Avatar m tn A Cox proportional hazards regression model revealed that the hazard ratios (HRs) for ITP and AIHA were 1.8 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.4 – 2.3) and 2.8 (95% CI, 1.8 – 4.2), respectively. "Because both ITP and AIHA have been previously associated with interferon alfa use, we were also interested in assessing pharmacy data to account for the effects of HCV treatment," write Dr. Chiao and colleagues.

545538 tn?1295992017 Thank you so much for responding. ITP is a disorder (they don't know what causes it), that reduces platelets in the body, sometimes to a very low amount. What I find confusing is the references to low platelets from individuals on the forum because of the liver pressing on the spleen. I thought maybe this was the reason I was diagnosed with ITP to begin with since ITP is only diagnosed by exclusion.
Avatar n tn It's FDA approved for use in patients who have ITP (IdiophaticTrombocytopenia Purpura) only. The doctors who prescribe it have to register the patient in a program called "Promacta Cares" so that the FDA can keep track of the patients. There is a recent study that showed that many Hep C patient have ITP. Perhaps you can use it to get your doctor to prescribe it for you.
Avatar n tn First off ITP in children is usually an acute situation followed by a virus. This ITP is cureable. Now chronic ITP happens to adults. It is for sure an autoimmune disorder which I am sure you know that the platelets are killed off before maturing thus leading to severe bleeding problems if the platelets are too low. I myslef have it and have very very heavy periods and very painful ones at that. I bruise easily and when I take NSAID like Advil I bruise even easier and platelets drop.
529052 tn?1230874866 I got ITP for 3 years. My platelet count is 40,000 now so I do not take any medication. i got 3 times relapse history after stopped the prednisolone. Avatar m tn They now think he has some rare kind of leukemia and are doing more tests to look for it. I would ask about ITP. Why didn't your dr follow up with you sooner or request more tests?
Avatar n tn I have had ITP and it is in remission. I want to have the hair on my top lip removed by lazer. Will this present risk to my health and starting up the ITP again or the bleeding that goes along with ITP?
Avatar f tn my question is does viral fevers, flu, cold, cough cause low platelet counts in patients with ITP? should i wait till nov for my procedure..what are the other things that could cause low platelets in ITP patients..any info much appreciated ! thankyou.
Avatar n tn Hoping that your husband is seeing a hepatologist so that he can be given the best advice possible on how to move forward given the fact he has cirrhosis and low platelets.
545538 tn?1295992017 I was diagnosed with ITP (platelet disorder) 4 years ago. I was diagnosed with HVC this summer and started txt 1 month ago. I just got 2nd week blood results back and my platetes are 117, which are higher than they have been since I've been tested over 4 years ago. I was always in the 40-50s range except when I had gamma globulin infusions in order to have high enough plateletes for a biopsy. Has anyone else had their plateletes rise during tx?
Avatar n tn My daughter was treated with interferon and ribavirin in 1999 for 48 weeks for Hepatitis C. She is now having problems with ITP and low platelets. She just had blood work and her ALT is 418 and her AST is 144. Could there be any relationship to the current ITP problem and either Hepatitis C (which she has shown no RNA since 1999) or the interferon treatment? Since 6/8 her platelets have only been normal once and range from a low of 9,000 to a high of 159,000. She currently is 41,000.
Avatar m tn i am 15 years old and i have chronic itp so it could be an unknown symptom from itp but i have had itp for almost 9 years now and this is the first time this has happened. i am guessing that the "boogers" are a mixture of puss and blood so it could also be a bladder infection or something. i have also felt the need to urinate more frequently but all in all i urinate the same amount of urine as before, only over more times. can anyone help me?
563571 tn?1232491190 I once read about an early researcher who transfused himself with blood from a patient with ITP and he himself developed ITP. In ITP the body creates antibodies which consume the platelets shortly after they are made and the body is in constant overburdened platelet production. That is the immune type, which I have, anyway. The antibodies in the blood sample must have caused his body to produce these antibodies on it's own.
Avatar f tn Searching, I found you and am excited that there is a group that may actually be able to answer some of my questions. The first thing he wants to do is put me on solumedrol for 5 days, I am not currently in a flair. Any reason I should put myself through that if I am not currently having symptoms?
1172359 tn?1310667693 I am scheduled Monday to do an IV for three days of Solumedrol. Has anyone else done that and if so, what is your opinion. I am alittle nervous about it.
Avatar f tn I know steroids can make you susceptible to infections, but has anyone developed a UTI on solumedrol? I had the unmistakable first inklings of one a bit ago. I rushed out for cranberry juice and a blueberry smoothie (blueberries are supposed to have the same effect as cranberries, and it's a good excuse for a fruit smoothie!!) and I'm hoping I can keep it at bay this way, but I guess I'll know in a few hours. These things tend to come on fast for me.
437079 tn?1222438840 Did this rheumatologist give you any answers as far as how to treat the ITP. You need to ask for copies of your blood work and keep a file for yourself. Please find another doctor, a Hematologist and let them see those blood tests, they will run their own blood work as well. Typically a patient would be given Prednisone to raise their platelet count. Please keep in touch with me and I will help you as best I can.
Avatar m tn Is ITP a complication of HCV or results by non responsive treatment with Interferon alpha 2b?
529052 tn?1230874866 My doc consoled me that everything should be OK, but after i read the blog (as i mentioned before), i only knew that its not an easy task for us (with ITP) to deliver.
280418 tn?1306325910 Plasmapheresis for ITP or Guillian Barre Syndrome ?
Avatar n tn But the confirmation still non reactive. but last 2003 i was diagnose for other sickness that is ITP. Platelet disorder. Thus ITP effect the vdrl reactive or vice versa?
1390055 tn?1365615055 One should rule out other causes of blood abnormalities and causes of thrombocytopenia and then move on to confirm the diagnosis of ITP. Confirmatory test for ITP is bone marrow biopsy only. However, I feel that you should take a second opinion from a hematologist and discuss the various causes of thrombocytopenia before jumping on the conclusion of ITP.
