speech

193609 tn?1292180293 He sent a referral to one of the best speech pathologists in the state.....and they called me back and told me my insurance does not cover ANY speech therapy and that he will need to get speech therapy through the local school district. My son is part of Early ON of Michigan and has other therapists through the ISD, and is waiting on an eval from a speech therapist there.
Avatar m tn At the very least he should undergo a Speech/Language evaluation. A speech/language pathologist is the person who should conduct such an evaluation. You can likely requestthis through the school system. An alternative would be to arrange it through a referral from his medical providers.
Avatar f tn He just completed his k5 year and has been in speech for two years. The speech therapist believes he has a language based delay. K5 was very difficult with the phonics approach. After 6 mos of trying to teach him the alphabet and sounds with little success, I bought a leapfrog DVD. Surprisingly, within a few weeks, he knew ALL of his letters and sounds. As far as going to blends, it was an epic fail.
Avatar f tn Hes now 18 months but doesnt say alot of words. He talks up a storm but its not words. My dr wants him to go to speech therapy. Has anyone else experienced this? Im just trying to figure out if hes behind because he was early and hasnt fully caught up yet.
Avatar f tn As well as the above - if this boy is 4.5 years old and is speaking very few words he needs to be seen by a Speech and Language Therapist. By that age you would be expecting sentences. There are many speech disorders and developmental disorders that have difficulties with speech as part of them. It is very possible that his aversion to school and his behaviour is down to simply not understanding language and what is expected of him.
5549102 tn?1376522673 Almost 22 months old he's started saying words I understand him, but he doesn't really say them correctly. Should I worry. When he says drink he pronounces it ju. Instead of bath he says bah with the sign language. He isn't deaf and he passed his hearing test. Should we put him in speech therapy or wait it out until he's older and starting to form sentences? He does pronounce some words very well like cat dog mawmaw pawpaw daddy. Momma if you can get him to say it bye.
Avatar m tn Why are YOU trying to teach him? Get him to the speech therapist now while he's still young!!! Your insurance will cover it. Also go to the regional center, they will provide free speech therapy between 0-3 years (if you don't know how to contact go ask the public school). At 3 years the public school will take over. DO NOT WAIT!!!!!
456039 tn?1302660148 He is now almost five and wayy beyond most of his peers who are attending preschool (he is not) in language, letter recongnition/sounds, etc.
1260255 tn?1288654564 I have not be dx'd, but for 7+ years, I have had problems with language. At first, it was just verbal. On those days where I'd have the brain fog, my voice was soft and I found that I would misuse words or garble syllables/words. This still continues; while it generally lasts for the better part of the day, it usually only lasts for a day and it can be weeks or months between episodes. And yes, I do have the slurring of speech, even on days without brain fog.
Avatar m tn Then there is the mechanical part of communicating our language and that is speech. Problems with speech can include just trying to get the words out, pronouncing the words, the tonal quality of our speech, using emphasis and inflection. Problems with speech can be from weakness or spasticity of the muscles of our mouths, throats and vocal cords. Or it can be with the way our brain tries to direct the speech.
574920 tn?1217392270 Of course you are scared, it is only natural. And it is too bad that the pathology reports cannot be made in a language that we can understand as many times they sound much worse than they really are. When your mom goes to the Dr, I am sure that you will go with her so take with you a list of questions that you want answered. In the meantime, as hard as it is, try not to worry as it will only upset you more. Instead try to remain hopeful and positive.
Avatar n tn You should ask your GP or paediatrician for a referal. Usually it is the Speech and Language Therapist who will assess first. She will assess his receptive and expressive language. His use of pronounds and also his semantic/pagmatic language skills. My son also was not interested in joining in at nursery or school unless it was something he wanted to do and it was on his terms.
635457 tn?1223222111 In addition to the issues/symptoms I have, she has very delayed language and speech and has ritualistic behaviors and routines that are slightly different from OCD. She actually is quite interactive with people but there are differences in how she interacts so she still meets that particular qualification for autism spectrum disorder according to both the public school system and the developmental pediatrician who diagnosed her. She does not understand social cueing.
Avatar f tn It is hard to check hearing at that age because it assumes cooperation which lets face it most three year olds can sit for a hearing test, I would follow up with the pediatrician and the audiologist, the pediatriacian can give you a referal for a speech language assessment and they can help you determine it language is a problem or not.
Avatar f tn Now, at the very least he displays a disorder of speech/language, and this needs to be evaluated. He might also display a learning disability. Whether or not he displays any condition along the Pervasive Developmental Disorder spectrum can only be determined by an evaluation with a pediatric menatl health professional.
Avatar f tn t talk he can say the odd word like mum dad car we have taken him to speech therapy who have said that he is missing off the first letter of the words he is saying and has poor consentration. At home he will not sit down for any length of time to do anything he flicks from one thing to another gets bored really easily and then decided to destroy things especially if we have made it together. if he does play its to take things out of one box and into another.
645800 tn?1466860955 Speech therapists, as they are usually referred to, are actually Speech and Language pathologist. That means they do a whole bunch of awesome stuff that no one knows about! So the speech part of it is actually making the sounds and the language part has a lot more to do with context and communication. In the hospital they work with swallowing problems and determine what kind of diet someone has to be on (no liquids, different stages of thickening etc.).
6965936 tn?1394227011 They used baby sign language to help my daughter she was delayed in speech and would get so frustrated because she couldn't tell us what she wanted. But then we found out she has anxiety that causes selective mutism so they went a different route instead of the sign language.
293420 tn?1243142938 I think it would be great to have a Speech/Language Impaired forum. There are TONS of parents who post about their toddlers/children having speech and language issues, but they have to post on Parenting Toddlers 1-5. It would be great to have all of the posts in one place and be able to track one another's progress with their children and hear stories from other parents about their S/L impaired children. I'm an SLP and I would LOVE to have a forum for this.
543250 tn?1214743177 I forgot to say, yes Semantic/Pragmatic Disorder is typical of being on the spectrum and is one of the Disorders that a good Speech and Language Therapist will tell you that you are looking at a probable diagnosis of autism.
16666184 tn?1450255078 t possibly be there, lack of taste. Language and speech becoming increasingly difficult and needs more pauses and corrections. Significant weight loss 60+ pounds in 4mos. Shutting in. I'm being eaten piece by piece. Mind. Body. Soul. And no one can tell me what it is. I don't know what's worse, knowing something is wrong or knowing you might never know what ate you piece by piece.
Avatar m tn Your son is showing some delay in the area of speech/language, and this may be in the context of generally sound development overall. If the pace of his speech/language does not pick up some momentum over the next several months it would be prudent to arrange an evaluation with a Speech/Language pathologist and/or arrange an Earli Intervention evaluation.
Avatar m tn If not, I would definitely start there, by contacting a speech-language pathologist (the local school district is a great place to start, they provide services as early as age 3). They will definitely want to start with a hearing screening, and then evaluate his speech, language, and social skills. It could simply be a speech/language issue. If his delay is significant, early intervention is vital for him to catch up to peers by the time he needs to start learning to read and write.
Avatar f tn You can relax about any prospect of autism - she does not show signs of any disorder on that spectrum. Her speech/language is delayed and that does invite evaluation, so it is good that you have already set that plan in motion.
Avatar f tn Btw, getting a birth to three person can help with speech. He should qualify for speech therapy which does not mean he has autism.
