The school district you live in can evaluate him to determine if he qualifies for speech/language therapy. Your description does invite an evaluation, inregard to both his emotional state and his learning (though many children his age cannot do some of the things you mention). It is his speech/language status that may be of some concern and you can certainly arrange a speech/language evaluation. This can be done by the school system or through your health care providers. In any case, there is no point worrying and wondering what might be occurring. Schedule the evaluations and then you will know.
Hes now 18 months but doesnt say alot of words. He talks up a storm but its not words. My dr wants him to go to speech therapy. Has anyone else experienced this? Im just trying to figure out if hes behind because he was early and hasnt fully caught up yet.

shaz71 -- if you aren't having luck with the psychologist, you could try a developmental pediatrician. Though I think many of them might just be child psychiatrists... they are more apt to diagnose things like autistic spectrum disorders, verbal apraxia, sensory integration disorder, and ADHD and other things.
Then there is the mechanical part of communicating our language and that is speech. Problems with speech can include just trying to get the words out, pronouncing the words, the tonal quality of our speech, using emphasis and inflection. Problems with speech can be from weakness or spasticity of the muscles of our mouths, throats and vocal cords. Or it can be with the way our brain tries to direct the speech.
It is hard to check hearing at that age because it assumes cooperation which lets face it most three year olds can sit for a hearing test, I would follow up with the pediatrician and the audiologist, the pediatriacian can give you a referal for a speech language assessment and they can help you determine it language is a problem or not.

Your son is showing some delay in the area of speech/language, and this may be in the context of generally sound development overall. If the pace of his speech/language does not pick up some momentum over the next several months it would be prudent to arrange an evaluation with a Speech/Language pathologist and/or arrange an Earli Intervention evaluation.
If not, I would definitely start there, by contacting a speech-language pathologist (the local school district is a great place to start, they provide services as early as age 3). They will definitely want to start with a hearing screening, and then evaluate his speech, language, and social skills.
It could simply be a speech/language issue. If his delay is significant, early intervention is vital for him to catch up to peers by the time he needs to start learning to read and write.
Maybe you could try either printing some material from the Internet on normal speech development of children at given ages, or get a book at the library on toddler development and see if milestones are given, and show them. Do you think he doesn't hear, or is it simply that he is not seeming to comprehend language? My daughter just turned 3 a few weeks ago. While she typically talks in 4-5 word sentences and displays an average vocabulary, I think she is struggling with some comprehension issues. If asked a question she doesn't know the answer to, she will automatically answer yes as opposed to thinking about it or responding with ''I don't know.'' I think she knows she's supposed to have an answer, but doesn't know what to do when she doesn't get what you are saying.
I have a speech problem and what didn’t help me was everybody reinforcing that I had the problem. That only willed the stronghold and made me believe it more. She’s still young tell her she can speak and when people speak they don’t think about what they are going to say they just speak. And just let her do it if she stutters or anything just wait for her to finish speaking. She’ll get it down and it would help to find out why she turned out that way. My dad made me stutter.
Say something in Spanish and then in English. Or use flash cards. He'll catch on eventually. That's amazing you taught him 2 languages. That'll definitely come in handy when he's older.
