I have been on 20 mg of simvastatin and 3000 mg niaspan now my ck levels have went from 60 to 295 i could hardly walk .will my levels come down if i lower dose. and reverse damage. i have 12 stents .the rest of my blood work is fine.

40 mg is not high, it's the norm. Dosage of Simvastatin ca be as high as 80 mg. I am curious why you are on a statin with a total cholesterol of 160. What s your breakdown by LDL & HDL and do you have any risk factors of CAD currently? Plus, if your script was for 20 mg I would question the pharmacy about receiving 40 mg.

I think they are in the same drug class, I've taken both with the similar results. As I recall, I was changed from lipitor to simvastatin because simvastatin isn't as strong a statin because of some very strong congestive heart meds that impact the liver and kidneys. I have been taking Lipitor (20mg) and my wife has been taking Simvastatin. My Lipitor is about $100 and my wife's Simvastatin is about $6 (same quantity of tables-30).
