Common Questions and Answers about Speech development skills

speech

Avatar m tn Looks like he has developed all motor skills. But lagging in speech, plays well, kicks ball, appreciate things he likes. Not searches for things but will appreciate if it is in his way. Can you please suggest about his development? We are much worried about this. Thanks for help!
Avatar f tn The educators from the Child Development Center my son goes to (he's 3 years old), suggested I sign him up for Speech Therapy at the local elementary school because his speech is delayed. Apparently, by law, the school has to enroll him for this problem. I don't know if this law is state wide or national, but you may look into a Speech Therapy program at your local Elementary school as well.
Avatar n tn I don't believe speech therapy is necessary for him, he may just be a quieter type of child who takes in alot from his environment, which isn't such a bad thing. For now, just do as you would normally and keep communicating with him. Encourage him to communicate with others aswell, which i'm sure you already do. I myself was a real quiet kid and wouldn't speak to anyone and was extremely shy, i just wanted to do my own thing and was happy to do so.
Avatar f tn Diagnostic criteria for Pervasive Developmental Disorders (including Autism, Aspergers, and others) include delays in social interaction skills, communication skills, and the presence of stereotyped or restricted behavior and interests. It is difficult to tell the extent of a problem from a description, but what you are describing (diminished eye contact) might fall within a range of typical behavior or might be an indicator of problems with social interaction skills.
Avatar n tn Give him some time to respond to the therapy (at least a few months, I’d imagine) and then perhaps ask for a re-assessment. If his speech development is later assessed to be typical, and he is not showing any other signs of delay, then you can rest easy. If however, he continues to struggle, then you haven’t lost any time in getting him some help and might consider pursuing further services for him. Good luck to you and your family.
Avatar f tn He has been seen by a child development doctor. He has had one session of speech therapy, another in a couple of weeks. He has got an appointment with an occupational therapist next week. I received a copy of the letter addressed to my doctor with a report from when I saw the Child development doctor that said he has mild Hypotonia??? My question is does anyone have a child like mine who has or had similar development delays and what was the outcome.
304970 tn?1331425994 Jaxson will be 21 months on the 16th. He says a few random words, but usually only once or twice, and I cannot get him to repeat them. He doesn't say anything on a regular basis, and I am starting to grow concerned. I know each child develops differently, and I may be overreacting.. His pediatrician says I shouldn't be concerned yet, and that he has impeccable motor skills, and it's possible he focusing on just motor skills at this stage instead of verbal skills?
665125 tn?1273023924 Autism and Asperger’s Disorders are characterized by a similar set of characteristics, most notably deficits in social interaction skills, communication skills, and highly stereotyped behaviors (e.g., repetitive motor or vocal behaviors that don’t seem to serve any function) or interests (topics of conversation or activity are highly restricted or narrow).
Avatar n tn I really dont know if this is a regression in these skills or not. When i first brought him to the school for testing they said his fine/motor skills was his strenghts and that only his speech was the concern. But now after the seizures in Oct I had him retested for his therapy that was recommmended and he is delayed. His speech has always been an issue before the health problems.I just dont know if everything is tied together or just a coincedence.
Avatar m tn Your son is showing some definite unevenness in his development. While his motor development appears to be intact, his cognitive development is not up to par, nor are his social and emotional development. Ask his pediatrician to refer him to a developmental pediatrician for an evaluation.
Avatar n tn At his 2 yr wellness check my ped. referred him to early intervention for speech delay. His expressive speech was found to be 50% delayed. It was also noted that he had a short attention span, high activity level, and was "sensory seeking". At the time I was working full-time and his behavior was a little off. He would jump on things, get incredibly frustrated, have tantrums, and hit me.
Avatar n tn He has been diagnosed with ADHD and has a few other problems like fine motor skills. About a year ago he started repeating his speech. Whatever he says, he repeats to himself under his breath. It's a constant behaviour pattern. It doesn't seem to be a problem but his friends have noticed it and comment on it. Anyone else have a similar experience ? This discussion is related to <a href='http://www.medhelp.org/posts/show/278924'>Whispered Repetitive Speech</a>.
168006 tn?1241012961 He is extremely social, communicative, and loving. His speech skills are far behind what they should be. He sees a speech therapist as well as an occupational therapist twice a week and that has really helped him. He does not take any meds (even if they tried I would not let him take them). My suggestion would be to get your son examined by a child psychologist- try and get a diagnosis. The main issue you may have is that it seems that your son once had skills and has now regressed.
Avatar m tn Follow the above advise. A Speech Therapist is responsible for speech and language development as well as social interaction and play skills. You would be wanting one that has experience of speech delays associated with hearing loss, as well as developmental issues. If you also google to find similar characteristics between those on the autistic spectrum and those with hearing difficulties you will see that there are some similar difficulties.
Avatar n tn He was evaluated by a team about six months ago and found to be intellectually on target, but his fine motor skills (like stacking blocks, or putting together a puzzle) were way behind the norm. (His school is providing a special teacher to work with him on these skills twice a week). But recently his pre-school teachers wondered if, based on the above concerns, he should have neurological testing.
Avatar f tn If your son is repeatedly asking questions and needs you to repeat in order to understand, then he could be having some hearing loss—maybe brought about by the beads stuck in his ears. Hearing loss can delay speech development. Hence this needs to be first identified and then corrected. Please consult an ENT doctor and an audiologist. Take care!
770551 tn?1305578901 Has no problem academic wise except for not paying attention and some under developed small motor skills that effect writing neatly. The doctor and therapist both think he likely has a very high IQ. I have a brother who is autistic and at first the doctor was leaning towards an aspergers diagnosis, but when he saw that my son has a very good imagination he backed off from this theory. He has always been very imaginative and often has vivid violent dreams.
Avatar n tn How are his fine motor skills? Things like tongs or scissors, for example. How are his social skills? He should be just leaving the parallel play stage where he plays along a side a child doing his own thing. Is interaction starting to happen. (don't be alarmed if it is going slowly as having difficulty with speech can hinder socialism for little guys and gals. Hard to play with peers if they don't understand you.
503141 tn?1210297892 Hi How old is your son? Does he have any delayed milestone development? In clinical studies conducted, it has been shoen that white matter myelination is an indicator of functional brain maturation. There is a chance of delayed acquisition of developmental motor and cognitive milestones incase of reduction in brain myelination. Your son is probably having a combination of demyelinating neuropathy.
Avatar m tn they are very smart almost gifted in some areas and still behind in others ie...speech and motor skills. He is not that way at all. He is behind in almost every thing. I took him to the ENT friday and they agreed with the teachers and will be clipping the tongue and taking out the tonsils and adnoids. Still looking into Mitochondrail dysfuction as it goes along with the Autism. Recent studies are showing similarities.
Avatar m tn There is a fairly broad range in what is considered normal development, and it’s not unusual for a child to have brief pauses in language acquisition or the development of social skills and interactions. However, it’s just not possible to tell whether what you are describing is within the range of normal – only an in-person evaluation by a qualified professional can really answer your question.
Avatar n tn m not sure where your from so its probably called something different but there should be programs where you are that helps with children speech development they came to your house they will observe your child and then set up appointments depending on how much and what kind of help she needs they come to your home for the appointments so the child is comfortable there is usually no charge depending on your insurance and they will be able to tell you if she needs testing for autism and where you
