Crestor is a statin (rosuvastatin calcium) only, Vytorin is a statin (Simvastatin) with Zetia (ezetimibe). Statins work by controlling the production of cholesterol in your liver while Zetia works by preventing cholesterol to be absorbed in your digestive system.
Of the two, Crestor is the stronger of the two. In addition, recent trials have shown that adding Zetia does not improve the performance of Vytorin over Simvastatin alone.
(I was on HCTZ, however, it caused me to have a skin reaction from the sun so my doctor switched to Spironolactone), Simvastatin 10 mg. and Synthroid 50 mcg. I have been taking Simvastatin on and off for years. About two years ago my doctor added ezetimibe to my regimen. It has been lowering my bad cholesterol how ever the first of this month I missed taking them for about a week and for the first time in years I felt less fatigued. I do have Fibromyalgia which is usually the cause of my fatigue, but this is a different type of fatigue. I have not restarted either of the cholesterol meds back because I have felt so much better.
Over the summer my primary care physician finally convinced me to go on simvastatin (I have a combined cholesterol of 240). Since then I have had 3 episodes (a few weeks apart) in which I wake up around 4 AM and have an irregular heart beat. The irregular beats last about 6 hours, and usually subside by noontime. The first time it happened I was worried so I saw my PCP and they did an EKG, put me on a 24 monitor and followed up with a heart ultrasound. All tests came back normal.
Can someone explain what, if any, evidence there for a switch from simvastatin to pravastatin? My husband's doctor said there is new evidence that simvastatin may be detrimental. Unfortunately, my husband did not quiz him further. He already has one stent in a narrow back artery but he has brought his cholesterol down considerably with the statins.

curious if stef2011 or studyforhope or StephenCastlecrag know whether simvastatin by itself can reduce viral load? I've read about the effects in conjunction with NUCS but I'm curious if sim is effective alone.
I have been taking simvastatin for three weeks since having a Tia but have also had a flu like cold for ten days , I am still having aching flu like pains which I would have thought would have passed by now . I don't know if this is a side effect of the drug I'm taking 40mg a day but feel really achy will this pass .

There was just a report on the news last week that statins have been linked top type II diabetes. My wife is on 80mg of Simvastatin while I'm on 20mg.
