Simvastatin rhabdomyolysis

Common Questions and Answers about Simvastatin rhabdomyolysis

vytorin

Avatar f tn Crestor is a statin (rosuvastatin calcium) only, Vytorin is a statin (Simvastatin) with Zetia (ezetimibe). Statins work by controlling the production of cholesterol in your liver while Zetia works by preventing cholesterol to be absorbed in your digestive system. Of the two, Crestor is the stronger of the two. In addition, recent trials have shown that adding Zetia does not improve the performance of Vytorin over Simvastatin alone.
Avatar m tn Stef, many thanks. Another question pls: I'm looking at beginning anti-viral. I have spoken with ROCHE guys in Nigeria and they are talking about what they call PEGASYS(If I get the the spelling, we spoke on phone) Now, what do you know about this anti-viral? Simvastatin doesn't appear available in Nigeria.
Avatar n tn I'm on Simvastatin (40mg) which have some nasty side effects, like cramps and muscle spasms. Can you reommend an alternative?
Avatar f tn The earlier mentioned side effect caused by the group of medications known as the statins, which Vytorin (ezetimibe/simvastatin) is a member of, is called rhabdomyolysis. This condition is breakdown of the muscle and has been associated with the statins as a class as a rare but serious side effect. Rhabdomyolysis caused by statins is reversible once the medication has been discontinued.
10996785 tn?1432812977 Yes, I agree with you from my perspective as far as Rhabdomyolysis goes Lipitor is probably the worst of the bunch. But Vytorin, that I took afterwards, has it beat, at least in my case, because I wound up in the E.R. with kidney problems - the pain was just unbearable. Although it brought my total Cholesterol down from 265 to 160. Although my Cholesterol is high now for the last three years after giving up on Statins altogether after a brief encounter with Crestor.
Avatar f tn There does seem to be a significant difference in the way different statins affect people. Simvastatin is virtually the 'automatic' version which most doctors automatically prescribe to patients as a starter. Atorvastatin is another common one. Your GP will find one which suits you with regards to side effects but you should stop taking them if you experience discomfort from them and then try another brand.
Avatar f tn What will happen if an athlete with Rhabdomyolysis continues to play his sport? What will happen in the long run?
1385464 tn?1293443504 What would cause rhabdomyolysis if I contracted it somehow earlier this year but was NOT in the general categories that usually cause it? (like drug use, being still for a long period of time, etc) My creatine kinase levels STILL-months later-rise and fall. I don't get it. Does anyone have an answer? Not sure if I should categorize this in rare diseases or autoimmune disorders...
Avatar m tn Since you know your CK levels, I assume you've seen a doctor about this? Do you have other symptoms, like muscle tenderness, nausea, etc? In any case, high CK and dark urine are among the signs of rhabdomyolysis (google it), which is not a Good Thing. It's a breakdown of skeletal muscle. It can be caused by too- vigorous exercise, especially when dehydrated, among other things.
Avatar n tn i have been taking tri-cor and simvastatin (40mg) for several years. Over the last 8 months i stopped taking the tri-cor because insurance no longer covered it and I decreased my simvastatin to 20mg. At the same time in increased my fiber significantly (metemucil and high fiber cereal daily) and began taking one 1000mg of fish oil each day. Lost a few pounds as well, I'm 41, 5'10" and 173lbs non-smoker.
Avatar n tn Then stayed off Statins for a year, then the Calcium Score news came. Switched to Crestor developed Rhabdomyolysis after 3 months and Gout - back to the kidney problems. I should add that I am also on HCTZ for my B/P which didn't help as far as the kidneys are concerned. What does it all mean? You're on your own, I guess.
Avatar n tn This intense pain is a symptom of rhabdomyolysis,a rare condition that causes muscle cells to break down. This does not make your muscle tissue "mushy", it just causes cells t breakdown. The most common signs and symptoms of rhabdomyolysis include: * Severe muscle aching throughout the entire body * Muscle weakness * Dark or cola-colored urine These symptoms usually occur in the first 90 days of treatment and happen in less than 1% of those taking Lipitor.
Avatar n tn Although the clinical consequence of the grapefruit juice interaction with most of the listed drugs has not been evaluated, increased plasma concentrations of many of these drugs could result in adverse outcomes. Examples include excessive lowering of blood pressure with the calcium channel blockers, rhabdomyolysis and the potential for renal impairment with the HMG CoA reductase inhibitors, and adverse pulmonary effects of amiodarone.

Avatar f tn Can someone explain what, if any, evidence there for a switch from simvastatin to pravastatin? My husband's doctor said there is new evidence that simvastatin may be detrimental. Unfortunately, my husband did not quiz him further. He already has one stent in a narrow back artery but he has brought his cholesterol down considerably with the statins.
Avatar m tn Advicor (lovastatin/niacin extended-release), Simcor (simvastatin/niacin extended-release), and Vytorin (simvastatin/ezetimibe).
Avatar m tn curious if stef2011 or studyforhope or StephenCastlecrag know whether simvastatin by itself can reduce viral load? I've read about the effects in conjunction with NUCS but I'm curious if sim is effective alone.
Avatar f tn I have been taking simvastatin for three weeks since having a Tia but have also had a flu like cold for ten days , I am still having aching flu like pains which I would have thought would have passed by now . I don't know if this is a side effect of the drug I'm taking 40mg a day but feel really achy will this pass .
Avatar m tn Results What follows is a brief description of the results, limited to statins (simvastatin, atorvastatin, pravastatin) other than cerivastatin, and omitting discussion of fibrates. Rhabdomyolysis Cohort studies indicate a rate of 3.4 (1.6 to 6.5)/100,000 person years (1 in 29,000 per year) from cohort studies, supported by RCTs and notifications. Mortality with rhabdomyolysis is about 10%, giving a statin-specific death rate of about 1 in 300,000 per year.
Avatar f tn Zosta -10) also has the same effect as Storvas 10 mg. I have had cholecystectomy about 5 years back.
Avatar n tn Rhabdomyolysis is a life-threatening condition that results from myositis, a condition which destroys muscle cells causing pain, particularly in the calves and lower back. Avatar f tn I have been taking Simvastatin 20mg for about 2 years, but recently my bad cholesterol has gotten very high to where it is elevated. Now, I admit to not being consistent lately with taking my medication; could this be the cause for my cholesterol to skyrocket?
Avatar m tn The use of simvastatin in the prevention of a malignant liver tumor according to the present invention contemplates the daily administration of an effective amount of simvastatin orally. An effective amount of simvastatin is that amount which provides a decrease in the level of alphafetoprotein to a normal level and which maintains alphafetoprotein at the normal level.
Avatar f tn MB bands which are Cardiac Bands and MM bands which are muscle bands. Weight lifters or people with rhabdomyolysis can knock the MM bands way out of whack. Muscle breakdown will throw the MM band quite high.
