So my is was born 6 weeks early. Hes now 18 months but doesnt say alot of words. He talks up a storm but its not words. My dr wants him to go to speech therapy. Has anyone else experienced this? Im just trying to figure out if hes behind because he was early and hasnt fully caught up yet.

Then there is the mechanical part of communicating our language and that is speech. Problems with speech can include just trying to get the words out, pronouncing the words, the tonal quality of our speech, using emphasis and inflection. Problems with speech can be from weakness or spasticity of the muscles of our mouths, throats and vocal cords. Or it can be with the way our brain tries to direct the speech.

Don't worry about autism at the moment, but focus on things to help your son learn to communicate. Not just talk, but communicate. Also, if you have health insurance, see if they will cover a visit to a developmental pediatrician. They diagnose lots of things besides autism, and may be able to tell you if it's just language delay, autism, apraxia, etc.

Yes, repeated infections can have an impact on hearing. Your son's development of speech/language is definitiely delayed, and this warants evaluation by a Speech/Language therapist. But an audiological evaluation is crucial, because it is possible that the delay in speech is secondary to hearing loss.

I was told that toe walking is sometimes a sign of autism, but it can also be a sign of language delays and other language issues that are not autism. Getting therapy for the speech is important. My sister had/has a language processing disorder. She started speech therapy around age 4 and continued after school until about 4th grade. She also got pulled out of class for an hour each day (usually during reading period) to get language/speech/reading help. She was in a regular classroom.

I think it would be great to have a Speech/Language Impaired forum. There are TONS of parents who post about their toddlers/children having speech and language issues, but they have to post on Parenting Toddlers 1-5. I think the only way to find out for sure is to have him assessed by a speech and language therapist. I think that hearing different languages can sometimes make them later to start talking (but having said that my daughter was bi-lingual from 9 months onwards). My son was only saying 2 word combinations at 2+ years and he began repeating words and phrases he heard people say or from the TV. He went on to get a diagnosis of an autistic spectrum disorder.

I forgot to say, yes Semantic/Pragmatic Disorder is typical of being on the spectrum and is one of the Disorders that a good Speech and Language Therapist will tell you that you are looking at a probable diagnosis of autism.

t possibly be there, lack of taste. Language and speech becoming increasingly difficult and needs more pauses and corrections. Significant weight loss 60+ pounds in 4mos. Shutting in. I'm being eaten piece by piece. Mind. Body. Soul. And no one can tell me what it is. I don't know what's worse, knowing something is wrong or knowing you might never know what ate you piece by piece.

Your son is showing some delay in the area of speech/language, and this may be in the context of generally sound development overall. If the pace of his speech/language does not pick up some momentum over the next several months it would be prudent to arrange an evaluation with a Speech/Language pathologist and/or arrange an Earli Intervention evaluation.

It is always better to get a diagnosis through Health rather than through just school, and you need a multi disciplinary team to assess her that has experience of diagnosing autistic spectrum disorders, including aspergers. This should involve a Speech and Language Therapist (to assess language and social interaction and play skills), and an Educational/Clinical Psychologist as well as a Paediatrician.

If not, I would definitely start there, by contacting a speech-language pathologist (the local school district is a great place to start, they provide services as early as age 3). They will definitely want to start with a hearing screening, and then evaluate his speech, language, and social skills. It could simply be a speech/language issue. If his delay is significant, early intervention is vital for him to catch up to peers by the time he needs to start learning to read and write.

Btw, getting a birth to three person can help with speech. He should qualify for speech therapy which does not mean he has autism.

The school district you live in can evaluate him to determine if he qualifies for speech/language therapy. One of my children was evaluated for not talking at age three, received services from out school district as a preschooler and then no longer needed language services by the time he was a kindergartner and then no longer needed speech services by the time he was in 2nd grade. I consider him a success story now that he has successfully graduated from college and is gainfully employed.

My daughter just turned 3 a few weeks ago. While she typically talks in 4-5 word sentences and displays an average vocabulary, I think she is struggling with some comprehension issues. If asked a question she doesn't know the answer to, she will automatically answer yes as opposed to thinking about it or responding with ''I don't know.'' I think she knows she's supposed to have an answer, but doesn't know what to do when she doesn't get what you are saying.

What type of speech/language delay does she have? Has she had a speech/language evaluation -- if so, how delayed is she? I'm not familiar with a body of literature that identifies a causal relationship between gastroesophageal reflux disease or laryngopharyngeal reflux disease specifically with speech delay. I'm interested to hear your answers and I'll keep up with this discussion.
