do these kids improve?
1346724 tn?1282322904 It depends on the severity of his autism. There is no cure for autism but when therapy is started at an early age, there can be great progress.

Avatar f tn t that, or it could be traits of autism but not enough for a diagnosis. If speech and language is okay then it may be a question of waiting a bit long to see how he develops socially. I think if anything is said to her by anyone it should come from her side of the family. If she has a good relationship with her brother then maybe he could have a word with her. But it may take time for her to see that there is a problem and this usually becomes more evident when they are in social settings eg.
574101 tn?1245537020 I am not a doctor and this is just my opinion. Please also make sure that he is getting speech therapy for his speech delay. Good luck.
Avatar f tn MY SON IS 2 1/2 YEARS OLD, I AM VERY CONCERNED BECAUSE HE STILL IS NOT TALKING HE ONLY SAYS SEVERAL WORDS , WHEN HE WANTS. HE USUALLY JUST SCREAMS FOR WHAT HE WANTS OR POINTS EVERYTHING ELSE SEEMS NORMAL . I AM STARTING TO WORRY THAT THIS COULD BE ASSOCIATED WITH AUTISM OR ASPERGERS, HE TAKING SPEECH THERAPY ONCE A WEEK BUT IT DOES NOT SEEM TO BE ENOUGH HE'S AFFECTIONATE, LOVING DOES NOT HAVE ANY REPETITIVE RITUALS I DON'T SEE ANY OTHER AREAS FOR CONCERN.
Avatar f tn He does not mimic any words nor does he attempt to mimic. He has been receiving speech therapy for 6 months and still has not said a word. There are two older siblings who both started talking at age 1 (they do not talk for him) and a younger sibling who currently says more words than he does. He has recently begun eating paper. He is terified of loud noises (vacuum, trucks, motorcycles, cars, sirens..
